CUBAN DOCTORS CAUGHT IN A FOREIGN WAR.
Several Cuban health professionals are stuck in Yemen unable to escape the country at war, which Havana evacuated its diplomatic staff.
DIARIO DE CUBA could talk to the cardiologist Juan Carlos Nogueira Batista, who is currently in Sana’a by the surgeon Gerardo Céspedes Arias and the wife of this, the nurse Maite Castellanos Batista.
The three have tried to leave the country by land and sea at least seven times without success.
“Every day is bombing after bombing. We are very close to what appears to be a store of ammunition and weapons, and we feel threatened (…) has already received several bomb hits,” said Nogueira Batista, who is the wife Island and two children aged seven and 12 years old. “It’s a real danger,” he added.
The specialist and his colleagues were working in a private hospital in Taiz, in central Yemen. They arrived in the country independently, without regard to agreements with other governments Havana said Nogueira Batista.
“We decided to close the contract (with the hospital in Taiz) because we felt threatened by the situation that was there,” said the doctor.
He noted that attempted to cross the border with Saudi Arabia about five times “but it was impossible”; also twice they tried to escape by sea, on the west coast. “We intend to reach Djibouti and then take a flight back to Cuba, but we could not.”
On one occasion, they wanted to get on a boat in which he was traveling UNICEF staff, but “the captain said he could not approach anyone but” the UN agency.
“After we signed up for an organization called IOM (International Organization for Migration) in order to take a flight, but neither got,” he added.
According to Nogueira Batista, he and his colleagues have spent more than ten days refugees in a residential building belonging to a military hospital in Sanaa, in which there are five Cubans working.\
“As the situation got so tense, they were transferred to the hospital and are living there and we are living at home,” he said. “It is a group of buildings surrounded by a wall of about two and a half meters high and protected by soldiers,” he added.
He noted that spend most of their time without power, affecting the water supply, the possibility of loading -vitales help- phones to manage and preserve the food.
“Fortunately we can still buy food in the shops, but are already quite depleted supplies,” he said.
Nogueira Batista estimated that about 15 Cubans remain in Yemen. We also offer three and five working in the military hospital, four remain in Taiz and Dhamar have two others.
According to the doctor, the private hospital where they worked had withdrawn their passports.
“I guess it’s because, to make the contract, once you have paid the passage from Cuba to Yemen, considered the right to pick the passport,” said Nogueira Batista.
“In principle, it is with the supposed aim of legalizing your stay in the country” and make the necessary diplomatic procedures. “I guess that is also to ensure that you can not go” of Yemen, he said.
After the evacuation of the embassy “were a little devoid of diplomatic representation and someone to protect us,” said the specialist.
He said that, before leaving, the Cuban embassy staff told them they had given their names to the Russian embassy and the Red Crescent. “But no one has contacted us to discuss evacuation.”
He said his goal “was to work, make some money and return to Cuba” with something to let him live with “better quality”.
Friends of medical residents outside Cuba have opened an online petition requesting that the IOM use “their resources to return them home safely.”
Professionals “have been abandoned to their fate,” say the drivers and remember to ask IOM “are valuable lives.”
The Cuban government “closed its embassy and evacuated all its staff, leaving the doctors behind, without guarantee or warn time to leave the area of conflict,” he criticized.

DOCTORES CUBANOS ATRAPADOS EN UNA GUERRA EXTRANJERA.
Varios profesionales cubanos de la salud están atrapados en Yemen sin poder escapar del país en guerra, del cual La Habana evacuó a su personal diplomático.
DIARIO DE CUBA pudo hablar con el cardiólogo Juan Carlos Nogueira Batista, quien se encuentra en Saná junto al cirujano Gerardo Céspedes Árias y la esposa de este, la enfermera Maite Batista Castellanos.
Los tres han intentado salir del país por tierra y mar al menos siete veces, sin éxito.
“Todos los días es bombardeo tras bombardeo. Estamos muy cerca de lo que parece ser un almacén de municiones y armas, y nos sentimos amenazados (…) ya ha recibido varios impactos de bomba”, dijo Nogueira Batista, quien tiene en la Isla esposa y dos hijos de siete y 12 años de edad. “Es un verdadero peligro”, añadió.
El especialista y sus compañeros trabajaban en un hospital privado de Taiz, en el centro de Yemen. Llegaron al país de forma independiente, sin relación con los convenios de La Habana con otros gobiernos, aseguró Nogueira Batista.
“Decidimos cerrar el contrato (con el hospital de Taiz) porque nos sentíamos amenazados por la situación que había allí”, dijo el médico.
Señaló que intentaron cruzar la frontera con Arabia Saudita unas cinco veces “pero fue imposible”; también trataron de escapar dos veces por vía marítima, por la costa oeste. “Teníamos la intención de llegar hasta Djibouti y de ahí tomar un vuelo de regreso a Cuba, pero no pudimos”.
En una de las ocasiones, quisieron subir a un barco en el que iba a viajar personal de UNICEF, pero “el capitán dijo que no podía abordarlo nadie que no fuera” de la entidad de Naciones Unidas.
“Después nos inscribimos en una organización que se llama IOM (International Organization for Migration) con la finalidad de tomar un vuelo, pero tampoco lo conseguimos”, añadió.
Según Nogueira Batista, él y sus compañeros llevan más de diez días refugiados en un edificio de viviendas que pertenecen a un hospital militar de Saná, en el cual hay cinco cubanos trabajando.
“Como se puso tan tensa la situación, ellos se trasladaron al hospital y están viviendo allí y nosotros estamos viviendo en su casa”, explicó. “Es un grupo de edificios rodeado por un muro de alrededor de dos metros y medio de altura y protegido por militares”, añadió.
Señaló que pasan buena parte del tiempo sin electricidad, lo que afecta el suministro de agua, la posibilidad de cargar los teléfonos —vitales para gestionar ayuda— y conservar lo alimentos.
“Afortunadamente aún podemos comprar comida en las tiendas, aunque ya están bastante diezmadas las provisiones”, dijo.
Nogueira Batista calculó que quedan unos 15 cubanos en Yemen. Además de ellos tres y los cinco que trabajan en el hospital militar, cuatro permanecerían en Taiz y habría otros dos en Dhamar.
Según el médico, el hospital privado en el que trabajaban les había retirado el pasaporte.
“Supongo que sea porque, al hacerte el contrato, una vez que te han pagado el pasaje de Cuba a Yemen, se consideran con el derecho a recogerte el pasaporte”, consideró Nogueira Batista.
“En principio, lo hacen con el supuesto objetivo de legalizar tu estancia en el país” y realizar los trámites diplomáticos pertinentes. “Me imagino que también sea para garantizar que tú no puedas irte” de Yemen, señaló.
Tras la evacuación de la embajada “quedamos un poco desprovistos de representación diplomática y de alguien que nos proteja”, dijo el especialista.
Afirmó que, antes de irse, personal de la embajada cubana les dijo que habían dado sus nombres a la embajada rusa y a la Media Luna Roja. “Pero nadie ha contactado con nosotros para hablar de evacuación”.
Indicó que su objetivo “era trabajar, hacer algún dinero y regresar a Cuba” con algo que le permitiera vivir con “una mejor calidad”.
Amigos de los médicos residentes fuera de Cuba han abierto una recogida de firmas en internet para solicitar que la IOM utilice “sus recursos para devolverlos a casa sanos y salvos”.
Los profesionales “han sido abandonados a su suerte”, afirman los impulsores y piden recordar a la IOM “que son vidas valiosas”.
El Gobierno cubano “cerró su embajada y evacuó todo su personal, dejando los médicos atrás, sin garantizarle ni advertirles a tiempo de salir de esa zona de conflicto”, critican.
