Placetas (Spanish pronunciation: [plaˈsetas]) is a city in the Villa Clara Province in the center of Cuba; before the change in the country’s government in 1959, the province was called Las Villas. The town is also known as La Villa de Los Laureles because of its wild laurel trees. Placetas is also a Municipio, one of 13 subdivisions of the Villa Clara Province. Cuba’s geographical center, Guaracabulla, is located in this municipality.

HISTORY
Placetas was founded on September 9, 1861, mainly due to the sugar production industry. Nowadays, the main produce of the area is tobacco. The main contribution to its foundation came from Jose Martinez-Fortun y Erles, a Spanish Marques and former colonel in the Spanish Army. The town is located on the Carretera Central road, which cuts through the town. The town’s position on this road has allowed it to serve as a stop for many travelers. Placetas has grown considerably over the years, being declared a town in 1881 and a city in 1925. In 1879 it was established as its own municipality. Placetas is also known for the great carnivals which take place in July and Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Until the 1977 administrative reform, Placetas was divided into the following barrios: Cabecera (Placetas town proper), Guaracabulla (or Guaracabuya), Hernando, Nazareno, San Andres, Sitio Potrero, and Tibisial. Annual celebrations displaying the local pride of each barrio used to take place until the 1990s when the government stopped them.

GEOGRAPHY
Placetas lies southwest of its province, next to the borders with the one of Sancti Spíritus. Nearest towns include Zulueta (to the north), Remedios (to the northeast), Cabaiguán and Fomento (to the east), and Santa Clara and Camajuaní (to the west). The springs of Zaza River, which runs from the outskirts of Placets to the sea, are located near the town. The river Zaza is currently an environmental preservation area.

The municipality borders with Manicaragua, Santa Clara, Camajuaní, Remedios, Cabaiguán and Fomento. Its territory includes the villages of Báez, Benito Juárez, Carbó Serviá, Falcón, Falero, Guaracabulla, Hermanos Ameijeiras, Manzanares, Máximo, Miller, Nazareno, Oliver and Suazo.

DEMOGRAPHICS
In 2004, the municipality of Placetas had a population of 71,837. With a total area of 601 km2 (232 sq mi),[2] it has a population density of 119.5/km2 (310/sq mi). The city proper has a population of 42,000.

The area is primarily a sugar-producing region, with three “centrales” sugar producing factories. Placetas also has major railroad industries that operate from its area. Many Placetenos have emigrated to other countries and there are around 2300 people from Placetas residing in the United States, most of them in Miami. This contributes to the high amount of comunitarios that travel to Placetas every month from the United States. Nowadays the town also houses many aluminum factories and is known around Cuba as the capital of aluminum because of the export business. One of the main streets in Placetas is the Primera del Oeste street, because is the corner where Cuba’s central road and the Parque Casallas meet and because it houses the popular Rumbos, one of the many touristic places recently opened. This street also houses the underground commerce and business of the town. It is referred to by Placeteños as La Calle 8 de Placetas, in reference to 8th St. in Miami.

ARCHITECTURE
The main Catholic church in the town is called San Atanasio de Placetas, after the town’s patron saint. As of 1996, it had one library, the main post office, three middle-high schools (13 de Marzo, Rodolfo Leon Perlacia, and Julio Antonio Mella), one police station, and many recreational areas. Most of the downtown’s structures were built before the 1959 government of Fidel Castro, and little of the town has been renovated since.

HISTORIA

Founded in 1995 in Santiago de Cuba, Septeto Santiaguero is a group considered among the main exponents of Cuban traditional music.

EL SEPTETO SANTIAGUERO, UN DESTACADO GRUPO MUSICAL CUBANO “DE OCHO” MUSICOS.

Fundada en 1995 en Santiago de Cuba el Septeto Santiaguero es una agrupación considerada entre los principales exponentes de la música tradicional cubana.

Con Fernando Dewar a las riendas del Septeto Santiaguero se aparcaron las llamadas y respuestas en el montuno entre el cantante y el público, y se adoptó la disciplina del septeto tradicional – guitarra, Tres (Instrumento musical), bongó, claves, maracas, contrabajo y trompeta- sin más licencia que la tumbadora, a mayor gloria de Arsenio Rodríguez. Era por tanto un septeto de ocho, pero conservó el apelativo de septeto porque la música que hacía y cómo la hacía era la propia del septeto.

Este proceso de renovación tuvo lugar entre el 1993 y el 1995. Eran años muy duros para la música en Santiago de Cuba y en todo el país. En el 1994 surge la Vieja Trova Santiaguera. En febrero graba su primer disco en La Habana, y en el verano en España recibe un éxito rotundo que alcanzará en toda Europa.

Que ganó en 2015 el Grammy Latino en el apartado de Música Tradicional con el CD “No quiero llanto: “Tributo a Los Compadres”.

Entre los reconocimientos más relevantes con que cuenta la agrupación destaca el Premio Cubadisco que obtuvieron en 2011 así como la nominación en la duodécima edición anual al Grammy Latino en 2013 con el disco ‘Oye mi son santiaguero’ en la categoría Mejor Álbum Tropical Tradicional.

Isabella Castillo Díaz was born in Havana, Cuba on December 23, 1994, is a singer and actress born in Havana, Cuba. Her best-known role is that of Graciela “Grachi” Alonso, the main character of the Nickelodeon Latin America’s series ‘Grachi’, which has released several songs.

Isabella Castillo daughter of the singer Delia Díaz de Villegas and the percussionist José Castillo. She has an elder sister, Giselle, a pianist and music teacher. Isabella Castillo sings “Lo que Siento”.

In 2007 she gained the Magnet Outstanding Performance recognition at the South Miami Middle Community School and she was invited to honor the neo-elected president of Israel Shimon Peres. Isabella Castillo Díaz nació en La Habana, Cuba el 23 de diciembre de 1994, es una cantante y actriz nacida en La Habana, Cuba. Su papel más conocido es el de Graciela “Grachi” Alonso, la protagonista de la serie ‘Grachi’ de Nickelodeon Latinoamérica, que ha lanzado varias canciones.

Isabella Castillo hija de la cantante Delia Díaz de Villegas y el percusionista José Castillo. Tiene una hermana mayor, Giselle, pianista y profesora de música. En 1997, a la edad de tres años, emigró a Belice, mudándose a Miami, Florida, unos meses después. A los cinco años debutó como cantante en uno de los conciertos de su madre: a partir de ese momento tomó lecciones de baile, canto y actuación, estudiando música en Musical Procenter y ganando cuatro veces el Gran Premio en la Feria de la Juventud de la Universidad Internacional de Florida. El 26 de marzo de 2005, ganó el primer premio como Most Promising en la División de Canto Infantil del USA World Showcase y el 15 de julio subió al escenario del Manuel Artime Theatre de Miami en el musical ‘Fantasia en Disney’; también participó en el concurso Best New Talent en Los Ángeles y en el concierto ofrecido por la Embajada de Israel para los cubanos residentes en Estados Unidos.

Isabella Castillo en “Soñar No Cuesta Nada”

En 2007 obtuvo el reconocimiento Magnet Outstanding Performance en South Miami Middle Community School y fue invitada a honrar al presidente neo-electo de Israel Shimon Peres. Nuevamente en 2007, persuadida por el productor Óscar Gómez, inició un curso intensivo de actuación con la actriz cubana Lili Rentería, preparándose para la audición en Madrid del musical ‘El Diario de Ana Frank – Un canto a la vida’; mudándose a España con su familia, después de tres rondas de audiciones le dieron el papel principal. El musical, que se inauguró el 28 de febrero de 2008, le valió el Premio Gran Vía a la Mejor Revelación en un Musical.

De regreso a los Estados Unidos en 2009, inició su carrera como actriz en la telenovela producida por Telemundo ‘El Fantasma de Elena’, en la que interpretó a la joven de diecisiete años Andrea Girón; al final de la serie, consiguió el papel de Grachi, el personaje principal de la telenovela homónima de Nickelodeon Latinoamérica. Durante la emisión, en febrero de 2012, de la segunda de tres temporadas, Castillo participó en el musical ‘Grachi: El show en Vivo’. Gracias a Grachi, entre 2011 y 2012 Castillo ganó el premio de Actriz Favorita en los Kids ‘Choice Awards México, Kids’ Choice Awards Argentina y Meus Prêmios Nick, convirtiéndose también en el primero en ganar el premio de Artista Latino Favorito en los Kids ‘Choice Awards 2012.

Isabella Castillo en “No me Ames”

El 21 de febrero de 2013 firmó con Warner Music Latina para su primer álbum, Soñar no Cuesta Nada, lanzado el 23 de abril. En marzo ganó el premio a Artista Latina Favorita en los Kids ‘Choice Awards por segunda vez. En septiembre de 2014, el cantante Patricio Arellano publicó su tercer disco, con un dueto con Castillo titulado “Que duermas Conmigo”, y el 21 de octubre fue anunciada en el elenco de la nueva telenovela Tierra de Reyes con el doble papel de Alma Gallardo y Verónica Saldívar. Luego protagonizó otra telenovela, ¿Quién es quién ?; por su parte, actuó en Tacones enanos, obra de teatro española de Araceli Álvarez de Sotomayor, del 9 de diciembre de 2015 al 10 de enero de 2016.
