Chelo Alonso (born April 10, 1933) is a former Cuban actress who became a star in Italian cinema, and ultimately a 1960s cult film heroine and sex symbol in the U.S. She was well known for playing femme fatales with fiery tempers and sensual dance scenes.

Alonso was born Isabella Garcia in Central Lugareño, Camagüey, Cuba, to a Cuban father and Mexican mother. She initially achieved recognition in Cuba for her dancing ability, becoming a sensation at Cuba’s National Theatre in Havana.

Soon after, she emerged as a new exotic dancing talent at the Folies Bergère in Paris. She was billed as the “new Josephine Baker”, who had also performed and become famous at the Folies. Alonso was billed as the “Cuban H-Bomb”, and mixed Afro-Cuban rhythms from her homeland with “bump and grind”.

Alonso was first noticed internationally in the 1959 film, Nel segno di Roma (Sign of the Gladiator), which starred Anita Ekberg and Georges Marchal. Due to a particularly erotic dance number, her picture and name became more prominent on the movie’s publicity posters than either of the two leads, much to Ekberg’s dismay.

Most of Alonso’s films were adventure movies in the style of Le fatiche di Ercole (Hercules). Hercules starred Steve Reeves and was a wildly popular new genre in film. It paved the way for movies attempting to emulate it. These films required exotic talent, and Alonso’s dark beauty fit the bill; she even starred with Steve Reeves himself in Goliath and the Barbarians (1959) and Morgan il pirata (1960). Goliath and the Barbarians earned Alonso the award of “Italian Cinema’s Female Discovery”.

Following Desert War in 1962, Alonso left film for a time to turn her attention to television. She did not return until 1966’s spaghetti western The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly – her most widely distributed film – ironically playing a small, non-speaking role.

In 1961, Alonso married Aldo Pomilia, a production manager and producer for many of her films. She has one son, Aldino Pomilia.

After the death of her husband, Alonso moved to the city of Siena in Tuscany, Italy. She retired from film and started a cat-breeding business, as well as a four-star hotel.

Chelo Alonso (nacido el 10 de abril 1933) es una ex actriz cubana que se convirtió en una estrella en el cine italiano, y en última instancia, una heroína de cine y sexo símbolo 1960 de culto en los EE.UU. Ella era bien conocido por interpretar a mujeres fatales con temperamento fogoso y escenas de baile sensuales.

Alonso nació Isabella García en el centro de Lugareño, Camagüey, Cuba, de padre cubano y madre mexicana. Al principio ella alcanzó el reconocimiento en Cuba por su capacidad de baile, convirtiéndose en una sensación en el Teatro Nacional de La Habana de Cuba.

Poco después, surgió como un nuevo talento baile exótico en el Folies Bergère de París. Fue considerado como el “nuevo Josephine Baker”, que también había realizado y hecho famoso en el Folies. En 1961, se casó con Alonso Aldo Pomilia, gerente de producción y productor de muchas de sus películas. Ella tiene un hijo, Aldino Pomilia.

Celia Cruz, cantante, salsa star. (Havana)

Celia Cruz was born on October 21, 1924 in Havana, Cuba as Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso. Was of Afro-Cuban descent. She was married to Pedro Knight. She died on July 16, 2003 in Fort Lee, New Jersey, USA.

“La India” calls Celia Cruz her “godmother” because Cruz encouraged and supported her singing career.

In her english speeches on stage, she started saying: “my english is not very good…” with her cuban accent.

Has recorded over 70 albums during her 50 year career.

Left Cuba in 1959, when Fidel Castro came into power. She and her band, La Sonora Matancera, toured Mexico for two years before finally moving to the United States where she has since resided.

Died two days after celebrating her 41st wedding anniversary.

Was the third major Cuban salsa star to die in the same week. The other two were Compay Segundo and Tito Duarte.

Has a star on both Hollywood’s Walk of Fame and Miami’s Walk of Fame.
A section of Miami’s famed Calle Ocho (Southwest 8 Street) was renamed Celia Cruz Way in her honor.

Her public wake in Miami brought over 100,000 fans from all over the world to pay their final respects to her.

Buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York.

Was also known for her shout of “Azúcar!”, which means “Sugar”.

A monument in front of the city hall in Union City, New Jersey was dedicated in honor after her death. A marker with her name lies between the American and Cuban flags. Union City has one of the largest Cuban populations in the United States outside of the Miami area.

She was awarded the American National Medal of the Arts in 1994 by the National Endowment of the Arts in Washington D.C.

She was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording at 6240 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

Carlos Lacámara (born November 11, 1958), sometimes credited as Carlos Lacamara or Carlos LaCamara, is a Cuban-born American actor and playwright who has had a long career on American television, making his first appearance in 1983 on the sitcom Family Ties. Lacamara has mostly played supporting characters and guest star roles, with the exception of his roles as Paco Ortíz on the sitcom Nurses, and as Ray García, the family patriarch on The Brothers García. Carlos also plays “Horace Diaz” in the series Mighty Med.

Lacámara was born in Havana, Cuba and moved to Washington D.C. in 1960 because of the Cuban Revolution. After that, He moved to Puerto Rico, and then to California, where he resides now. He attended UCLA.

In the early 1990s, he played orderly Paco Ortiz on the NBC sitcom Nurses. He also made recurring guest appearances on the crime series Silk Stalkings and Close to Home. The latter series, in which Lacámara plays a medical examiner, is rare in casting the actor in the role of a highly educated professional, although his recent guest roles have shifted from the early trend to cast him as a waiter, valet, or other entry level worker.

In 1995, he played the assassin Retaya in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Improbable Cause”. In 1997, Lacámara also played one of the starring roles in the educational series Connect With English, a fictional drama written for students of English as a Second Language. In 1998, he appeared in an episode of the NBC sitcom Friends in The One with Joey’s Dirty Day.

Although characters from Nurses occasionally appeared on Empty Nest, from which their show had originated, Lacámara’s only appearance on Empty Nest was in an unrelated role in 1995, after Nurses had ended its run.

Lacámara’s role in The Brothers García reunited him with former Nurses co-star Ada Maris. He was also important in the Brother’s Garcia Special (The Mayan Curse).

He has recently made an appearance on Fox’s TV series Lie to Me as inspector Mike Adams.

In 2006, Lacámara’s play Nowhere on the Border won first place of Repertorio Español’s, a theatre company in New York, MetLife Nuestras Voces National Playwriting Competition. The play was produced at Repertorio Español in the fall of 2007. His second play Havana Bourgeois won Reverie Productions’ Next Generations Playwriting Contest, and was produced by Reverie at 59E59 Theaters in New York in 2007, and later played in Los Angeles, California and Coral Gables, FL.

In 2007, he also appeared in the film National Lampoon’s Bag Boy.

Carlos La Camara (nacido el 11 de noviembre 1958), a veces acreditado como Carlos Lacamara o Carlos La Camara, es un actor estadounidense de origen cubano y dramaturgo que ha tenido una larga carrera en la televisión estadounidense, haciendo su primera aparición en 1983 en los lazos familiares sitcom.
