FILM ABOUT THE SPANISH-CUBAN-US WAR DEBUTS IN CUBA.
“Cuba Libre”, a film about the Spanish-Cuban-American War in the late nineteenth century, opens today in Havana, in the middle of a new stage in relations with US that brings “extra element” a film readings, warns its director, Cuban Jorge Luis Sanchez.

The tape of time, an ambitious production for films made today on the island, recreates “thorough” and with detail the atmosphere of a story that begins in 1898 and ends in 1899.
The conflict, which agreed three armies (of Spain, US and Cuban mambises -independentistas-), marked the end of Spanish rule in Cuba and the beginning of the US intervention in the island.
“This script is nothing opportunistic, nor is custom,” emphasizes the director, also wrote a narrative centered on the experiences of two children in “a difficult time”, which he conceived in 1998 and began recording in 2013, “long before the December 17″ past, which marked the beginning of the thaw between the US and Cuba. ”
Special attention was given to the recreation of the stage, the costumes and the atmosphere of the time, an effort that took care “from the detail to the general plan,” said the director at a press conference today in Havana.
According to Sanchez, “Free Cuba” took a lot of research, especially the facts concerning the so-called “Buffalo Soldiers,” African Americans soldiers who went to fight to the island as “cannon fodder”, of which “practically is not known nothing “and that will be the first time will be included in a Cuban film.

Produced by the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), the film features performances by renowned Cuban actors Isabel Santos and Manuel Porto, with young people as Adael Rosales, Christian Sanchez and Alejandro Guerrero.
The Norwegian Jo Adrian Haavind plays a US Army colonel, a character who in the official poster of the film is shown giving a handshake to an official mambí image now takes on a new symbolism in the middle of rapprochement between the two countries, which restored relations in July.
“If this film comes out before December 17 would have been otherwise, this now adds an extra element, unthinkable before,” insisted Sanchez.
Jorge Luis Sanchez, has a long career as a documentary filmmaker and premiered his first feature film “El Benny” in 2006, inspired by the life of legendary Cuban musician Benny Moré, followed by the musical “Hopelessly together” in 2011.
His third film, “Cuba Libre” will be released today as a special presentation to be held on this date the “Day of Cuban Culture” and return to theaters during the Film Festival in Havana next December.

Cuba estrena un filme sobre la guerra hispano-cubano-estadounidense tras el deshielo.
“Cuba Libre”, película sobre la guerra hispano-cubano-estadounidense de finales del siglo XIX, se estrena hoy en La Habana, en medio de una nueva etapa en las relaciones con EE.UU. que aporta “un elemento extra” a las lecturas del filme, según advierte su director, el cubano Jorge Luis Sánchez.

La cinta de época, una ambiciosa producción para el cine hecho hoy en la isla, recrea de manera “minuciosa” y con detalle el ambiente de una historia que comienza en 1898 y termina en 1899.
El conflicto, en el que coincidieron tres ejércitos (de España, EE.UU y los mambises -independentistas- cubanos), significó el fin de dominio español en Cuba y el comienzo de la intervención norteamericana en la isla.
“Este guión no tiene nada de oportunista, ni es por encargo”, enfatiza el director, también guionista de una narración centrada en las vivencias de dos niños en “un momento difícil”, que según él concibió en el año 1998 y comenzó a grabar en 2013, “mucho antes del 17 de diciembre” pasado, que marcó el inicio del deshielo entre EE.UU y Cuba”.
Especial atención se prestó a la recreación de los escenarios, el vestuario y el ambiente de la época, un esfuerzo en el que se cuidó “desde el detalle hasta el plano general”, explicó el realizador en conferencia de prensa hoy en La Habana.
Según Sánchez, “Cuba Libre” le tomó mucha investigación, sobre todo los hechos relacionados con los llamados “buffalo soldiers”, soldados afro norteamericanos que viajaron a luchar a la isla como “carne de cañón”, de los que “prácticamente no se conoce nada” y que será la primera vez que se verán incluidos en una película cubana.
“Ésta es una parte de nuestra historia que pasamos por arriba, que deberíamos investigar más”, afirma el realizador, quien confesó sentirse atraído por contar ese “momento complicado”, para muchos causa de deshonra nacional porque significó la frustración de la independencia por la que los mambises cubanos combatieron a España.
Producida por el Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC), la película cuenta con las actuaciones de los reconocidos actores cubanos Isabel Santos y Manuel Porto, junto a jóvenes como Adael Rosales, Christian Sánchez y Alejandro Guerrero.
El noruego Jo Adrián Haavind interpreta a un coronel del ejército norteamericano, personaje que en el cartel oficial del filme aparece dando un apretón de manos a un oficial mambí, imagen que ahora adquiere un nuevo simbolismo en medio del acercamiento entre los dos países, que restablecieron relaciones en julio pasado.
“Si esta película llega a salir antes del 17 de diciembre hubiera sido otra cosa, esto ahora le aporta un elemento extra, impensable antes”, insistió Sánchez.
Jorge Luis Sánchez, posee una larga trayectoria como documentalista y estrenó su primer largometraje “El Benny” en 2006, inspirado en la vida del legendario músico cubano Benny Moré, seguido por el musical “Irremediablemente juntos”, en 2011.
Su tercera película, “Cuba Libre” será estrenada hoy en calidad de presentación especial por celebrarse en esta fecha el “Día de la Cultura Cubana”, y volverá a las salas durante el Festival de Cine de La Habana, el próximo diciembre.
