Chelo Alonso (born April 10, 1933) is a former Cuban/Mexican actress who became a star in Italian cinema, and ultimately a 1960s cult film heroine and sex symbol in the U.S. She was well known for playing femmes fatales with fiery tempers and sensual dance scenes.
“Chelo” Alonso was born Isabella Garcia in Central Lugareño, Camagüey, Cuba, to a Cuban father and Mexican mother. She initially achieved recognition in Cuba for her dancing ability, becoming a sensation at Cuba’s National Theatre in Havana.
Soon after, she emerged as a new exotic dancing talent at the Folies Bergère in Paris. She was billed as the “new Josephine Baker”, who had also performed and become famous at the Folies. Alonso was billed as the “Cuban H-Bomb”, and mixed Afro-Cuban rhythms from her homeland with “bump and grind”.
Alonso was first noticed internationally in the 1959 film, Nel segno di Roma (Sheba and the Gladiator), which starred Anita Ekberg and Georges Marchal. Owing to a particularly erotic dance number, her picture and name became more prominent on the movie’s publicity posters than either of the two leads, much to Ekberg’s dismay.
Most of Alonso’s films were adventure movies in the style of Le fatiche di Ercole (Hercules). Hercules starred Steve Reeves and was a wildly popular new genre in film. It paved the way for movies attempting to emulate it. These films required exotic talent, and Alonso’s dark beauty fit the bill; she even starred with Steve Reeves himself in Goliath and the Barbarians (1959) and Morgan il pirata (1960). Goliath and the Barbarians earned Alonso the award of “Italian Cinema’s Female Discovery”.
Following Desert War in 1962, Alonso left film for a time to turn her attention to television. She did not return until 1966’s spaghetti western The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly – her most widely distributed film – ironically playing a small, non-speaking role.
In 1961, Alonso married Aldo Pomilia, a production manager and producer for many of her films. She has one son, Aldino Pomilia.
After the death of her husband in 1986, Alonso moved to the city of Siena in Tuscany, Italy. She retired from film and started a cat-breeding business, as well as a four-star hotel.

El descubrimiento femenino del cine italiano de 1959.
Isabella García, nombre real de Chelo Alonso, nació en Central Lugareño, Camagüey (Cuba). Su primera vocación fue la danza, haciendo presentaciones en varias ciudades de Cuba. Comenzó a trabajar profesionalmente en la Habana a los 17 años y pronto ganó notoriedad en el Teatro Nacional de Cuba por su estilo sensual y exótico.Como Chelo Alonso viajó por todo el Caribe, obteniendo grandes éxito. Le ayudaban mucho sus medidas 91-53-91 y su cadencia al bailar sumada un buen dominio de escena. Poco tiempo después se presentó en Miami y luego, como era de esperarse, viajó a Broadway.
En 1957 es contratada por el Folies-Bergere de París, donde fue llamada “la nueva Josephine Baker”. Sus dotes como bailarina serían muy aprovechadas posteriormente en su carrera cinematográfica.
Los cazadores de talentos inmediatamente se fijaron en ella y poco después era contratada para hacer cine en Italia. Su tipo latino encuadraba muy bien en las películas realistas de la posguerra, pero muy especialmente en un nuevo género: las películas épicas. Su primera película filmada en 1959, fue “El ataque de los moros” que tuvo buen éxito. Luego hizo un pequeño papel en “Mírala pero no la toques” ese mismo año.
Su salto a la fama internacional llegaría ese mismo año con la película “Bajo el signo de Roma”, (1959) junto a Anita Ekberg. Su baile sensual en la película fue utilizado como promoción de la película, incluso más que la participación de la diva sueca. Pocos recuerdan que uno de sus directores fue el mítico Michelangelo Antonioni, que en época de vacas flacas para su cine intelectual, hubo de hacerse cargo de la dirección de esta película que les recomendamos. Los atractivos de esta rareza, –según Christopher Frayling, estudioso del tema– radican en el debut en el género de Anita Ekberg, un año antes de ponerse a las órdenes de Fellini para rodar “La dolce vita”.
Firmó un contrato para filmar “Hércules” con Steve Reeves y a partir de ese momento, la figura sensual de Chelo abrió las puertas a un nuevo género de películas que demandaban figuras exóticas. Completó el año 1959 filmando de nuevo con Steve Reeves la saga de Hércules, titulada “El terror de los bárbaros”. Por esta película, Chelo Alonso fue llamada “El descubrimiento femenino del cine italiano de 1959”. Otros títulos junto a actores de primera talla como “Gastone” (1960) con Vittorio De Sica y Alberto Sordi; “La scimitarra del Saraceno” (1959) con Lex Barker, entre otros. Participó en 19 largometrajes.
Chelo, mito erótico donde los haya, hizo historia en el péplum. Se quedó en Italia a principios de los años 60 y no quiso regresar nunca a Cuba. Tendría sus razones…
Casada con el productor Aldo Pomilia en 1961, abandonó el cine en 1968 para retirarse en Siena, Italia, donde todavía vive.
