RELACIONES DE CUBA Y ESTADOS UNIDOS: SENADORES PIDEN “PROMOCION DE LA LIBERTAD” EN VEZ DE CONSECIONES. PHOTOS.

Funcionarios de los Departamentos de Estado, Justicia y Seguridad Nacional se encuentran en La Habana para abordar asuntos judiciales. El Senador Marco Rubio pide que la reunión EE UU-Cuba promueva la libertad “en vez de hacer concesiones al régimen”. Terrorismo, narcotráfico y cibercrimen, temas de la visita de funcionarios de EE UU a Cuba.

Los senadores estadounidenses por el estado de Florida Marco Rubio y Rick Scott, instaron al Gobierno del presidente Joe Biden a que “priorice el futuro del pueblo cubano” y pida además la liberación de todos los presos por “delitos políticos” en el diálogo que sostiene con Cuba sobre asuntos judiciales.

En una carta enviada al secretario de Estado de los Estados Unidos, Antony Blinken; al fiscal general del país, Merrick Garland, y al secretario de Seguridad Nacional, Alejandro Mayorkas, ambos senadores pidieron que el diálogo entre una delegación de alto nivel de Estados Unidos y autoridades cubanas promueva “las libertades políticas y económicas del pueblo cubano en vez de otorgar concesiones al régimen cubano”.

Funcionarios de los Departamentos de Estado, Justicia y Seguridad Nacional de EE UU se encuentran en La Habana esta semana para abordar con las autoridades de ese país asuntos judiciales, indica un comunicado de la oficina de Rubio.

“Experiencias pasadas han demostrado que los diálogos con regímenes autoritarios, especialmente los que no respetan el estado de derecho, afectan negativamente el bienestar y el deseo de vivir en libertad del pueblo cubano”, dice la misiva de Rubio y Scott divulgada este miércoles.

Los senadores instaron a la Administración de Biden a “priorizar” temas como la “extradición de ciudadanos norteamericanos que han huido a Cuba por delitos cometidos en suelo norteamericano, incluyendo a responsables de asesinato a policías y fraude al Medicare”.

Además, piden que durante el diálogo se incluyan temas como “cesar el uso de la migración masiva hacia nuestras costas como un arma política”, y “detener el patrocinio de organizaciones terroristas extranjeras” que operan en Colombia, Venezuela y otras partes de latinoamérica.

De acuerdo con Rubio y Scott, el diálogo bilateral incluye a “funcionarios del Ministerio del Interior de la dictadura, el cual es responsable de graves violaciones de derechos humanos contra el pueblo cubano”.

Los senadores reclamaron asimismo la liberación de presos políticos como el líder de la Unión Patriótica de Cuba (Unpacu), José Daniel Ferrer García, a quien definen como un “defensor de los derechos humanos reconocido internacionalmente”.

“Según informes de organizaciones independientes de la sociedad civil cubana, (Ferrer) ha sido golpeado y torturado frente a su familia”, señalan.

Asimismo, mencionan, entre otros, al periodista encarcelado Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca, al activista Jorge Serrano Alfonso, “quien ha sido golpeado y sigue delicado de salud”, al pastor Lorenzo Rosales Fajardo, condenado a siete años de prisión, al igual que el sacerdote de la religión yoruba Loreto Hernández García y su esposa Donaida Pérez Paseiro, condenados a seis años de cárcel.

“Desafortunadamente, hay demasiados casos de presos políticos para enumerarlos. De no mencionar directamente estos casos, sería un respaldo tácito de la brutalidad del régimen”, escriben los senadores republicanos.

“Cuba sigue siendo el único país del hemisferio occidental que nunca ha celebrado elecciones libres y justas ni ha permitido participación política”, denunciaron.

La delegación estadounidense, formada por funcionarios del Departamento de Justicia y del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional, está en la Habana para participar en el Diálogo entre Estados Unidos y Cuba sobre Aplicación de la Ley.

En dicho foro, abordarán “temas de interés bilateral” y buscarán una “mayor cooperación internacional en materia de cumplimiento de la ley”, aseguró en una rueda de prensa la pasada semana el viceportavoz del Departamento de Estado, Vedant Patel.

Esta visita, la primera de funcionarios estadounidenses en lo que va de año, llega tras meses de tímido acercamiento del Gobierno de Joe Biden a la Isla, sobre todo en temas migratorios.

“Past experiences have shown that dialogues with authoritarian regimes, especially those that do not respect the rule of law, negatively affect the well-being and the desire to live in the freedom of the Cuban people,” says the letter from Rubio and Scott released this Wednesday.

The senators urged the Biden Administration to “prioritize” issues such as the “extradition of US citizens who have fled to Cuba for crimes committed on US soil, including those responsible for murdering police officers and Medicare fraud.”

In addition, they ask that during the dialogue topics such as “ceasing the use of mass migration to our coasts as a political weapon” be included, and “stopping the sponsorship of foreign terrorist organizations” that operate in Colombia, Venezuela and other parts of Latin America.

According to Rubio and Scott, the bilateral dialogue includes “officials from the dictatorship’s Ministry of the Interior, which is responsible for serious human rights violations against the Cuban people.”

The senators also demanded the release of political prisoners such as the leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (Unpacu), José Daniel Ferrer García, whom they define as an “internationally recognized human rights defender.”

“According to reports from independent organizations of Cuban civil society, (Ferrer) has been beaten and tortured in front of his family,” they point out.

They also mention, among others, the imprisoned journalist Lázaro Yuri Valle Roca, the activist Jorge Serrano Alfonso, “who has been beaten and remains in poor health,” the pastor Lorenzo Rosales Fajardo, sentenced to seven years in prison, as well as the priest of the Yoruba religion Loreto Hernández García and his wife Donaida Pérez Paseiro, sentenced to six years in prison.
