THE RESIGNATION IN CUBA OF RELIGIOUS MAGAZINE EDITORS “CREATES CONTROVERSY.”
“Laycal Space” (Espacio Laycal) magazine is a project of Father Felix Varela Cultural Center of the Archdiocese of Havana, and is presented as a “response to the demands of evangelization of the whole Church, through a methodology of meeting, listening and understanding.”
The magazine has been involved in several controversies, many of them for items and positions against internal opposition.
Interestingly, his biggest confrontation with the regime, the proposed direct, free and competitive elections, May 2013 – immediately went into the background.
In the most recent visit to Spain of the exeditors Roberto Veiga and Lenier Gonzalez asked that countries do not set themselves up as “judges” on the situation of human rights in Cuba.
The exeditors of “Lay Space”, confirmed Wednesday that resigned their posts in the journal of the Archdiocese of Havana and were not removed, as initially interpreted by an email sent to employees of the publication and leaked to the press.
“The main reason that led us to apply our resignation as editors has been related to the controversy generated in some sectors of the Christian community, the socio-political profile of the publication,” Veiga and Gonzalez said in a note published by the IPS agency.
That .. confirmed the version of the new editor of the magazine, Gustavo Andújar Robles, who on Wednesday criticized the exeditores to use the phrase “we have been released from our obligations” in the email they sent to reviewers of the journal.
“It was not ‘freed from office’, in the sense in which the term is used in Cuba, but renounced them, in the sense that term is used everywhere,” Andujar said in a written statement.
Noted (Andújar) that Veiga and Gonzalez turned “the euphemism commonly used in Cuban media to refer to the dismissal of any officer.”
The exeditores recognized that “the phrase lent itself to misunderstanding” and resulted in “a very unfortunate incident.” They said that they had agreed with the direction of the magazine to give a “low profile” the waiver “and, initially, not talk to the press.”
“The term ‘released from our obligations’ meant, in effect, to approval of our waiver by the cardinal,” explained Veiga and Gonzalez said.
As for the “controversy” within the Catholic Church for the magazine, and Veiga Gonzalez stated that “has caused tensions that have projected onto the figure of the Cardinal Archbishop” and on them.
CAUSES OF THE RENOUNCING.
“We felt so appropriate-and still think-that it was not morally right to continue driving a publication that caused divisions within the ecclesial community itself, where the positions of those who think that the Church should not interfere ‘in politics’ and that they believe they should not open their spaces to all actors of Cuban civil society, “they argued.
“We have to understand the impossibility of maintaining the editorial runway Space Lay magazine as it has been until today,” they added.
“We make public our gratitude to Cardinal Jaime Ortega to support our management, as far as it was possible,” said Veiga and Gonzalez.
Moreover, they described as “aggressive and disproportionate” the tone of the statement Gustavo Andújar.
Andujar said in his note that “nobody is indispensable”, so Lay Space “will continue, with a new production team.”
“It will have supporters and detractors, as now, but not necessarily have equal criticism and praise or content coming from the same groups that now,” Andujar said ..
Breaking publishers occurs just before the retirement of Cardinal Jaime Ortega. The Archbishop of Havana, according to various sources, could end his long tenure in August after a celebration for his 50 years of priesthood. If you reach October, turning three years of papal extension.
The exeditores said they had resigned on two other occasions to Cardinal Jaime Ortega, archbishop of Havana.
“The two previous requests were never approved by the cardinal. Then, out of consideration for him to continue to exercise our functions accept”, clarified the exeditores.
