WASHINGTON- El secretario de Defensa, Pete Hegseth, ha anunciado este jueves el comienzo de una operación militar estadounidense para “expulsar a los narcoterroristas” del Hemisferio Occidental.
En un mensaje en X, la antigua Twitter, el jefe del Pentágono explica: “El presidente Trump nos ordenó actuar, y el Departamento de Guerra está cumpliendo. Hoy anuncio la Operación Lanza del Sur”, sin especificar a qué se refiere exactamente.
“Liderada por la Fuerza de Tarea Conjunta Lanza del Sur y el Comando Sur, esta misión defiende nuestra patria, expulsa a los narcoterroristas de nuestro hemisferio y protege a nuestra patria de las drogas que están matando a nuestra gente. El hemisferio occidental es la vecindad de Estados Unidos, y la protegeremos”, ha asegurado, sin dar más detalles.
ARRIBA EL “GERALD FORD”
El anuncio de Hegseth se produce apenas tres días después de la llegada del portaaviones Gerald Ford, el mayor del mundo y el más moderno de la flota estadounidense, a la zona de responsabilidad del Mando Sur de Estados Unidos en América Latina y el Caribe. El buque y su grupo de escolta se suma a la flotilla que ya se encuentra desplegada en aguas internacionales en el límite de las aguas territoriales de Venezuela.
Su llegada había precipitado las conjeturas de que Trump podría ordenar el comienzo de una nueva fase en la campaña militar que Estados Unidos lleva a cabo contra supuestas narcolanchas en el Caribe y en el Pacífico, y que podría incluir ataques directos contra objetivos en territorio de Venezuela.
Este jueves, funcionarios del Pentágono informaron de un nuevo ataque en el Caribe contra una supuesta narcolancha. Se trata del vigésimo desde el inicio de la campaña de operaciones extrajudiciales en septiembre. En ellas, el Ejército estadounidense ha asesinado a 80 civiles.
El miércoles, Hegseth y el jefe del Estado Mayor, Dan Caine, habían encabezado la sesión de inteligencia semanal que recibe el presidente estadounidense cada miércoles. En ella habían expuesto a Trump las diferentes opciones en la campaña militar.
El Gobierno de Estados Unidos insiste en que el objetivo de la campaña es la lucha contra un narcotráfico que mata cada año a decenas de miles de personas en su territorio. Pero numerosos expertos, y el propio presidente de Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, consideran que el verdadero objetivo de la operación es forzar un cambio de régimen en el país caribeño.

WASHINGTON—Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced this Thursday the start of a U.S. military operation to “expel narco-terrorists” from the Western Hemisphere.
In a message on X, formerly Twitter, the head of the Pentagon explained: “President Trump ordered us to act, and the Department of Defense is complying. Today I am announcing Operation Southern Spear,” without specifying exactly what he is referring to.
“Led by Joint Task Force Lanza del Sur and U.S. Southern Command, this mission defends our homeland, expels narco-terrorists from our hemisphere, and protects our homeland from the drugs that are killing our people. The Western Hemisphere is America’s neighborhood, and we will protect it,” he asserted, without providing further details.
THE “GERALD FORD” ARRIVES
Hegseth’s announcement comes just three days after the arrival of the aircraft carrier Gerald Ford, the world’s largest and most modern in the U.S. fleet, in the U.S. Southern Command’s area of responsibility in Latin America and the Caribbean. The ship and its escort group join the flotilla already deployed in international waters on the edge of Venezuela’s territorial waters.
His arrival had fueled speculation that Trump might order the start of a new phase in the US military campaign against suspected drug-trafficking boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific, potentially including direct attacks on targets in Venezuelan territory.
On Thursday, Pentagon officials reported a new attack in the Caribbean against a suspected drug-trafficking boat. This marks the twentieth such attack since the start of the extrajudicial operations campaign in September. In these operations, the US military has killed 80 civilians.
On Wednesday, Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine led the weekly intelligence briefing that the US president receives every Wednesday. During the briefing, they outlined the various options for the military campaign to Trump.
The US government insists that the objective of the campaign is to combat drug trafficking, which kills tens of thousands of people within its borders each year. But numerous experts, and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro himself, believe that the true objective of the operation is to force a regime change in the Caribbean country.
