Nacida como Romana Elena Burgues González el 28 de febrero de 1928 en La Habana, Cuba, fue una venerada y popular cantante cubana de boleros y baladas románticas.
Poseía una de las voces de contralto más hermosas de la música cubana. Conocida como “La Señora Sentimiento”, debutó en 1941 como cantante aficionada en un programa de radio de CMQ y, apenas un año después, su voz y calidad como cantante le allanaron el camino a una carrera profesional donde se mantuvo como una figura destacada hasta su muerte.
CARRERA ARTISTICA
Inició su carrera trabajando en la radio en la década de 1940, pero comenzó a colaborar con grupos más pequeños en la década de 1950. En 1952, la pianista y arreglista Aida Diestro organizó el cuarteto vocal Cuarteto d’Aida. Las integrantes originales fueron Moraima Secada, Omara Portuondo y Haydée Portuondo. Tras ganar popularidad, se lanzó como solista. Para la época de la Revolución Cubana, era una solista de primer nivel, presentándose en elegantes cabarets de La Habana. Su voz parecía fortalecerse con la edad, ya que su técnica, sutil pero sofisticada, impregnaba cada canción con una carga emocional. A lo largo de los años, ha actuado con importantes agrupaciones bailables cubanas, como la Orquesta Aragón, y con cantautores de renombre, como Pablo Milanés. Sin duda, sabía cómo “tomar una canción triste y transformarla en algo mejor”, penetrando el velo emocional de su público con una sinceridad casi palpable. Aunque interpretaba principalmente boleros y son cubanos clásicos, sus versiones eran únicas, con el acompañamiento de músicos y arreglos de primer nivel. Fue madre de Malena Burke y abuela de Lena, también reconocidas cantantes cubanas.
A lo largo de su vida artística, que suma seis décadas (comenzando profesionalmente en 1942), Elena Burke representó un caso singular de intérprete que, gracias a la calidad de su técnica y el sonido de su voz, logró hacer de la canción un arte atemporal, dominando la tradición cancionística, a la vez que experimentaba con nuevas formas líricas de nuestro tiempo, convirtiendo su obra en un fruto de gran riqueza y complejidad humana y musical. Elena dominó un vasto repertorio que abarca al menos las últimas cinco décadas de la canción cubana, desde la cima de la trova tradicional hasta la interpretación de la canción contemporánea.
Ha sido una de las pocas, si no la única, que logró combinar sabiduría y buen gusto con estilos tan variados como los de Ernesto Lecuona, Silvio Rodríguez, Ignacio Piñeiro, Sindo Garay, Mirta Silva y Pablo Milanés. Y eso no es una identificación, sino una prueba contundente de su condición de gran estilista, lo que le permitió abrazar la vida como si fuera el registro de sus discos y lo mucho que hay en el equipo, porque ella encontró en su voz la maravilla de lo nuevo.
Elena ya no está, pero aquí, de pie, como él dijo en su canción, ha estado sintiendo a la Dama, cuyo legado es la fuerza de su voz, plasmada en más de 20 LP y un enorme mapa sentimental que guía las buenas razones.

She possessed one of the most beautiful contralto voices of Cuban music. Dubbed as “La Señora Sentimiento” (lady feeling), she debuted in 1941 as an amateur singer in a CMQ radio program and barely a year after that, her voice and quality as an singer had paved the way of a professional career where she remained as a top figure until her death.
She started her career by working in radio in the 1940s but began to work with smaller groups in the 1950s. In 1952, pianist and arranger Aida Diestro organized the vocal quartet called Cuarteto d’Aida. The original members were , Moraima Secada, Omara Portuondo and Haydée Portuondo. After she got some attention, she went solo.
By the time of the Cuban revolution she was a top solo artist performing in elegant cabarets in Havana. Her voice seemed to become stronger with age, as her subtle yet sophisticated technique graced every song she sang with an emotional weight. Over the years she has performed with top Cuban dance bands such as Orquesta Aragón and with highly acclaimed singer-songwriters, including Pablo Milanés. She certainly could “take a sad song and make it better”, piercing the emotional veil of her audience with an almost palpable sincerity. Though she mostly interpreted classic Cuban boleros and Son, her versions were distinct, supported by top-notch musicians and arrangements. She was the mother of Malena Burke and grandmother of Lena, also well known Cuban singers.
ARTISTIC CAREER
