Cuba y EE.UU. are building a “Taller” to preserve documents in Hemingway Museum near Habana.
Experts from Cuba and the U.S. who collaborate in the preservation of the legacy of Ernest Hemingway gathered today in “Finca Vigía” Museum in Havana, where participating in the construction of a local to store and restore the documentation that keeps the former home of the American writer in the island.
“This project has been a great step forward between Cubans and Americans to keep the legacy of Ernest Hemingway,” he told the press Jenny Phillips, President of the Foundation “Finca Vigia”, one of the American institutions working with the Cuban Museum to preserve the values that treasures.
Phillips announced that Wednesday came a boat with us building materials for the project to the Cuban port of Mariel, where lies the first special development zone of the island.
The “workshop”, as it is called to the premises that will house a laboratory with an archival store in Havana Museum, will be built with American materials, thus becoming one of the first projects under construction on the island that uses components of the North American country, since the beginning of the embargo for 55 years.

For his part, the President of the National Council of Cultural heritage of Cuba, Gladys Collazo, considered that it is an “important event” for the Cuban heritage this collaboration and highlighted the joint work carried out in the past 14 years between the “Ernest Hemingway” Museum and the Foundation “Finca Vigia, which has enabled the digitization of thousands of documents.
Collazo said that through the American Foundation, in the course of the last year could get funds from donations made by companies of the U.S. as “Caterpillar”, “AT & T”, “American Express” and “Ford Foundation” to create the “workshop”.

The collaboration between the “Finca Vigía” Foundation and the “Hemingway” Museum has allowed to improve the storage conditions to thousands of pieces from the collection of documents and objects that belonged to the author’s Hemingway, noted the Director of the Cuban Museum, Ada Rosa Alfonso.
He said that they have been restored and preserved more than 2.099 pages of documents, more than 3,000 pages of letters, 170 pages of original manuscripts for Hemingway, as well as photographs, albums for clippings, telegrams, dust jacket of books, pamphlets and magazines, among other stationery.
The “Finca Vigía” House, located about 15 kilometers from the center of Havana, was for more than twenty years the Cuban residence of American writer and became the “Museum Ernest Hemingway” after his death on July 2, 1961, when he committed suicide a shot with a shotgun to hunt in Idaho (USA).
Ernest Hemingway spent long seasons since 1939 and until shortly before his tragic death in “Finca Vigia”, where even wrote some of his most famous novels, including “the old man and the sea”, that Nobel Prize for literature won him the prize in 1954.

Expertos de Cuba y EEUU que colaboran en la preservación del legado de Ernest Hemingway se reunieron hoy en el museo de “Finca Vigía” en La Habana, donde participan en la construcción de un local para almacenar y restaurar la documentación que guarda la antigua casa del escritor norteamericano en la isla.
“Este proyecto ha sido un gran paso de avance entre cubanos y estadounidenses para mantener el legado de Ernest Hemingway”, dijo a la prensa Jenny Phillips, presidenta de la Fundación “Finca Vigía”, una de las instituciones estadounidenses que trabajan con el museo cubano para conservar los valores que atesora.

Phillips anunció que este miércoles llegó un barco con materiales de construcción estadounidenses para el proyecto al puerto cubano del Mariel, donde radica la primera Zona Especial de Desarrollo de la isla.
El “Taller”, como se ha denominado al local que albergará un laboratorio con un almacén archivístico en el museo habanero, se edificará con materiales estadounidenses, convirtiéndose así en uno de los primeros proyectos de construcción en la isla que utiliza componentes del país norteamericano, desde el comienzo del embargo hace 55 años.

Por su parte, la presidenta del Consejo Nacional de Patrimonio Cultural de Cuba, Gladys Collazo, consideró que es un “acontecimiento importante” para el patrimonio cubano esta colaboración y resaltó el trabajo conjunto realizado en los últimos 14 años entre el museo “Ernest Hemingway” y la Fundación “Finca Vigía que ha permitido la digitalización de miles de documentos.
Collazo señaló que por intermedio de la Fundación norteamericana, en el transcurso del último año se pudieron obtener fondos provenientes de donaciones realizadas por compañías de EEUU como “Caterpillar”, “AT&T”, “American Express” y “Ford Foundation” para crear el “Taller”.
La donación de “Caterpillar”, asciende a 500.000 dólares, según refirió el presidente y director general de esa empresa, Doug Oberhelman, integrante de la delegación estadounidense, quien dijo que la realización de este trabajo conjunto ha sido un “verdadero puente” cultural entre EEUU y Cuba.
La colaboración entre la Fundación “Finca Vigía” y el museo “Hemingway” ha permitido mejorar las condiciones de almacenamiento a miles de piezas de la colección de documentos y objetos que pertenecieron al autor de Hemingway, destacó la directora del museo cubano, Ada Rosa Alfonso.
Precisó que se han restaurado y conservado más de 2.099 páginas de documentos, más de 3.000 páginas de cartas, 170 páginas de manuscritos originales de Hemingway, así como fotografías, álbumes de recortes, cablegramas, sobrecubierta de libros, folletos y revistas, entre otra papelería.
La casona “Finca Vigía”, situada a unos 15 kilómetros del centro de La Habana, fue durante más de veinte años la residencia cubana del escritor norteamericano y se convirtió en el “Museo Ernest Hemingway” después de su muerte el 2 de julio de 1961, cuando se suicidó de un disparo con una escopeta de caza en Idaho (EE.UU.).
Ernest Hemingway pasó largas temporadas desde 1939 y hasta poco antes de su trágica muerte en “Finca Vigía”, donde incluso escribió parte de algunas de sus más famosas novelas, entre ellas, “El viejo y el mar”, que le mereció el premio Nobel de Literatura en 1954.
