CUBAN ATHLETE ORLANDO ORTEGA GIVES HIS SECOND MEDAL TO SPAIN.
Six days after the second anniversary of his Olympic silver medal in Rio, Orlando Ortega has given a second medal -bronce in the Europeans- to Spain, the country that has given him the opportunity to achieve a better life as an elite athlete .
Born on July 29, 1991 in Artemisa, about 60 kilometers northwest of Havana, Ortega is the grandson of the sprinter Cristina Hechavarría, champion of the 1967 Pan American Games, and of a soccer player from whom he inherited the genes for sport. .
His father Orlando, son of the runner and footballer, was a 400 meter hurdles coach and passed on the passion to the oldest of his four children, who a couple of years later began to win medals in the School Games, the hotbed of Cuban sport .
Orlando was assimilating the tricks to jump hurdles in a fast and elegant way and in 2010 he formed art of the team that went to the Youth World Championships in Moncton, Canada.

A seis días de cumplirse el segundo aniversario de su medalla de plata olímpica en Río, Orlando Ortega ha dado una segunda presea -bronce en los Europeos- a España, el país que le ha dado la oportunidad de alcanzar una vida mejor como atleta de élite.
Nacido el 29 de julio de 1991 en Artemisa, unos 60 kilómetros al noroeste de La Habana, Ortega es nieto de la velocista Cristina Hechavarría, campeona de los Juegos Panamericanos de 1967, y de un jugador de fútbol de quienes heredó los genes para el deporte.
Su padre Orlando, hijo de la corredora y del futbolista, era un entrenador de 400 metros vallas y trasmitió la pasión al mayor de sus cuatro hijos, que un par de años después comenzó a ganar medallas en los Juegos Escolares, el semillero del deporte cubano.
Orlando fue asimilando los trucos para saltar vallas de manera veloz y elegante y en 2010 formó arte del equipo que fue a los Mundiales Juveniles de Moncton, Canadá.

Amigo de los perros, enamorado de las pistas azules como la de Río 2016 y esta de Berlín, y de la música de Marc Anthony, el saltador de obstáculos maduró y a los 21 años se metió en la final de los Juegos Olímpicos de 2012 en la que terminó sexto. Meses después tomó la decisión más polémica de su vida, emigrar a España.
“No entiendo de política, he pasado muchos campamentos en España y aprendí a querer este país, aquí tendré más oportunidades para moverme por Europa y competir contra los mejores y aquí me quedo”, dijo entonces cuando le preguntaron sus razones.
La medalla de Berlín le devuelve al podio internacional y le sitúa ya en la rampa de lanzamiento para los Mundiales de Catar 2019.
