Estos versos donde comienzan nuestros titulares pertenecen al poema titulado ‘A Cuba’, escrito por la puertorriqueña Lola Rodríguez de Tió, quien vivió en La Habana como emigrada revolucionaria en varios momentos, desde fines de 1888 hasta su muerte.

Dolores Rodríguez de Astudillo Ponce de León, o Lola Rodríguez de Tió, nació el 14 de septiembre de 1843. Esta poeta, periodista y revolucionaria destaca entre las más significativas figuras literarias de su país y es una de las personalidades femeninas más importantes del contexto antillano del siglo XIX.

Trabajó arduamente por alcanzar la independencia de su patria del coloniaje español, por lo que tuvo que emigrar varias veces. Primero a Caracas, Venezuela; luego a La Habana, Cuba, y más tarde a Nueva York donde colaboró con los movimientos independentistas de las naciones caribeñas.

Durante su breve estancia entre los emigrados cubanos y puertorriqueños en los Estados Unidos, participó de forma muy activa en los clubs femeninos adscritos al Partido Revolucionario Cubano fundado por José Martí en 1892.

Como se expresa en el artículo número 1 de sus bases “El Partido Revolucionario Cubano se constituye para lograr con los esfuerzos reunidos de todos los hombres de buena voluntad, la independencia absoluta de la Isla de Cuba, y fomentar y auxiliar la de Puerto Rico”.

De Lola Rodriguez es tambien la celebre frase que ha quedado grabado para siempre: “PUERTO RICO Y CUBA, SON DE UN PAJARO LAS DOS ALAS, Y RECIBEN FLORES O BALAS SOBRE EL MISMO CORAZÓN.

Lola Rodríguez de Tió murió ocurrida un 10 de noviembre de 1924. Sus retos mortales se encuentran en el Cementerio de Cristóbal Colón en La Habana, Cuba.

Lola Rodríguez de Tió died on November 10, 1924. Her deadly challenges are at the Cristóbal Colón Cemetery in Havana, Cuba.
