EVERLAYN BORGES, SINGER, DANCER. (Born in Matanzas) VIDEO.

Her tale begins in a town called Matanzas near the legendary Varadero Beach of Cuba where she was born December 18, 1980. She is the daughter of a popular singer-musician who vanished at sea in a thwarted attempt to find freedom and opportunity in the United States and a doting mother who taught her how to dance. After her father’s sudden disappearance, she was left with a legacy of talent as well as courage.

Chosen at 8 to attend the prestigious School for Performing Arts in Havana, she excelled as a dancer, performing ballet and modern dance. Nine years of schooling groomed her to become a member of a touring Cuban dance troupe, which led to her own escape from Castro’s rule. On tour in Mexico, the precocious young girl took flight. A harrowing journey took her from Juarez into Texas, across the Rio Grande and into a confrontation with police. Nonetheless, she made it to Miami where her dreams began to unfold.

Since her arrival in America’s sexiest city, Miami has had a love affair with Everlayn Borges. Hot doesn’t come close to describing this beautiful Cuban bombshell who could win an Oscar merely for the way she moves her hips. She kept the temperature rising starring as both Maria and Virgen Caridad in the hit musical, “Miami Libre,” a production of Miami’s crown jewel theater, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. Her glorious image swaying to the rhythm of the Grammy nominated Tiempo Libre band was celebrated on billboards and buses all over the city.

She performed for several years with Julio Iglesias, touring internationally as a singer and principal dancer and soloist. She also toured with Bertin Osborne and Eduardo Verastegui, and performed as a dancer in music videos with Julio, Willy Chirino and Michael Sterling. She has appeared on Sabado Gigante and on numerous television specials. Her credits also include being a principal in Showtime’s series, “Going To California” and co-host of the HDNet series, “Get Out.”

Shortly after her arrival in Miami, she got her first taste of being in front of the movie camera in the role of a dancer in Warner Bros.’ The Specialist with Sylvester Stallone. It was as sweet as a mango. Everlayn’s eyes opened to new possibilities and gave her ambition a boost knowing that as an actress she could have many more years on camera than she could on stage as a dancer. As she says, “I have to follow this because it will follow me.”

Everlayn loves performing wherever she can and has appeared on the remix music video of Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight” and “Give You The World” for the Song BMG group, The Dey. She was a principal on the music video for CNote’s popular “Wepa.”

After filming Miami Vice, she began appearing in “Combing Through Life’s Tangles,” which has been produced at such venues as the prestigious Women’s Theatre Project in Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood Playhouse.

She is presently performing in the improv comedy, “Tony and Tina’s Wedding,” creating riotous chaos in the Miami production of the longest running off-Broadway comedy in history, directed by the show’s co-creator Larry Pelligrini. LA “MARAVILLOSA” HABANA. COMENTAN LOS HABANEROS.

La Habana recibirá el martes la placa de Ciudad Maravilla mientras sus habitantes se preguntan por qué. ¿Será por su gente? ¿Será por su arquitectura? ¿Será por las ruinas? Son los comentarios más frecuentes y, por lo general, van acompañados de un chasquido de lengua o una mueca de burla.

La categoría es resultado de un concurso de la fundación suiza New7Wonders, que entrega la placa. La Habana fue elegida en 2014, junto a La Paz (Bolivia), Beirut (Líbano), Doha (Katar), Durban (Sudáfrica), Kuala Lumpur (Malasia) y Vigan (Filipinas).

(Pero dejemos comentar a los habitantes de la ciudad):

“Lo peor que tiene esta ciudad es la cantidad de gente que prefiere morderse la lengua antes que meterse en problemas”, dice Alicia, dolida por la peste y la gritería que no salen en las fotos.

“Las ves muy finas, muy pintadas y tiran, como si fueran camioneros, las latas y los papeles al piso. Si no hay cesto, métete la basura en la cartera como hago yo”, añade refiriéndose a las mujeres habaneras, pero el comportamiento caracteriza a los hombres también. “El culpable es el Gobierno, pero la gente contribuye”.

“¿Normas de urbanidad? ¿Cómo se escribe eso? ¿Se comen?”, pregunta Manuel, que ha vivido siempre en Lawton, pero trabaja en La Habana Vieja. “Supongo que seamos una ciudad maravilla por lo ecléctico de la arquitectura”.

“Lo maravilloso de esta ciudad son las mujeres”, comenta un carpintero de la calle Galiano, aprovechando para piropear a una muchacha que pasa por su lado. Pero rápidamente cambia a la crítica: “La verdad es que si es maravillosa esta ciudad que está toda rota y sucia, no me imagino cómo debe ser una que no es maravillosa”.

Por suerte “la gente no ha perdido aún la necesidad de ayudar a los demás —dice— aunque, ya sabes, es más la necesidad de ayudarte si eres extranjero o estás lindo”.

No obstante, recuerda que hace unos días hubo un fuego en la esquina de Ánimas y todos querían entrar a socorrer a los vecinos.

“En el Canal Habana salen artistas diciendo lo orgullosos que están de la ciudad, y yo los miro con un poco de asco”, dice Yosvany quien se presenta como el poeta de su barrio, aunque está vestido de albañil. “Tienen la oportunidad de criticar y no la usan. Yo también me siento orgulloso de ser habanero, pero coño, a veces tengo que concentrarme para lograrlo”.

“Entre la gente, que se ha vuelto un poco miserable, los baches, los fumigadores, la falta de agua, el calor, los mendigos, los policías, el hambre, tengo la sensación que todo lo bueno se ha ido o está por llegar, ¿quién sabe?”.

Un trabajador de ETECSA se pregunta cómo puede ser maravillosa una ciudad en la cual la basura se acumula en las esquinas diariamente, y en eso coincide con Marta quien ha viajado desde Estados Unidos después de diez años de ausencia.

“Me dijeron que las cosas habían cambiado y tenían razón, cada día a la gente le preocupa menos echar la basura en cualquier lugar y a cualquier hora como si fuera parte del ornato público”.

El trabajador de ETECSA lleva más de una semana trabajando en la misma esquina y ha visto, dice, una regularidad: “La gente tira de los balcones la jaba llena de basura con la esperanza de que caiga lejos de su casa, pero no necesariamente en el contenedor. Después vienen los buzos, que en su mayoría están locos, y rompen las jabas buscando lo mismo comida, botellas, latas que algo para vender. Y, por último, los perros callejeros, que terminan de regar la basura. A veces coinciden todos”,

Daniel, un centro habanero de “pura sepa”, cuenta que hace unos días pasó del piropo al regaño con una muchacha “hermosísima, pero ‘suscita'”.

“Pasó, tiró la lata de refresco en la esquina y, cuando se lo dije con amor, me respondió: ‘Yo la tiro donde quiera si, total, esta ciudad está en candela’. Mira, me indigné”, relató.

Daniel, al igual que otros, consideran que si la ciudad está sucia también se debe a la indolencia de los cubanos que emigran de provincia.

“Vas a sus provincias y todo está más que limpio, nadie se atreve a tirar un papel en el piso, lo hacen aquí porque no les duele. Y eso pasa hasta con los dirigentes, que los traen de allá y que gastan el dinero que debe invertirse en la ciudad en cualquier cosa, menos en limpiarla un poco”.

“Somos una mina de oro y no lo sabemos”, considera Hilda, cuentapropista que ha tenido la oportunidad de asistir a una feria Vintage en una ciudad cercana a Barcelona. “Aquí tenemos la materia prima, todo está viejo, pues aprovechémoslo. Vamos a revivir los 50, no porque no nos quede más remedio, sino porque fue la última etapa de esplendor que ha tenido Cuba. Lo demás ha sido pura decadencia”.

“Todos quieren venir antes de que lleguen los americanos”, dice otra cuentapropista de La Habana Vieja, que vende libros y objetos viejos. “Es cómo venir al parque jurásico del socialismo, y me imagino que lo maravilloso está no solo en los almendrones, sino en descubrir cuál ha sido la fórmula de un grupo humano para sobrevivir después de la hecatombe revolucionaria. Somos la humanidad después de la apocalipsis o de la tercera guerra mundial”.

Se ríe porque cree que con lo que dice se puede hacer una novela de ciencia ficción. “Es en esencia lo que es esta ciudad: una fábula. Un lugar donde aún se llenan fosforeras como si no fueran objetos desechables, o se reparan espejuelos en una mesita hecha de cartón con un cartel escrito a mano. En pleno siglo XXI, tiene que causar curiosidad”.

Luis quiso fundar en algún momento, junto a su primo residente en Islandia, una agencia de turismo de la decadencia. Adriana está segura de que La Habana se está convirtiendo en un parque temático. Samuel piensa que no hay mejor lugar para disfrutar de lo sórdido que unas ruinas y gente “espontánea, dispuesta a darlo todo a cambio de muy poco”. Ailín cree que simplemente estamos de moda, aunque la mayoría prefiera huir en cuanto se le da la oportunidad.

Los habaneros están orgullosos de su ciudad de una manera abstracta. Muy pocos logran apreciar la arquitectura que hay debajo de varias capas de polvo o el trabajo de herrería escondido por el óxido que ha provocado el salitre.

Nancy, traductora e intérprete por cuenta propia, se esfuerza por ver la belleza de la ciudad y resume lo que otros prefieren callar: “Esto es otro logro de la Revolución, que seamos capaces de no sentir nada con respecto a la ciudad o a la patria, que para el caso es lo mismo, porque Cuba es La Habana y, lo demás, áreas verdes”.

“THE WONDERFUL” HAVANA. COMMENT OF THE ‘HABANEROS’.

Havana will receive on Tuesday the city wonder plate as residents wonder why. Could it be its people? Is it architecture? Could it be the ruins? They are the most frequent comments, and usually accompanied by a snap of language or a grimace of mockery.

The category is the result of a competition of New7Wonders Swiss Foundation, which delivers the plate. Havana was elected in 2014, next to La Paz (Bolivia), Beirut (Lebanon), Doha (Qatar), Durban (South Africa), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Vigan (Philippines).

(But let’s hear the comments of the inhabitants of the city):

“The worst thing that has this city is the amount of people who prefer to bite his tongue rather than getting into trouble,” says Alicia, grieved by the plague and the clamor that do not appear in photos.

Rosario Dawson (born May 9, 1979) is an American actress, singer, writer, and activist.

Dawson was born in New York City. Her mother, Isabel Celeste, is a writer and singer who is of Puerto Rican and Cuban ancestry. Isabel was sixteen years old when Rosario was born; she never married Rosario’s biological father, Patrick C. Harris. When Rosario was one year old, her mother married Greg Dawson, a construction worker, who “loved and raised Rosario as his own daughter”. Dawson stated, “He’s always been my dad”.

She made her film debut in 1995 with the controversial teen drama Kids. Dawson dated former Sex and the City star Jason Lewis for two years. They lived together in Los Angeles until they separated in November 2006. She started dating director Danny Boyle in 2012, after having been cast in his 2013 film Trance. The couple split in March 2013.

Rosario Dawson (nacida el 9 de mayo de 1979) es una actriz, cantante, escritor y activista.

Dawson nació en la ciudad de Nueva York. Su madre, Isabel Celeste, es una escritora y cantante que es de Puerto Rico y de ascendencia cubana. Isabel tenía dieciséis años cuando nació Rosario; ella nunca se casó con el padre biológico de Rosario, Patrick C. Harris. Cuando Rosario tenía un año de edad, su madre se casó con Greg Dawson, un trabajador de la construcción, que “amó y se crió Rosario como su propia hija”. Dawson declaró: “Él siempre ha sido mi padre”.

Ella hizo su debut en el cine en 1995 con el polémico drama adolescente niños.
