January 18, will be the first export of Cuba to EE. UU. CubaExport (Cuba) and Coabana Trading LLC (USA) signed an agreement for the sale of charcoal to the North American country. It is a modest transaction but unprecedented.
CubaExport companies and the American Coabana Trading LLC signed an agreement for the sale of charcoal Cuban to United States, in the first export of the island to that country in over half a century Thursday in Havana.
Under the terms of the agreement, a first installment of 40 tons of coal of marabou, a tree native to Africa, very hard wood and forming impenetrable in the island forests, should reach United States on January 18, according to local media.
“Marabu manufactured handmade carbon will be the first Cuban product who has access to the US market in the middle of the blockade (embargo) imposed by Washington” to the island, said the digital version of the official daily Granma.
This modest transaction ($420 per tonne), but unprecedented, was possible thanks to the outgoing President Barack Obama easing restrictions in trade against the island, even though the Republican-led Congress is reluctant to lift the embargo, in force since 1962.
Cuba and United States resumed their diplomatic ties in 2015 after half a century of rupture and political confrontation.
Other products such as honey and coffee, produced by cooperatives, private island, could also be imported by the United States, but tobacco, rum and nickel, major Cuban export products, still have not been allowed.
“This is an agreement of great importance to the relations between the two countries”, the President of Coabana Trading LLC, Scott Gilbert, after signing the agreement with the Director of CubaExport, Isabel O’Reilly told the press.
“The most important thing is which means another plank in building the bridge between the United States and Cuba,” added the American Executive.
O’Reilly stressed that the country has “much more availability” charcoal for export to the United States.
According to Granma, CubaExport annually exports between 40,000 and 80,000 tons of charcoal, mainly to Europe.
At the beginning of 2000, the Bill Clinton Administration authorized the export of food and medicine to Cuba, banned by the embargo.
Cuban imports from United States reached 710 million dollars in 2008, but then fell to 290 million in 2014 and 120 million in 2015, due to the restrictive conditions of payment, according to the official Cuban press.

El 18 de enero llegará la primera exportación de Cuba hacia EE. UU. CubaExport (Cuba) y Coabana Trading LLC (EE. UU) suscribieron un acuerdo para la venta de carbón vegetal al país norteamericano. Se trata de una transacción modesta pero sin precedentes.
La empresas CubaExport y la estadounidense Coabana Trading LLC firmaron este jueves en La Habana un acuerdo para la venta de carbón vegetal cubano a Estados Unidos, en la primera exportación de la isla hacia ese país en más medio siglo.
Según los términos del acuerdo, una primera entrega de 40 toneladas de carbón de marabú, un árbol originario de África, de madera muy dura y que forma bosques impenetrables en la isla, deberá llegar a Estados Unidos el 18 de enero, según los medios locales.
“El carbón de marabú fabricado de manera artesanal será el primer producto cubano que acceda al mercado estadounidense en medio del bloqueo (embargo) que impone Washington” a la isla, señaló la versión digital del diario oficial Granma.
Esta transacción modesta (420 dólares por tonelada), pero sin precedentes, fue posible gracias a que el presidente saliente Barack Obama ha flexibilizado las restricciones comerciales contra la isla, aunque el Congreso dominado por los republicanos es renuente a levantar el embargo, vigente desde 1962.
Cuba y Estados Unidos reanudaron sus nexos diplomáticos en 2015 tras medio siglo de ruptura y enfrentamiento político.
Otros rubros como la miel y el café, producidos por cooperativas privadas de la isla, también podrían ser importados por Estados Unidos, pero el tabaco, los rones y el níquel, principales productos de exportación cubanos, aún no han sido autorizados.
“Este es un acuerdo de gran envergadura para las relaciones entre ambos países”, dijo a la prensa el presidente de Coabana Trading LLC, Scott Gilbert, tras firmar el acuerdo con la directora de CubaExport, Isabel O’Reilly.
“Lo más importante es que significa otro tablón más en la construcción del puente entre Estados Unidos y Cuba”, añadió el ejecutivo estadounidense.
O’Reilly subrayó que el país tiene “mucha más disponibilidad” de carbón vegetal para exportar a Estados Unidos.
Según Granma, CubaExport exporta anualmente entre 40.000 y 80.000 toneladas de carbón vegetal, principalmente a Europa.
