Norberto speaks to me as if I were a number. As if everything around him was part of the resolution of a logical equation. He was a professor of physics at a pre-university in the outskirts of Santa Clara but is already retired. He is 70 years old and from 7 he plays the charade. Norberto is Galician white, obese and wears dark glasses and a guano hat because he is newly operated on cataracts.

Norberto plays, religiously, every day, and explains to me sitting in a wooden chair in the living room of his house that the first charade to arrive in Cuba was China, which was played until the number 36, which later came the Dominican and the Cuban one that extended until the 100. The first one because it means lottery and I have come to talk about it. . And the second because I’m wearing a pullover that has that number on the left sleeve. A “cabal”, according to the methods you just explained to me.

“There are sighted people and every morning they say the verse of the day, which is where a lot of people are guided to play. It is a kind of superstitious reading that talks about things and then associates the meaning of those things with numbers. But the charade has evolved a lot and now each number has several meanings, “says Norberto.

Despite playing every day and pretending an irascible obsession with charade, he is very clear about the implications that living for the game can bring. “You have to have conviction and not be manipulated. The money of the house and the food I do not touch, “he explains.

There was a day when he dreamed of a hen surrounded by newborn yellow chicks. He went out on the street and saw everywhere with yellow chick pullovers. A lady who played at La Bolita passed by and told her that the little chick was number 1. It started to rain and in what she sheltered, she passed a car with sunflowers that had the number 1 written on the wood. Way to bet, he ran into a man who put money every day to 1 and that time he said he was not going to play. Norberto counted the sleep chicks: they were 9. He bet 9 and 1 with 10 pesos each. The next day he won 13,000 pesos.

“That’s the good part,” says Norberto. And after winning and winning comes the obsession with triumph. Obfuscation “And that is the one to be feared.”

“I started playing hidden in the 90s because my father was from the communist party. From there I have not stopped. One day I play 50 cents and another 500 pesos. I have an angel and a devil on my shoulders. One tells me to leave it and the other provokes me, “he says. Norberto tells me that a friend of his, who was the manager of a hotel in Quemado de Güines, did not fail in his predictions. Number that put his eye, number that came out. To the point that one day he had no idea what number to bet on and when he arrived at his house he noticed that the door number was number 33, he put 500 pesos to it and he earned a few thousand pesos. But after that, he got a bad spell and started selling the valuable things in the house and borrowing money from the hotel’s administration desk.

He came to owe 300,000 pesos and did not chastise. He looked for a grocer to ask for money and ended up in debt and losing the house and two cars. His wife divorced him and went with the two children to live in the east of the country. After losing the family, an audit detected the shortage of money in the hotel and was handed over to the prosecution. He was sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment.

“Money absorbs you,” says Norberto.

La prohibición del juego de azar más extendido en Cuba ha obligado a los jugadores y a los administradores del negocio a moverse de forma clandestina en redes excelentemente conformadas gracias a su ingenio. Quienes participan, conocen el ganador por la señal de onda corta que emite la radio de Miami, por antenas satelitales o con una aplicación de Android.

En las calles de Cuba se juega más a la Bolita que al béisbol. “No hay ciudad, pueblo ni rincón de la Isla hasta donde no se haya difundido este cáncer devorador: se juega desde la punta de Maisí hasta el cabo de San Antonio”, escribió en el lejano 1832 José Antonio Saco, intelectual cubano del siglo XVIII en su célebre ensayo Memoria sobre la vagancia en Cuba.

Norberto me habla como si yo fuese un número. Como si todo lo que le rodea formara parte de la resolución de una ecuación lógica. Fue profesor de física de un preuniversitario en las afueras de Santa Clara pero ya está jubilado. Tiene 70 años y desde los 7 juega a la charada. Norberto es blanco gallego, obeso y lleva puesto unas gafas oscuras y un sombrero de guano porque está recién operado de cataratas.

Norberto juega, religiosamente, todos los días, y me explica sentado en un sillón de madera en la sala de su casa que la primera charada en llegar a Cuba fue la China, que se jugaba hasta el número 36, que después llegó la dominicana y la cubana que se extendieron hasta el 100. Que existen varios métodos para jugar. Y que uno es la seguidilla de números, que son los números que salen alrededor de otros números. Que otro es la “cábala” o la superstición, que la gente lo asocia a los acontecimientos y al significado de los sueños. Y que el último método es la estadística de la historia de los números que han salido a lo largo del tiempo.

De pronto, me dice que lo espere un instante, que tiene que salir a cobrar un dinero que le deben de ayer y que de paso le apostará hoy al 89 y al 3. El primero porque significa lotería y yo he venido a hablarle de ella. Y el segundo porque llevo puesto un pulóver que en la manga izquierda tiene ese número. Una “cábala”, según los métodos que me acaba de explicar.

“Hay personas videntes y todas las mañanas dicen el verso del día, que es por donde mucha gente se guía para jugar. Es una especie de lectura supersticiosa que habla de cosas y luego se asocia el significado de esas cosas a los números. Pero la charada ha evolucionado mucho y ya cada número tiene varios significados”, dice Norberto.

A pesar de jugar todos los días y de aparentar una obsesión irascible hacia la charada, tiene bien claro las implicaciones que puede traer consigo vivir para el juego. “Hay que tener convicción y no dejarse manipular. El dinero de la casa y de la comida yo no lo toco”, explica.

Hubo un día en el que soñó con una gallina rodeada de pollitos amarillos recién nacidos. Salió a la calle y vio por todos lados personas con pulóveres amarillos color pollito. Pasó una señora que juega a la Bolita y le dijo que pollito chiquito era el número 1. Empezó a llover y en lo que se guarecía, por delante le pasó un carretón con girasoles que llevaba el número 1 escrito en la madera. Camino a apostar, se topó con un hombre que le ponía dinero todos los días al 1 y que esa vez le dijo que no iba a jugar. Norberto contó los pollitos del sueño: eran 9. Le apostó al 9 y al 1 con 10 pesos a cada uno. Al otro día ganó 13,000 pesos.

“Esa es la parte buena”, dice Norberto. Y después de ganar y ganar viene la obsesión con el triunfo. La ofuscación. “Y a esa es a la que hay que temerle”.

“Empecé a jugar escondido en los 90 porque mi padre era del partido comunista. Desde ahí no he parado. Un día juego 50 centavos y otro 500 pesos. Tengo un ángel y un diablo en los hombros. Uno me dice que lo deje y el otro me provoca”, afirma. Me cuenta Norberto que un amigo suyo, que era administrador de un hotel en Quemado de Güines no fallaba en sus predicciones. Número que le ponía el ojo, número que salía. Al punto que un día no tenía idea a qué número apostarle y cuando llegó a su casa se fijó que el número de la puerta era el 33, a ese mismo le puso 500 pesos y se ganó unos cuantos miles de pesos. Pero después de aquello le llegó una mala racha y comenzó a vender las cosas valiosas de la casa y a tomar dinero prestado de la caja administradora del hotel.

Llegó a deber 300,000 pesos y no escarmentó. Buscó un garrotero para pedirle dinero y terminó endeudado y perdiendo la casa y dos carros. Su mujer se divorció de él y se fue con los dos hijos a vivir al oriente del país. Luego de perder a la familia, una auditoría detectó el faltante de dinero en el hotel y fue entregado a la fiscalía. Lo condenaron a 4 años de privación de libertad.

“El dinero te absorbe”, dice Norberto.
