Un miembro de la brigada cubana enviada a enfrentar el ébola en África murió este domingo por la mañana en Sierra Leona, informó el Ministerio de Salud Pública (MINSAP).
Se trata de Reinaldo Villafranca Antigua, un enfermero de 43 años. Según la versión oficial, falleció “por paludismo con complicación cerebral”, la misma causa señalada para la muerte, en octubre pasado, de Jorge Juan Guerra Rodríguez.
El reporte, publicado por el diario oficial Granma, precisó que Villafranca Antigua, de Los Palacios, Pinar del Río, estaba en Sierra Leona desde el 2 de octubre de 2014 y trabajaba en el Centro de Tratamiento del Ébola de Kerry Town.
El periódico del Partido Comunista añadió que el enfermero presentó el pasado 17 de enero diarreas que él mismo “asoció a un trastorno alimentario”. Más tarde ese día tuvo fiebre de 38º C, dio positivo a la prueba de Malaria y empezó a recibir tratamiento antipalúdico por vía oral.
Su situación empeoró con un “estado de disociación en tiempo y espacio”, además de la fiebre alta, por lo que fue trasladado al Hospital de la Armada Británica, ubicado en Kerry Town, indicó Granma.
Aseguró que la prueba para el ébola dio negativa, y que Villafranca Antigua recibió “tratamiento antipalúdico de última generación por vía endovenosa”.
No obstante, “presentó síntomas de agravamiento progresivo con toma neurológica y dificultad respiratoria, por lo que fue acoplado a un equipo de ventilación pulmonar bajo el cuidado de especialistas británicos”.
Su cuadro clínico empeoró hasta que se produjo el fallecimiento, señaló Granma.
Villafranca Antigua tenía más de 10 años de experiencia en el sector de la salud. El diario oficial dijo que “de manera voluntaria dio su disposición para integrar el grupo de colaboradores que partieron al África Occidental”.
La información no precisó si el cuerpo del enfermero será sepultado en Sierra Leona o enviado a la Isla.
Las autoridades cubanas han dicho que los médicos que enfermen de ébola no serán repatriados y que los restos de los que mueran por la enfermedad quedarán en el país en el cual prestan colaboración.
Sin embargo, el cadáver de Jorge Juan Guerra Rodríguez fue enterrado en Guinea Conakry, pese a que también murió de malaria —según la versión oficial— y a que era un economista que ni siquiera había entrado en contacto con enfermos de ébola.
La malaria mata a miles de personas en todo el mundo cada año, especialmente a niños en el África subsahariana.
