Jugar canchas para muchos en Cuba significa tener dinero. ‘El frontenis’, un deporte de raquetas que consiste en golpear una pelota de goma contra una pared, es considerado un juego de élites si se juega “con todos los hierros”.

Richard Betancourt, de 19 años, hace ocho meses que dejó de ir a las canchas del complejo deportivo Ciro Frías por no tener raqueta con que jugar. La suya se le fue de las manos en pleno juego y se quebró en 4 partes. El precio de una nueva es más que el salario promedio de un cubano, de poco más de 20 dólares al mes.
“No puedo arreglarla ni comprarme otra. La peor cuesta 25 pesos convertibles (CUC)”, dijo Betancourt, y agregó: “Es decidir entre comer o practicar deportes”.

Su negocio también consiste en vender pelotas y encordar las raquetas.
