Conjunto Chappottín, también conocido como Chappottín y sus Estrellas, es un conjunto de son cubano de La ciudad de la Habana. El conjunto fue fundado entre 1950 y 1951, por el trompetista Félix Chappottín, el pianista Luis Lilí Martínez Griñán, el cantante Miguelito Cuní (Miguel Arcángel Cunill) y otros miembros del conjunto de Arsenio Rodríguez, que se disolvió parcialmente después de su partida a los Estados Unidos.
Historia
Los inicios de la banda se remonta a la década de 1940. Su fundador, Arsenio Rodríguez, fue uno de los líderes de banda más reconocidos del país con grandes influencias en el jazz latino y la música de salsa. Con su Conjunto, desprendido del septeto Boston, fue el primero en agregar instrumentos de caña y metal a una banda latina en ese momento. También fue en este Conjunto de Arsenio que se dieron varios aportes a los “tumbaos montuneros”, a la conexión de elementos sones con los guaguancós (rumbas), así como aportaciones treseras y pianísticas.
Cuando Arsenio Rodríguez salió de Cuba en 1950 para someterse a una intervención oftalmológica en Nueva York, le entregó la dirección musical a su primer trompetista, Félix Chappottín. La banda pasó a llamarse Félix Chappottín y su Conjunto Todos Estrellas. Félix Chappottín dirigió la banda con éxito hasta el año de su muerte en 1983.
Desde 1983 hasta la década de 1990 su hijo Ángel Chappottín Valdés fue el director musical. Desde entonces, el nieto de Félix Chappottín, Jesús Ángel Chappottín Coto, dirigió el Conjunto Chappottín junto con Miguelito Cuni Jr., cantante, percusionista e hijo del excantante principal Miguelito Cuní.
En 2014, el Conjunto Chappottín y Sus Estrellas realizó su primera gira por Estados Unidos.
En 2017, bajo la dirección musical de Víctor Agustín Linén Fernández, se realizó una producción discográfica y documental para el 65.º aniversario del Conjunto. El CD-DVD Vivir vivir se publicó junto con la compañía discográfica EGREM.
Estilo
La banda se dedica al son tradicional con una variedad de elementos estilísticos como el son-montuno, la guajira, la guaracha, el mambo, el danzón, la danzonette, la charanga, el afro-son, el bembé, la rumba cubana (compuesta por yambú, columbia y guaguancó) y el cha cha chá.
Con la incorporación del grupo de instrumentos de viento, Arsenio Rodríguez transformó el formato tradicional de una banda de son. Arsenio Rodríguez fue uno de los músicos cubanos más influyentes del siglo pasado y ejerció una gran influencia en el desarrollo de la salsa y el jazz latino.

Conjunto Chappottín, also known as Chappottín y sus Estrellas, is a Cuban son group from Havana. The group was founded between 1950 and 1951 by trumpeter Félix Chappottín, pianist Luis Lilí Martínez Griñán, singer Miguelito Cuní (Miguel Arcángel Cunill), and other members of Arsenio Rodríguez’s group, which partially dissolved after his departure to the United States.
History
The band’s beginnings date back to the 1940s. Its founder, Arsenio Rodríguez, was one of the most renowned bandleaders in the country, heavily influenced by Latin jazz and salsa music. With his Conjunto, a spin-off from the Boston Septet, he was the first to add reed and brass instruments to a Latin band at the time. It was also in this Conjunto that Arsenio made several contributions to the “tumbaos montuneros” (montunero tombs), the connection of sones elements with guaguancós (rumbas), as well as tresera and piano contributions.
When Arsenio Rodríguez left Cuba in 1950 to undergo eye surgery in New York, he handed over musical direction to his first trumpet player, Félix Chappottín. The band was renamed Félix Chappottín y su Conjunto Todos Estrellas (All Stars Ensemble). Félix Chappottín successfully led the band until his death in 1983.
From 1983 until the 1990s, his son Ángel Chappottín Valdés was the musical director. Since then, Félix Chappottín’s grandson, Jesús Ángel Chappottín Coto, has led Conjunto Chappottín along with Miguelito Cuni Jr., singer, percussionist, and son of former lead singer Miguelito Cuní.
In 2014, Conjunto Chappottín y Sus Estrellas undertook its first tour of the United States.
In 2017, under the musical direction of Víctor Agustín Linén Fernández, a recording and documentary was produced for the Conjunto’s 65th anniversary. The CD-DVD “Vivir vivir” was published in conjunction with the record label EGREM.
Style
The band plays traditional son with a variety of stylistic elements such as son-montuno, guajira, guaracha, mambo, danzón, danzonette, charanga, Afro-son, bembé, Cuban rumba (composed of yambú, columbia, and guaguancó), and cha-cha-chá.
