The sympathetic changüi word means “dance”, “jump for joy”. It is a variant of the son, who was born in the eastern region of Guantánamo, where tradition is still maintained.

This rate spread throughout Cuba when the drummer Elio Revé in 1955 founded an orchestra of format charanga which gave life to the contagious rhythm.

“Pastorita has Guararey” was one of the titles put dance to all Cubans. Currently Elito Revé, keeps the changuisera tradition with its cheerful charangon and “The House of el Changüí” at Guantanamo makes joy and history at the traditional pace that refuses to go away.

Talking about the Sucu Sucu.

Sucu – sucu is a rhythm are relative, and had their origin and validity in the Isla de la Juventud. Their basic instruments are guitar, three, bongo, machete and maracas.

The texts of his songs, correspond to the ancient sounds of the eastern region, the Decade of the twenties of the last century.

In 1940 the Cuban musician Eliseo Grenet was who “discovered” for Cuba and the world this cheerful rhythm, to compose several Sucu-sucu, being the so-called “Felipe Blanco” and “Sunday Pantoja”, the most famous. MAJASES: The plural of Maja, is Majaes. The author of this “Sucu-Sucu” was Eliseo Grenet, to more easily to the phonetics of the word (pronounced as well by the people) and that it had more Cadence in the chorus of the song, did not alter it, knowing that it was not grammatically correct:

La simpática palabra changüí significa “baile”, “saltar de alegría”. Es una variante del son, que nació en la región oriental de Guantánamo, donde aún se mantiene la tradición.

Este ritmo se extendió por toda Cuba cuando el timbalero Elio Revé en 1955 fundó una orquesta de formato charanga que dio vida al contagioso ritmo.

“Pastorita tiene Guararey” fue uno de los títulos que puso a bailar a todos los cubanos. Actualmente Elito Revé, mantiene vigente la tradición changüisera con su alegre charangón y “La Casa del Changüí” en Guantánamo pone alegría e historia al tradicional ritmo que se niega a desaparecer.

Hablemos del Sucu Sucu.

El Sucu- sucu es un ritmo pariente del son, y que tuvo su origen y vigencia en la Isla de la Juventud. Sus instrumentos básicos son guitarra, tres, bongó, machete y maracas.

Los textos de sus canciones, se corresponden con los sones antiguos de la región oriental, de la década del veinte del pasado siglo.

En 1940 el músico cubano Eliseo Grenet fue quien “descubrió” para Cuba y para el mundo este alegre ritmo, al componer varios Sucu-sucu, siendo los llamados “Felipe Blanco” y “Domingo Pantoja”, los más famosos. Cuenta la historia que Eliseo Grenet, de visita en Isla de Pinos, al oír el ritmo “Sucu-Sucu”, baile propio de ese lugar, se inspiró para crear esas dos canciones con esa cadencia. Murió el 4 de Diciembre de 1950, relativamente joven, unos 42 años.

MAJASES: El plural de Majá, es Majaes. El autor de dicho “Sucu-Sucu” fue Eliseo Grenet, para dar más facilidad a la fonética de dicha palabra (pronunciada así por el pueblo) y que tuviera más cadencia en el estribillo de la letra de la canción, no la alteró, conociendo que gramaticalmente no estaba correcta:

Andy Garcia knows Hollywood isn’t the same place it was 30 years ago.

When I first arrived to Los Angeles to look for work as an actor in 1978 — first, the only places that were places to work in terms of film or television were about five studios, more or less, the major studios that we all know of. Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, Fox, MGM and PBS. There were no cable outlets. So the opportunities for actors to work in film or television were much more limited.

And I also think they still had not made any kind of real headway or transition in terms of stereotyping actors because of their cultural or ethnic backgrounds. You were limited as an actor. An actor of Hispanic descent or with a Hispanic surname, I would say, [was] pigeonholed into parts that require a character that they think could be Hispanic or can represent a Hispanic — whether it’d be Puerto Rican, Cuban, Mexican, it didn’t matter. But there weren’t that many roles written specifically for characters of that culture or heritage [either]. So combined with the stereotyping of the actor and the lack of roles, there wasn’t a lot of work out there.

The experience for Latino actors in Hollywood has certainly changed drastically, but I’d say it’s taken a long time to see significant change.

Many, many years prior to when I was attempting to start a career, there were different eras in Hollywood films. You know, in the ’30s or ’40s, an actor that had a sort of Hispanic or Latin surname was kind of invoked — the “Latin Lover” was invoked for many years. It was an asset in a way. And then that kind of disappeared, and actors who had Hispanic surnames felt the pressure to change their last names in order not to be stereotyped and create more opportunities for themselves.

I think that the most important thing as an artist is to [have] a very personal connection to who you are. I always felt that in changing the name I would lose sort of the essence of how I could personalize the work, my point of view. And it would be, in a way, betraying that, betraying my inner self. So on a personal note I was just never prepared to go that route. You think about it very strongly because you want to be able to work, but at the end of the day I decided not to go that route. It’s very difficult, I think, when someone asks you who you are and you state your name and it’s not really your name.

Some of the greatest performances have been given by actors who were not of the same cultural background as the characters that they were playing. Even someone like José Ferrer in “Cyrano de Bergerac” or Marlon Brando in “The Godfather” — Marlon Brando is not Italian. Does it matter? Ultimately it’s all about the art form and the actor’s ability to personify his parts.

In the new film “Hemingway & Fuentes” it has been an original concept of him who co-wrote the script with the late author’s niece, Hilary Hemingway. Garcia tells us about it.

Gregorio Fuentes was a character that was with Ernest Hemingway for the last 20 years of his life. He was the captain of his boat the Pilar … My interest in Hemingway and my love of “The Old Man and the Sea” — why he wrote it, how he wrote it and what motivated him to write, but also to spend the time he did in Cuba in the world of Cojimar — that was the initial spark for me. For many years, I always wanted to explore that story of what happened, what was the relationship and what prompted him to write the book, which became probably his most famous and recognized piece of work.

The movie sets out to answer and explore the relationship between Hemingway and Fuentes during their fishing trips off the coast of Cuba. As a Cuban-born actor I can imagine you will be bringing a personal perspective to the set.

BBC Talks to Gregorio Fuentes.

Everybody knows I was born in Cuba and I spent the first five and a half years of my life there, but I’ve been very involved culturally with my heritage. I dedicated really all my life [to] its history and its music because it’s something that I’m very connected to. So, that is the perspective that I bring — my connection to it and I guess my understanding of what that world was like in the ’50s.

My parents grew up in that era and I grew up in an exile [Cuban] community, which was always profoundly nostalgic and loving and filled with memories from that time period. That stimulated my own interest in it and to this day I still continue to have a profound connection to that era, the 1940s and ’50s in Cuba. I left when I was a child, but in my subconscious I sort of lived it as an adult. Through the people who lived [it], sort of through osmosis and hearing their stories and music, you’re able to kind of imagine yourself living in that era and understanding its beauties and its tragedies.

Andy García sabe que Hollywood no es el mismo lugar que hace 30 años.

Cuando llegué por primera vez a Los Ángeles para buscar trabajo como actor en 1978, primero los únicos lugares que podían trabajar en términos de cine o televisión eran unos cinco estudios, más o menos, los grandes estudios que todos conocemos de. Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, Fox, MGM y PBS. No había enchufes de cable. Así que las oportunidades para que los actores trabajen en cine o televisión eran mucho más limitadas.

Y también creo que todavía no habían hecho ningún tipo de avance real o transición en términos de estereotipar actores debido a sus antecedentes culturales o étnicos. Estabas limitado como actor. Un actor de ascendencia hispana o con un apellido hispano, diría yo, estaba encasillado en partes que requieren un personaje que piensan que podría ser hispano o que puede representar a un hispano – ya sea puertorriqueño, cubano, mexicano, No importaba Pero no había muchos papeles escritos específicamente para personajes de esa cultura o herencia. Así que combinado con los estereotipos del actor y la falta de roles, no había mucho trabajo por ahí.

Y luego ese tipo de desaparecidos, y los actores que tenían apellidos hispanos sentían la presión de cambiar sus apellidos para no ser estereotipados y crear más oportunidades para ellos mismos.

Creo que lo más importante como artista es tener una conexión muy personal con quien eres. Siempre sentí que al cambiar el nombre perdería la esencia de cómo podría personalizar el trabajo, mi punto de vista. Y sería, de alguna manera, traicionar eso, traicionando mi ser interior. Así que en una nota personal que nunca estaba preparado para ir por esa ruta. Lo piensas muy fuertemente porque quieres ser capaz de trabajar, pero al final del día decidí no ir por ese camino. Es muy difícil, creo, cuando alguien te pregunta quién eres y dices tu nombre y no es realmente tu nombre.

Algunas de las actuaciones más grandes han sido dadas por los actores que no eran del mismo fondo cultural que los caracteres que estaban jugando. Incluso alguien como José Ferrer en “Cyrano de Bergerac” o Marlon Brando en “El Padrino” – Marlon Brando no es italiano. ¿Importa? En última instancia se trata de la forma de arte y la capacidad del actor para personificar sus partes.

Me dedique realmente toda mi vida [a] su historia y su música porque es algo a lo que estoy muy conectado. Por lo tanto, esa es la perspectiva que traigo – mi conexión a ella y supongo que mi comprensión de cómo era ese mundo en los años 50.

Mis padres crecieron en esa época y crecí en una comunidad de exiliados cubanos, que siempre fue profundamente nostálgica y cariñosa y llena de recuerdos de ese período. Eso estimuló mi propio interés en él y hasta el día de hoy continúo teniendo una conexión profunda con esa época, las décadas de 1940 y 50 en Cuba. Me fui cuando era un niño, pero en mi subconsciente lo viví como un adulto. A través de la gente que lo vivió, por medio de la ósmosis y escuchando sus historias y música, puede imaginarte a ti mismo viviendo en esa época y comprendiendo sus bellezas y sus tragedias.
