Camila Cabello: “Every time I feel afraid, my mother reminds me of the day we crossed the border.”
The popular Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello confessed that she and her family felt “very afraid” when crossing the border between Mexico and the United States, a momentous decision that marked the course of her life and laid the foundations for her successful career in the northern country.

Cuando Camila cruzó la frontera con su madre Sinuhé tenía solamente siete años de edad. Como muchos cubanos vivió en carne propia el miedo de dejar todo atrás para comenzar de cero una vida más digna. “Decidimos (su familia y ella) empezar desde cero, con un par de cientos de dólares, la ropa que llevábamos en la espalda, ninguna familia en los EE.UU y sin idea de lo que iba a suceder al día siguiente”, relató.
La ex integrante de Fifth Harmony primero vivió en su natal Cuba y luego en la Ciudad de México. Cuando su madre decidió mudarse definitivamente a EE.UU, donde los cubanos poseían ciertos beneficios migratorios, solo pudo hacerlo sola, sin el padre de la familia.
“Cada vez que ahora tengo que tomar una decisión y siento miedo, mi madre siempre me recuerda aquel día que cruzamos la frontera. Ese día, ella sabía que, si se paraba a pensar en lo que estábamos haciendo, el miedo le haría retroceder”, agregó.
Sin embargo, un año más tarde el mexicano Alejandro Cabello pudo reunirse al fin con ellas.

La cantante, una de las más cotizadas del momento, se ha convertido en una defensora de los derechos de los inmigrantes en EE.UU y considera que los que cruzan la frotnera “tenemos sueños más grandes que nuestros miedos”.
“Este país fue construido por inmigrantes. Gente que fue lo suficientemente valiente como para comenzar de nuevo. La próxima vez que alguien te diga que quiere construir un ‘muro’ en nuestra frontera, recuerda que detrás de ese muro hay lucha, determinación y hambre”, enfatizó.

THE CUBAN HISTORY, HOLLYWOOD.
By the 1500s the port of Carenas (today Havana) was the meeting point of all the Spanish fleets in the New World, and also a point of view of how much corsair or pirate infested the Caribbean.
On March 20, 1537, the Crown appointed the seventh Spanish governor in Cuba, the Adelantado de la Florida and Commander of the Order of Santiago, Don Hernando de Soto. The King sent the aforementioned Commander to the Island, rather than to govern it, to prepare an expedition to Florida, for the proximity of Cuba to the peninsula discovered by Ponce de León.

And it affirms the myth that this great passion of Isabel by Hernando inspired the sculptor Martín Pinzón to make La Giraldilla, which was sent to be cast in bronze and placed in the highest part of the northwest stronghold of the Royal Force, by Governor Juan de Bitrián and Viamontes between 1630 and 1634.
THE GIRALDILLA A SYMBOL OF LOVE.
The Giraldilla is one of the most representative symbols of the City of Havana and the oldest. Legend of love, history, art, symbol … all enclosed in this statue, made by the Havana sculptor Jerónimo Martín Pinzón in the third decade of the 17th century.
The Giraldilla is a weathervane, with the figure of an aborigine, who holds in his right hand a palm of which only the trunk remains, and on his left, on a pole, the Cruz de Calatrava, order to which the governor belonged . It is 110 centimeters high, on its chest appears a medallion with the author’s name and has the skirt gathered on his right thigh.
For centuries, the weather vane was respected by dozens of tropical hurricanes, until the cyclone of October 20, 1926 ripped it off its pedestal and made it fall to the patio. The figure seen in the Royal Force is a replica, because the original is in the Museum of the City, former Palace of the Captains General, in full view, but protected from the hurricane winds that do not know the history of love that encloses the Giraldilla in itself and the value that this symbol of the city has for the people of Havana.
El puerto de Carenas (Hoy La Habana), era punto de reunión de todas las flotas españolas en el Nuevo Mundo, y también punto de mira de cuanto corsario o pirata infestaban el Caribe.
El 20 de marzo de 1537 la Corona nombraba al séptimo gobernador español en Cuba, el Adelantado de la Florida y Comendador de la Orden de Santiago, don Hernando de Soto. El Rey mandaba al mencionado Comendador a la Isla, más que para gobernarla, a que preparara una expedición a la Florida, por la cercanía de Cuba a la península descubierta por Ponce de León.
Estas razones permitieron que el 12 de mayo de 1539 partiera de La Habana hacia la Florida Hernando de Soto, al frente de una expedición compuesta por nueve buques y 537 caballos escogidos de entre los mejores de Cuba. A partir de ese momento, y por orden expresa del Gobernador, su esposa doña Isabel de Bobadilla, se hacía cargo de la administración del país caribeño.
Y cuenta la leyenda que desde ese día, más que atender al gobierno, doña Isabel se pasaba horas enteras en lo más alto del castillo, en espera de una nave que trajera a su esposo. Soto nunca regresó, murió junto al río Missisipi el 30 de junio de 1540, pero su enamorada esposa continuaba esperándolo.
Y asevera el mito que esta gran pasión de Isabel por Hernando inspiró al escultor Martín Pinzón a realizar La Giraldilla, la cual fue mandada a fundir en bronce y colocada en la parte más alta del baluarte noroeste de la Real Fuerza, por el gobernador Juan de Bitrián y Viamontes entre 1630 y 1634.
LA GIRALDILLA UN SÍMBOLO DE AMOR.
La Giraldilla es uno de los símbolos más representativos de la Ciudad de La Habana y el más antiguo. Leyenda de amor, historia, arte, símbolo… todo encerrado en esta estatuilla, realizada por el escultor habanero Jerónimo Martín Pinzón en la tercera década del siglo XVII.
La Giraldilla es una veleta, con la figura de una aborigen, que sostiene en su mano derecha una palma de la que sólo conserva el tronco, y en su izquierda, en un asta, la Cruz de Calatrava, orden a la que pertenecía el gobernador. Tiene 110 centímetros de alto, en su pecho aparece un medallón con el nombre del autor y tiene la falda recogida sobre su muslo derecho.
Durante siglos, la veleta fue respetada por decenas de huracanes tropicales, hasta que el ciclón del 20 de octubre de 1926 la arrancó de su pedestal y la hizo caer al patio. La figura que se observa en la Real Fuerza es una réplica, pues la original se encuentra en el Museo de la Ciudad, antiguo Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, a la vista de todos, pero protegida de los vientos huracanados que no saben la historia de amor que encierra la Giraldilla en sí misma y el valor que tiene para los habaneros este símbolo de la ciudad.

The list of Cuban actors is not short. Some of the most iconic faces on the big screen are of Cuban origin. Most people know names like Andy Garcia, Eva Mendes, William Levy or even Cameron Diaz; but there are more Cuban actors that have made their way to Hollywood.
… If we speak of comics who turned into blockbuster movie stars, we can’t forget to mention Gotham City’s Mayor Anthony Garcia, from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, played by Nestor Carbonell. Born in New York to Cuban parents, Carbonell has starred in movies and in television. He’s probably most remembered for his roles as Luis Rivera, from Suddenly Susan; and Richard Alpert, from Lost. He has been nominated to the ALMA Awards for both roles, and his role on Suddenly Susan granted him the Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series Award for two consecutive years.
But, in the field of nominations, no one beats Hollywood sweetheart Cameron Diaz. The Californian actress, born to a Cuban father, has been nominated for ALMA, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and a long list of other awards, some of which she has rightfully won. Diaz’s unforgettable face and versatile performance has made her shine in romantic comedies, epic movies, and dramas. The list of her successes includes her debut in The Mask and her starring roles in My Best Friend’s Wedding, There’s Something About Mary, Charlie’s Angels, Being John Malkovich, Any Given Sunday, and Gangs of New York.
Another Hollywood beauty and Cuban actress, Rosario Dawson embodies the archetype of the strong, independent yet sensual woman, coherent with her Cuban, Puerto Rican, and African American descent. Santiago, born in New York to a Cuban father and a Puerto Rican mother, is renowned mostly for her roles of Gina Calabrese in the TV series Miami Vice and Jeannie Cusamano in The Sopranos. Sigler was born in Jericho, New York, to a Jewish-American father and a Cuban mother. In 1997 she was cast as Meadow Soprano, the daughter of the New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano, from the television series.
