Southwest reducirá sus vuelos entre Tampa y La Habana. La aerolínea estadounidense presentó una solicitud al Departamento de Transporte para operar solo un vuelo diario, alegando la baja demanda y la complejidad del mercado.
MADRID/LAHABANA – Southwest Airlines ha solicitado una exención temporal al Departamento de Transporte de EE. UU. (DOT) para reducir a la mitad su frecuencia de vuelos entre Tampa (Florida) y La Habana (Cuba).
De aprobarse, la medida entrará en vigor el 4 de septiembre de 2025 y permanecerá vigente hasta el 4 de marzo de 2026, reduciendo el servicio de dos vuelos diarios (14 semanales) a uno (7 semanales).
En su solicitud, presentada el 30 de julio, la compañía argumentó que la decisión se debe a las fluctuaciones en la demanda de viajes entre ambos países, lo que hace insostenible mantener la frecuencia actual. Southwest declaró que espera restablecer el servicio completo una vez que mejoren las condiciones del mercado. La aerolínea también declaró que ofrecerá a los pasajeros afectados la opción de reubicarse en el vuelo disponible o recibir un reembolso completo.
Esta reducción forma parte de una tendencia más amplia: otras aerolíneas, como United Airlines, suspenderán su ruta Houston-La Habana a partir del 2 de septiembre debido a la volatilidad sostenida de la demanda fuera de temporada. Actualmente, United es la única aerolínea que vuela a Cuba desde fuera de Florida, con un vuelo diario con aviones Boeing 737-800. Mientras tanto, American Airlines y Delta han reducido o solicitado ajustes en sus servicios a Cuba.
Según datos de la Oficina Nacional de Estadística e Información (ONEI), en el primer semestre de 2025, el número de visitantes internacionales a Cuba disminuyó un 25 % en comparación con el mismo período del año anterior, y los viajes desde Estados Unidos disminuyeron casi un 19,1 %.

MADRID/LAHABANA- Southwest Airlines has requested a temporary exemption from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to cut in half its flight frequency between Tampa (Florida) and Havana (Cuba).
If approved, the measure will take effect on September 4, 2025, and remain in place until March 4, 2026, reducing service from two daily flights (14 per week) to one daily flight (7 per week).
In its request, submitted on July 30, the company argued that the decision is due to fluctuations in travel demand between the two countries, which make it unsustainable to maintain the current frequency. Southwest stated that it expects to restore full service once market conditions improve.
The airline also stated that it will offer affected passengers options to be rebooked on the available flight or receive full refunds.
This reduction is part of a broader trend: other airlines, such as United Airlines, will suspend their Houston–Havana route starting September 2, due to the “sustained volatility of off-season demand.” Currently, United is the only airline flying to Cuba from outside Florida, operating a daily flight with Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Meanwhile, American Airlines and Delta have reduced or requested adjustments to their services to Cuba.
According to data from the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI), in the first half of 2025 the number of international visitors to Cuba fell by 25% compared to the same period of the previous year, and travel from the United States decreased by nearly 19.1%.
