El lanzador cubano Liván Hernández, ahora coach y embajador de los Nacionales de Washington, señaló que se retirará oficialmente esta semana como jugador de las Grandes Ligas, reporta la AFP.

La última vez que Hernández lanzó en Grandes Ligas fue en 2012 con los Bravos de Atlanta y los Cerveceros de Milwaukee.

El cubano volvió después a la organización de los Nacionales, en enero de este año, y en esta primavera ha dado orientaciones a los lanzadores del conjunto capitalino.

“Este es el momento indicado para hacerlo”, señaló Hernández. “Tenía muchas cosas en la mente e iba a esperar el momento correcto”, agregó.

Hernández, de 38 de años, ha sido quizás el lanzador más popular en la historia de los Nacionales.

Durante su tiempo con los Expos de Montreal (ahora los Nacionales), fue un gran trabajador y era considerado el líder del cuerpo monticular.

El cubano también tiene la distinción de haber tirado el primer lanzamiento en la historia de los Nacionales y representó al equipo en su primer año en Washington en el 2005.

Liván también vistió uniformes con los Gigantes de San Francisco, los Diamondbacks de Arizona y los entonces Marlins de la Florida, con quienes ganó un anillo de Serie Mundial en 1997, cuando vencieron a los Indios de Cleveland en siete juegos.

Liván fue elegido Jugador Más Valioso en ese Clásico de Otoño y en el campeonato de la Liga Nacional de ese año, cuando derrotaron a los Bravos de Atlanta.

En 17 años como grandesligas, fue elegido al Juego de Estrellas dos veces y terminó su carrera con balance de 178-177 con promedio de 4,44 en carreras limpias.

En nueve series de playoffs con los Marlins, Gigantes y Diamondbacks, el cubano dejó balance de 7-3 con 3,97 de efectividad.

The Cuban pitcher Livan Hernandez , now coach and ambassador for the Washington Nationals , said this week will officially retire as a player in the majors , reports AFP.

The last time Hernandez pitched in the majors was in 2012 with the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers .

The Cuban then returned to the Nationals organization in January of this year, and this spring has given guidance to the whole capital pitchers .

“This is the right time to do it ,” Hernandez said. “I had a lot on my mind and was going to wait for the right moment ,” he added .

Hernandez, 38 , has perhaps been the most popular pitcher in the history of the Nationals.

During his time with the Montreal Expos (now the National ) , was a hard worker and was considered the leader of the pitching staff .

Cuban also has the distinction of having thrown the first pitch in the history of the Nationals and represented the team in his first year in Washington in 2005.

Livan also wore uniforms with the San Francisco Giants , Arizona Diamondbacks and then Florida Marlins , with whom he won a World Series ring in 1997 , when they beat the Cleveland Indians in seven games.

Livan was chosen MVP at the Fall Classic and in the championship of the National League that year , when they defeated the Atlanta Braves.
