Santiago es una ciudad mágica, llena de escaleras y lugares donde se mezclan lo real y lo maravilloso, pero ninguna calle la distingue tanto como Enramadas, la vía más populosa de la gran urbe oriental.

Basta detenerse a cualquier hora del día en cualquier punto de Enramadas para respirar la agitada vida de los santiagueros, su ir y venir y su vida cultural.

En los tiempos primeros se llamó la Calle Ancha, hasta que recibió su nombre definitivo a mediados del siglo XVIII, cuando la creyente población comenzó a utilizar el trayecto en las procesiones hacia la iglesia catedral. Los vecinos de entonces construyeron a lo largo de toda la vía enramadas de guano, para mitigar el sofocante sol y adornar la calle. Y Enramadas se quedó.

Fue bautizada así cuando a mediados del siglo XVIII la población religiosa de la localidad inició las procesiones por el céntrico trayecto, rumbo a la iglesia catedral, y los vecinos construyeron enramadas de guano y de otras plantas para adornar y también mitigar el fuerte sol.

Mucha historia encierra cada esquina que mira a Enramadas como, por ejemplo, la intersección con Carnicería, donde estuvo una picota pública para castigar a los esclavos rebeldes durante el sistema colonial de la época.

Con los siglos se convirtió en la principal vía de la urbe, ya que desde la Plaza de Marte hasta Santo Tomás abundaban las unidades de servicios.

Se trata de reanimar la totalidad del paseo para beneficiar la parte baja de la urbe, donde variadas propuestas ampliarán las opciones recreativas para niños, jóvenes y adultos.

CALLE ENRAMADAS MAYOR…

En esa arteria se inspiró décadas atrás el compositor Pedro Gómez y puso la letra en manos del maestro Adalberto Álvarez, entonces al frente del conjunto Son 14.

Una de sus estrofas reza así: “Calle Enramadas mayor/ novia de nuestra ciudad/ populosa arteria principal de mi Santiago. Me gusta ver, al calor el sol ardiente/ la sonrisa de la gente felices al caminar.

Con el paso del tiempo, Enramadas se convertiría en la calle más importante de Santiago de Cuba, pues desde la Plaza de Marte hasta la de Santo Tomás, se agrupaban en sus aceras los principales servicios y comercios de la ciudad.

En 1906, al llegar el alumbrado a Santiago de Cuba, Enramadas vio como por su centro circulaba el primer tranvía eléctrico que rodó en el oriente de la Isla.

Calle de la cultura por excelencia, en su trayecto se construyeron los principales teatros de la villa: el Heredia y el de La Reina (que hoy se llama Oriente), donde se presentaron las mejores compañías de teatro y ópera que recalaban en el país.

Sería Enramadas la calle que inspirara al compositor Pedro Gómez aquello de:

“Calle Enramadas mayor
novia de nuestra ciudad
populosa arteria principal de mi Santiago.
Me gusta ver
al calor el sol ardiente
la sonrisa de la gente
felices al caminar”

Santiago is a magical city, full of stairs and places where the real and the wonderful are mixed, but no street distinguishes it as much as Enramadas, the most populous street in the great eastern city.

It is enough to stop at any time of the day at any point in Enramadas to breathe the hectic life of the people of Santiago, their comings and goings, and their cultural life.

In the early days, it was called the Wide Street, until it received its definitive name in the mid-eighteenth century when the faithful population began to use the route in processions to the cathedral church. MAJOR ENRAMADAS STREET…

Decades ago, composer Pedro Gómez was inspired by that artery and put the lyrics in the hands of maestro Adalberto Álvarez, then head of the Son 14 ensemble.

One of his verses reads as follows: “Calle Enramadas mayor/girlfriend of our city / populous main artery of my Santiago. I like to see, in the heat, the burning sun / the smile of happy people walking.

Over time, Enramadas would become the most important street in Santiago de Cuba, since from Plaza de Marte to Plaza de Santo Tomás, the main services and shops of the city were grouped on its sidewalks.

In 1906, when the lighting arrived in Santiago de Cuba, Enramadas saw how the first electric tram that rolled in the east of the Island circulated through its center.

Street of culture par excellence, along its route the main theaters of the town were built: Heredia and La Reina (now called Oriente), where the best theater and opera companies that came to the country performed.
