SOUTHWEST AIRLINES CANCELS ADDING NEW FLIGHTS TO CUBA.
Southwest has changed its mind about adding Cuba routes, saying it will instead focus on getting its Hawaii service off the ground, the airline said in a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) previously said it would seek to add another route from Tampa to Havana, Cuba, if the American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ: AAL) route between Charlotte and Havana became available for bid. But in a letter to the DOT dated Dec. 20, Southwest said its priorities have shifted.
The Dallas-based carrier is currently working with the Federal Aviation Administration to get the proper certification needed to fly to Hawaii. Southwest had previously said it hoped to offer tickets by the end of 2018, but a few days into the new year, customers still can’t buy Hawaii tickets.
“After further internal analysis, Southwest has decided to focus its expansion efforts on inaugurating service to Hawaii, where we hope to begin operations the first quarter 2019, subject to the receipt of required authorizations from the FAA,” the airline wrote in its letter.
“Given that focus and overall capacity constraints,” it added, “Southwest is unfortunately not in a position to apply for the U.S.-Cuba frequency at this time.”
Only 20 daily routes to Havana are available to domestic carriers. American has five daily flights from Miami and one from Charlotte. American’s Charlotte route isn’t doing well, as its load factor was below 60 percent in 2018, it said in previous regulatory filings.
Instead of giving up the Havana route and having other airlines bid for it like usual, Fort Worth-based American is trying to simply shift the Charlotte route to Miami for a sixth daily flight from the Florida city.
Southwest was among the most vocal opponents of American’s plan, accusing its crosstown rival of putting its own interests ahead of the interests of the public. Southwest currently flies one daily flight from Tampa to Havana and three daily flights from Fort Lauderdale to Havana.
As part of its argument against American, Southwest said other airlines should get the chance to bid for the Havana route, including itself. The government is still deciding what to do with American’s Charlotte route.
