Menos de una semana después de la reapertura de los servicios gastronómicos en La Habana, el gobierno capitalino anunció este miércoles la “flexibilización” de otras medidas que había impuesto desde hace meses por la pandemia, entre ellas permitir la estancia en las áreas del Malecón habanero y las playas del Este en la Habana.

Aunque se hace oficial este miércoles el uso público del “banco más largo”, como llaman muchos a ese emblemático muro capitalino, “ya desde el viernes pasado, cuando se abrieron los bares y se permitieron algunos servicios al aire libre, la gente estaba llegando y sentándose”, cuenta a 14ymedio Julio Aleaga, analista y vecino de la avenida Paseo en El Vedado, a pocos metros del Malecón.

“Lo de hoy es la confirmación oficial pero el atrevimiento ciudadano ya se había acercado al Malecón”, insiste Aleaga. “Había gente en las mañanas corriendo por la acera más pegada al mar, lo que estaba prohibido hasta la semana pasada”.

El vecino del Malecón también aseguró que después de las 10:30 de la noche, hora en que comienza el toque de queda, “pasa un camión de la Policía y al que esté sentado ahí se lo llevan”.

PROHIBICION TRAJO QUEJAS DE LOS HABITANTES CAPITALINOS

La prohibición de sentarse en el emblemático muro o transitar siquiera por la acera más próxima al mar, fue una medida que azuzó el encono de los habaneros, acostumbrados a pasar largas horas recibiendo la brisa marina, encontrando amigos o escuchando algo de música en el lugar.

A partir de hoy, debido al “descenso sostenido de los casos confirmados y el avance de la vacunación”, también “se podrán realizar ejercicios físicos en la vía pública y en los gimnasios, incluyendo los locales que tienen ventilación artificial”, indicó el gobernador de la ciudad, Reinaldo García Zapata.

Además, se anunció la apertura de playas y piscinas, estas últimas al 50% de su capacidad, pero el gobierno advirtió de que no se podrá asegurar “un servicio gastronómico adecuado” en estos sitios y los bañistas deben garantizar su alimentación.

Tampoco se reforzará el transporte público para que los bañistas acudan a esas áreas por “la situación económica” que vive el país, justificaron. En este caso, deberán viajar “de manera ordenada y cumpliendo con las regulaciones epidemiológicas” como el uso de la mascarilla mientras no estén dentro del agua.

La Habana, una ciudad costera con una antigua tradición de baños en su litoral, atravesó el cálido verano con sus playas y su Malecón cerrados a los que querían darse un chapuzón, incluso si solo querían acercarse a las aguas para refrescarse en medio de la intensa canícula.

El cierre de las Playas del Este a los bañistas, las más populares de la capital, fueron un duro golpe a todo el entramado económico de poblados como Santa María, Boca Ciega y Guanabo, en los que buena parte de las familias viven de rentar habitaciones, servir comida o gestionar otros divertimentos para los que llegan buscando una tranquila jornada frente al mar.

Estas estrictas restricciones han sido muy cuestionadas no solo por quienes señalan el devastador efecto económico que tiene en el entramado privado de la zona sino que también recuerdan que los lugares abiertos y ventilados son los de menor riesgo para contagiarse por covid-19. Los críticos cuestionan que se mantengan abiertas las tiendas estatales a puertas cerradas y con larguísimas colas, mientras se ha penalizado con multas a las familias que han querido disfrutar de la brisa marina.

THE GREAT BEER OF CUBA “HATUEY”, AN HISTORICAL SYMBOL OF THE CUBAN INDUSTRY. PHOTOS

Hatuey Beer, the best-known Cuban brand is the historical symbol of the Cuban beer industry. Baptized with the name of the Taino chief who in the 16th century led the resistance of the Cuban natives against the colonial and conquering yoke.

In 1918 the Santiago Brewing Company plant was founded by Mr. Eduardo Chibás Guerra (father of the leader of the Orthodox Party, Eduardo Chibás). A short time later, under the direction of Enrique Schueg and Chassin, the facilities were acquired by the Ron Bacardí SA Company. The factory located in the Santiago neighborhood of San Pedrito was acquired with the sole purpose of building a new Bacardi distillery and serving a greater consumer demand from Americans who traveled in large numbers from the United States to Cuba. The new distillery was inaugurated on February 4, 1922.

As of 1926, the Cia. Ron Bacardi decided to convert the facilities for the manufacture of a beer for national consumption that was later Hatuey and that over time acquired the motto of ‘La Gran Cerveza de Cuba’ and that would be inaugurated the following year in a business link of Bacardi SA and the brewers of the Santiago Brewing Company.

While still president of Bacardi, Mr. Enrique Schueg hired the North American George J. Friedrich who, together with German brewers, was credited with being responsible for the high quality of the product. In order to guarantee his first place in addition to the quality in nature of Hatuey beer, Enrique decided to offer free ice blocks with the purchase of Hatuey. The faster beer grew in popularity and became the only cold beer that is readily available on the island.

In its first 21 years, production and sales at the San Pedrito brewery in Santiago de Cuba increased five times.

In order to cater to Cuba’s growing thirst for Hatuey Beer, a new brewing facility, the Modelo brewery, was created in 1947. A few miles from Havana in a place called “El Cotorro”. Being true to its name, it was indeed a model brewery.

When Ernest Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Company threw a party for him at the Cerveceria Modelo. Hemingway was a frequent visitor to the brewery since he was close to his house in Havana “La Vigia”.

The building had to meet the growing Cuban demand for Hatuey beer. This brewery was a state-of-the-art facility, a model brewery. In the first nineteen months of Modelo’s production, 3.5 million liters of beer were produced.

Sales continued to increase and on November 14, 1953, the Manacas beer factory, Las Villas, was built. In 1954 a profit of 1.6 million dollars.

In 1959, 10 million cases were produced and Hatuey came to control 50% of the Cuban beer market.

AND THE END OF HATUEY CAME IN CUBA

On October 14, 1960, after 34 years of uninterrupted growth, during this period Hatuey beer sales of 12,000,000 cases per year represented 1,500,000 per year. It was when the Ron BACARDI SA Company and Hatuey Cervecerías were confiscated by the regime that had taken power in Cuba and Hatuey lost the market and the rest is history.

Beginning in 2011, the Bacardi family once again began brewing beers in the United States to be marketed under the Hatuey label.

LA GRAN CERVEZA DE CUBA “HATUEY”, UN SIMBOLO HISTORICO DE LA INDUSTRIA CERVECERA CUBANA.PHOTOS

La Cerveza Hatuey, la más conocida marca de cerveza cubana es el símbolo histórico de la industria cervecera cubana. Bautizada con el con el nombre del cacique taíno que en el siglo XVI encabezó la resistencia de los nativos cubanos contra el yugo colonial y conquistador.

En 1918 la planta Santiago Brewing Company fue fundada por el Sr. Eduardo Chibás Guerra (padre del líder del Partido Ortodoxo, Eduardo Chibás). Corto tiempo despues, bajo la dirección de Enrique Schueg y Chassin, las instalaciones fueron adquiridas por la Compañía Ron Bacardí SA. La fábrica situada en el barrio santiaguero de San Pedrito, fue adquirida con el único propósito de construir una nueva destilería Bacardí y dar servicio a una mayor demanda de consumo de los estadounidenses que viajaban en un gran número de Estados Unidos a Cuba. La nueva destilería fue inaugurada el 4 de febrero de 1922.

A partir de 1926 la Cia. Ron Bacardi decidió convertír las instalaciones para la fabricacion de una cerveza para el consumo nacional que fué la que más tarde fuera Hatuey y que con el tiempo adquirió el lema de ‘La Gran Cerveza de Cuba’ y que seria inaugurada al año siguiente en un enlaze empresarial de la Bacardi S.A. y los cerveceros de la Santiago Brewing Company.

Siendo todavia presidente de la Bacardi el Sr. Enrique Schueg contrato al norteamericano George J. Friedrich que junto a cerveceros alemanes se acreditaron como los responsables de la gran calidad del producto. A fin de garantizar su primer lugar ademas de la calidad en la naturaleza de la cerveza Hatuey, Enrique decidió ofrecer bloques de hielo gratis con la compra de Hatuey. La cerveza más rápidamente creció en popularidad y se convirtió en la única cerveza fría que está fácilmente disponible en la isla.

En sus primeros 21 años, la producción y las ventas en la fábrica de cerveza San Pedrito en Santiago de Cuba aumentó cinco veces.

A fin de atender la creciente sed de Cuba por la Cerveza Hatuey, una nueva instalacion cervecera, la cerveceria Modelo, fue creada en 1947. A pocas millas de la Havana en un sitio denominado “El Cotorro”. Siendo fiel a su nombre, era de hecho un modelo de cervecería.

Cuando le fue concedido el Premio Nobel de Literatura a Ernest Hemingway la Compañía le arrojó una fiesta en la Cerveceria Modelo. Hemingway era frecuente de la cervecería, ya que se encontraba próximo a su casa en La Habana “La Vigia”.

El edificio debía atender la creciente demanda cubana de cerveza Hatuey. Esta cervecería era una instalación de última generación, una cervecería modelo. En los primeros diecinueve meses de producción de Modelo, se produjeron 3,5 millones de litros de cerveza.

Las ventas siguieron aumentando y el 14 de noviembre de 1953 fue construida la fábrica de cerveza Manacas, Las Villas. En 1954 un beneficio 1,6 millones de dólares.

En 1959, 10 millones de cajas se produjeron y Hatuey llegando a controlar el 50% del mercado cervecero de Cuba.

Y LLEGÓ EL FINAL DE HATUEY EN CUBA

El 14 de octubre de 1960 después de 34 años de crecimiento ininterrumpido, durante este período las ventas de cerveza Hatuey de 12.000.000 de cajas al año representaron 1.500.000 por año. Fue cuando la Compañía Ron BACARDI SA y Hatuey Cervecerías fueron confiscados por el régimen que habia tomado el poder en Cuba y Hatuey perdió el mercado y el resto es historia.

A partir de 2011, la familia Bacardi volvió a empezar a elaborar cervezas en Estados Unidos para comercializarlas con la etiqueta Hatuey.
