“Estas nominaciones son probablemente las más emotivas, porque son para una canción que escribimos con la intención no solo de inspirar a nuestros compatriotas cubanos, sino también de dar a conocer la situación en nuestro país”, dijo en declaraciones a Efe Yotuel Romero. “El hecho de que se haya convertido en una pieza tan importante de las protestas sin precedentes por la libertad que comenzaron en julio en Cuba ha ayudado a que esta canción cobre una nueva vida, y estamos muy agradecidos”, agregó Yotuel, ganador previamente de un Grammy y de dos Grammy Latinos.

La opositora Rosa María Payá dijo a la agencia española que “Patria y Vida es la canción del año, y es fantástico que la industria de la música lo reconozca”, no solo “por el valor de la música, la poesía y la interpretación de seis maravillosos músicos cubanos, sino porque trasciende el mundo del entretenimiento para hablarle a las conciencias del pueblo cubano y de los ciudadanos el mundo”.
Según Payá, la canción “hace lo que el arte está llamado a ser: conciencia de la sociedad y por tanto también un factor de cambio”.
“Sus intérpretes en la Isla, como Maykel Osorbo, hoy en prisión, están pagando las consecuencias, y la solidaridad entre sus colegas es fundamental”, subrayó.
“He tenido la bendición de estar nominada 11 veces anteriormente pero esta es la más especial porque Maykel Osorbo, que es también compositor y uno de los raperos de la canción, está preso en Cuba simplemente por haberla compuesto”, indicó Beatriz Luengo, esposa de Yotuel Romero y co-compositora de la canción.
El Funky, por su parte, se declaró “feliz con esta gran noticia” en un mensaje en Twitter en el que mencionó a Osorbo, al artista Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara y al periodista Esteban Rodríguez, también encarcelados en Cuba.

En la gala de entrega de los premios, que se celebrará el próximo 18 de noviembre en Las Vegas, EE UU, Patria y Vida compite, en la categoría de mejor canción, con A tu lado (Paula Arenas), A veces (Diamante Eléctrico), Agua (Tainy y J Balvin), Canción bonita (Carlos Vives y Ricky Martin), Dios así lo quiso (Ricardo Montaner y Juan Luis Guerra) y Hawái (Maluma).
