OF 1,000 PLACES IN MEXICO FOR MEDICS RESIDENCES IN CUBA, ONLY 184 ARE ACCEPTED. PHOTOS

According to the Ministry of Health, despite the fact that a thousand medical places were offered in Cuba for doctors who passed the National Examination of Medical Residences (ENARM), only 184 had the possibility of traveling, while 816 places were left deserted.

Of the thousand places, 22 residents of pathological anatomy chose to leave; 28 of epidemiology; 68 of Geriatrics, 58 of rehabilitation and eight of psychiatry, according to information provided by the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt) via transparency to La Razón. However, Conacyt did not report any doctor who has requested support in the emergency specialty, in which 100 places were available.

One of the applicants who was left without a place in Mexico despite having passed the exam was Angélica, a candidate for residency in psychiatry. Like her, 70 other colleagues were left in the same situation. “I will take the exam again for the same specialty, hoping that they will remove those places abroad or at least that there is better organization,” she commented to this newspaper.

Psychiatry was the specialty with the least occupied places in Cuba, with eight out of 100 available.

“It is the only specialty I want to do and it is disappointing that passing the exam after so much preparation does not guarantee you a place,” said Angélica. She recalled that despite the fact that some doctors obtained the highest scores in their specialty, they were left without a hospital in Mexico, so re-taking the exam did not guarantee them a place if the same system was repeated.

A group of doctors tried to dialogue with the Ministry of Health, however, they could not guarantee their residence in the country.

A total of 100 places were opened for pathological anatomy, epidemiology, emergencies, and psychiatry respectively. While there were 300 places for geriatrics and rehabilitation medicine for each one, of which 816 were left deserted.

However, within the new places, a thousand were considered in Cuba, not as an option, but as the only alternative for those who were left without a place in a hospital in Mexico. The doctors who obtained a place in the exam accused that they were forced to accept the scholarship in Cuba or give up the position because they could not leave the country, as published by La Razón in its February 5 edition.

Faced with this situation, the Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell responded last February that doctors were “free to decline and if they want a place, a medical specialty in Mexico, next year they will be able to compete again”

However, given the low number of doctors who began the procedures to study on the island, as well as the disagreements of other applicants, the deadline to apply for Conacyt support was extended to June 30.

The Conacyt scholarship consisted of support of $ 9,000 to $ 14,500 per year for the three or four years of each specialty.
