El secretario de Estado de EEUU, John Kerry, afirmó este miércoles que tiene “un par de ideas” para lograr la liberación del estadounidense Alan Gross, encarcelado en Cuba desde 2009.
Durante una audiencia en el Comité de Gastos de la Cámara de Representantes, Kerry respondió a una pregunta del congresista cubanoamericano Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL) sobre cómo lograr la liberación de Gross.

“He tenido repetidas reuniones, particularmente en los últimos meses, sobre el asunto de Alan Gross. De hecho, me reuní con su familia hace un par de semanas, y no voy a entrar en detalles, pero estamos muy centrados en un par de posibilidades para llevar a cabo un intento (de liberación)”, aseguró Kerry.
Gross, de 64 años, fue arrestado y encarcelado el 3 de diciembre de 2009 y en 2011 fue condenado a 15 años de cárcel por lo que el Gobierno cubano describió como “acciones contra la integridad territorial del Estado”.
El Gobierno estadounidense niega ese cargo y mantiene que Gross trataba simplemente de proporcionar acceso “sin censura” a internet para “una pequeña comunidad religiosa” judía en la isla.
“Realmente queremos recuperarlo, porque creemos que no se encuentra bien (de salud), y está encarcelado injustamente. Es una prioridad principal para nosotros, y la Casa Blanca ha estado muy implicada buscando iniciativas para lograrlo”, indicó Kerry.
El titular de Exteriores reconoció que la Administración de Barack Obama “se ha topado con un muro” en varios de sus intentos de lograr la liberación de Gross, pero “sigue intentándolo”.
“Y tengo un par de ideas que espero que puedan funcionar. Veremos qué ocurre”, reiteró.
La condena a Gross se ha convertido en el principal obstáculo para el avance de la política de apertura a Cuba iniciada por el presidente Obama a su llegada al poder, y hoy Díaz-Balart instó al Gobierno a cambiarla para imponer “consecuencias específicas” por el caso del contratista y el “aumento de la represión” a disidentes.
Kerry respondió que “la Administración de Obama está preparada para intentar tener una política diferente, pero no ha visto ningún indicador que justifique ese cambio en este momento”.
“Hay algunas cosas que hacemos que creemos que son útiles, como las remesas, las visitas familiares y los otros tipos de intercambios familiares. Pero por ahora, tiene usted razón” —señaló Kerry a Díaz Balart— en que hay graves problemas sobre cómo se trata a la gente allí y la naturaleza del régimen”.

U.S. Secretary of State , John Kerry , said Wednesday that he has ” some ideas ” to secure the release of American Alan Gross, imprisoned in Cuba since 2009.
During a hearing in the Appropriations Committee of the House of Representatives , Kerry responded to a question from the Cuban-American Congressman Mario Diaz- Balart (R -FL ) on how to achieve the release of Gross.

“I have had repeated meetings , particularly in recent months , on the issue of Alan Gross. Indeed, I met his family a couple of weeks ago, and I will not go into details, but we are very focused on a couple of possibilities to carry out an attempt ( release ) , “said Kerry .
Gross, 64, was arrested and jailed on December 3, 2009 and in 2011 was sentenced to 15 years in prison for what the Cuban government described as ” actions against the territorial integrity of the State ” .
The U.S. government denies the charge and maintains that Gross was merely providing access ” uncensored ” internet for ” a small religious community ” Jewish on the island.
“We really want it back, because we believe it is not good ( health ) and is unjustly imprisoned . ‘s A top priority for us, and the White House has been very involved looking initiatives to achieve it,” Kerry said.
The foreign minister admitted that the Obama administration “has hit a wall ” in several of his attempts to secure the release of Gross, but ” keep trying ” .
” And I have a couple of ideas that I hope they can work. ‘ll See what happens ,” he reiterated .
The Gross sentence has become the main obstacle to the advancement of a Cuba policy of openness initiated by President Obama coming to power , and Diaz- Balart today urged the Government to change it to impose ” specific consequences ” for the if the contractor and the ” increased repression ” of dissidents .
Kerry responded that ” the Obama Administration is prepared to try to have a different policy, but has not seen any indication that would justify such a change at this time .”
“There are some things we do that we think are useful , such as remittances , family visits and other types of family exchanges. But for now , you are right ,” Kerry told Diaz – Balart – in that there are serious problems about how treats people there and the nature of the regime . ”
