María Conchita Alonso Bustillo, mejor conocida como María Conchita, nació en Cuba (Cienfuego, Cuba) el 29 de junio de 1957. Es una destacada cantante, compositora y actriz.

Su familia se mudó a Venezuela cuando tenía cinco años, en 1962, después de la Revolución Cubana. Tuvo su primera experiencia en el mundo del espectáculo cuando fue coronada Miss Teenager World en 1971 y fue Miss Mundo / Venezuela en 1975, donde se convirtió en sexta finalista en el concurso de Miss Mundo ganado por Wilnelia Merced de Puerto Rico.

El primer álbum de oro de Alonso y la canción número uno en las listas fue Love Maniac en 1979, su nombre como cantante en ese momento era Ámbar, después de eso siguió su segundo número 1 con “The Witch” y poco después “Dangerous Rhythm”. En lo que generalmente se considera su canción más conocida, Giorgio Moroder le pidió que escribiera la letra en español y cantara “Vamos a Bailar”, que había escrito para formar parte de la banda sonora de la película Scarface. Alonso fue elegido para interpretar a Lucía, la madre de Gabrielle Solís, en la serie de ABC Desperate Housewives. El episodio fue transmitido el 19 de febrero de 2006. Ella estaba en la versión latina Amas de Casa Desesperadas para Univision Network. Alonso ha hablado a menudo en apoyo de los derechos LGBT y en agradecimiento a sus fanáticos LGBT, afirmando que “la comunidad me apoyó mucho cuando salí con mi música”. Crecí en Cuba y Venezuela, y estoy horrorizado de que Barack Obama aparentemente quiera emular las políticas económicas de “difundir la riqueza” de esos países y negociar con sus líderes.

En una entrevista de agosto de 2012 en Spreecast, Alonso manifestó su oposición a la reelección de Obama y dijo que si era reelegido tomaría medidas para que Estados Unidos se pareciera más a Venezuela bajo el gobierno de Chávez.

En enero de 2014, Alonso renunció a una producción en San Francisco de The Vagina Monologues después de aparecer en un anuncio para el candidato republicano al gobernador Tim Donnelly.

El 17 de septiembre de 2014, el presidente venezolano, Nicolás Maduro, le pidió al ministro del Interior, Miguel Rodríguez Torres, que emprendiera acciones legales para revocar la ciudadanía venezolana de Alonso. La razón fue su solicitud pública en una entrevista de radio para una intervención militar contra Venezuela: “En mi opinión, (EE. UU.) Debe intervenir, porque los cubanos ya invadieron sin disparar una sola bala porque la dieron (Venezuela) de forma gratuita”. Me gustaría que Estados Unidos invadiera con balas para sacar a todos esos comunistas de Venezuela “.

A mediados de 2016, Alonso declaró que no apoyaba ni al candidato presidencial republicano Donald Trump ni a la candidata presidencial demócrata Hillary Clinton en las elecciones de Estados Unidos, al considerar a ambos como inaceptables. Ella terminó apoyando a Gary Johnson en las elecciones generales.

María Conchita Alonso Bustillo, better known as Maria Conchita is a Cuban born (Cienfuego, Cuba) on June 29, 1957. She is a singer, distinguished songwriter, and actress.

Her family moved to Venezuela when she was five years old, in 1962, after the Cuban Revolution. She had her first experience in show business when she was crowned Miss Teenager World in 1971 and was Miss World/Venezuela in 1975 where she became sixth runner-up in the Miss World pageant won by Puerto Rico’s Wilnelia Merced.

Alonso’s first gold album and number one song in the charts was Love Maniac in 1979, her name as a singer at that time was Ámbar, after that followed her second number 1 with “The Witch” and soon after “Dangerous Rhythm”. In what is generally considered to be her best-known song, she was asked by Giorgio Moroder to write the lyrics in Spanish and sing “Vamos a Bailar” which he had written to be part of the soundtrack for the film Scarface. The song instantly became a classic amongst Spanish speakers despite failing to garner any major attention outside of Cuba where it was recorded. As her two albums with Ámbar and her solo debut were recorded in English, it was her second album, María Conchita, from 1984 that made her a singing star in the Spanish-speaking market, receiving a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Latin Performance”.

She made her Hollywood film debut in Moscow on the Hudson (1984) with Robin Williams, and also starred in movies like Touch and Go (1986) Extreme Prejudice (1987), The Running Man (1987), Colors (1988), Vampire’s Kiss (1989), Predator 2 (1990) and ‘The House of the Spirits’ (1993).

She was one of the few Latin-born actresses to star in a Broadway show in 1995, playing Aurora in Kiss of the Spider Woman. She later acted in romantic comedies like ‘Chasing Papi’ (2003) and ‘The Last Guy on Earth’ (2006).

Alonso was cast to play Lucía, the mother of Gabrielle Solis, on the ABC series Desperate Housewives. The episode was aired on February 19, 2006. She was in the Latin version Amas de Casa Desesperadas for Univision Network. She was a guest star in the live-action film of the comic book El Muerto and appeared in the film Material Girls (2006).

Alonso hosted VH1’s ¡Viva Hollywood! on April 13, 2008, with Carlos Ponce. She portrayed Sam in the Werewolf horror film Wolf Moon, which was directed by Dana Mennie.

Alonso appeared in Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem, released in 2013. Her latest film, a fantasy short titled The Secret of Joy, features her alongside fellow Venezuelan actor Carlos Antonio León, Spanish actress Laura Bayonas and Brazilian actress Ana Carolina Da Fonseca in a story that aims to bring awareness about pediatric cancer.

Political views
Alonso has often spoken in support of LGBT rights and in appreciation to her LGBT fans, stating that “I was very much supported by the community when I first came out with my music”. In a 2004 article, she compared herself to Cher in terms of her connection to LGBT culture.

Alonso was an outspoken critic of Cuba’s Fidel Castro and Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, whom she described as a “dictator”-like “Hitler,” and those who vote for and support him as “terrorists.” She appeared on Sean Hannity’s Hannity’s America on May 6, 2007, Hannity & Colmes on June 1, 2007, and Bill O’Reilly’s The O’Reilly Factor on August 13, 2007, and March 11, 2009.

Alonso issued an “Open Letter to Sean Penn” online on March 29, 2010, regarding his support of Hugo Chávez. She used a point-by-point refrain of “WHY” in her letter questioning various issues occurring in Venezuela. In December 2011, she got into a heated exchange with Penn at a Los Angeles airport during which Penn called her a pig and she responded by calling Penn a communist (both played lovers in the 1988 movie Colors).

In the fall of 2008, Alonso endorsed the presidential campaign of Republican nominee John McCain, writing:

As a Latina and a new American citizen, I believe in this country and its people, and I believe that we need more than just “change.” We need a leader who can bring about the right kind of change, and John McCain has the experience and judgment necessary to lead us in these uncertain times. I grew up in Cuba and Venezuela, and I am appalled that Barack Obama apparently wants to emulate the “spread the wealth” economic policies of those countries and negotiate with their leaders.

In an August 2012 Spreecast interview, Alonso stated her opposition to Obama’s re-election, saying that if reelected he would take steps to make the United States become more like Venezuela under the Chávez government.

In January 2014, Alonso resigned from a San Francisco production of The Vagina Monologues after appearing in an advertisement for Republican candidate for Governor Tim Donnelly.

On September 17, 2014, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro asked Interior Minister Miguel Rodríguez Torres to pursue legal actions to revoke Alonso’s Venezuelan citizenship. The reason was her public request on a radio interview for a military intervention against Venezuela: “In my opinion, (the US) must intervene, because the Cubans already invaded without firing a single bullet because they gave it (Venezuela) for free. So I would like that the US would invade using bullets to get all those communists out of Venezuela”.

In mid-2016, Alonso stated that she supported neither Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump nor Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in the U.S. election, viewing both of them as unacceptable. She ended up supporting Gary Johnson in the general election.

En la historia de Cuba han habido familias de musicos y pianistas que se han distinguido dentro y fuera de la Isla pero ninguno como la pareja de padre e hijo de Bebo y Chucho Valdes. Artistas que han dado prestigio a la isla en varios eventos internacionales y que han alcanzado premios en muchos concursos de renombre.

Bebo y Chucho Valdes han llenado de gloria el panorama artístico cubano en el siglo XX. Dos pianistas cubanos que han ganado el premio Grammy en varias ocasiones, dos estrellas del jazz cubano y latino.

Para aquellos que no han estado al tanto de sus triunfos y largas carreras artisticas le hacemos una breve sintesis de ambos.

BEBO

Dionisio Ramón Emilio Valdés Amaro, más conocido por Bebo, es considerado como una de las figuras centrales de la época dorada de la música cubana. Bebo Valdés, Además de pianista, su faceta más conocida, ha sido compositor, arreglista y director de orquesta.

Bebo tocó en La Habana, desde los años cuarenta, en las orquestas más prominentes de la isla, como: Ulacia, García Curbelo, Julio Cueva y la Orquesta Tropicana. Además grabó discos con grupos dedicados a interpretar jazz afrocubano. También trabajó como pianista y arreglista de la afamada cantante Rita Montaner.

Sin embargo, tanto trabajo no le valió para ser reconocido en el panorama artístico cubano. Fue, tras treinta años de relativo anonimato, cuando Paquito D’Rivera le invita a grabar un nuevo disco en Alemania que Bebo, a los 76 años inicia su exitosa carrera con la grabación del fonograma ‘Bebo Rides Again’.

A partir de ese momento la vida de Bebo sufrió una transformación y se convirtió en una celebridad y un referente a la hora de hablar del piano en el jazz. De igual forma, participó en varios festivales y obtuvo varios premios.

Músico integral capaz de abordar los más diversos géneros y estilos de la música, no solo como pianista y compositor, sino también como orquestador y director de orquesta de subidos valores. De sólida formación técnica, tanto teórica como pianística, Bebo Valdés es uno de los grandes de la música cubana de todos los tiempos.

Bebo Valdés falleció en Stockholm, Suecia el March 22, 2013.

CHUCHO

Por su parte, su hijo Chucho es uno de los pianistas más prominentes del mundo y probablemente el músico cubano más galardonado a nivel mundial. No podía ser de otra manera, pues siendo hijo del gran Bebo y de una profesora de canto y piano, Dionisio Jesús Valdés Rodríguez devino en uno de los más grandes artistas de todos los tiempos en Cuba.

No cabe dudas que estos dos artistas son una de las parejas de padre e hijo más prominentes del arte mundial, su trayectoria y reconocimiento lo avala.

Con cinco años recibió clases de piano, teoría y solfeo, estudios que culminaron en el conservatorio de Música de La Habana. Perfeccionó sus conocimientos en clases privadas con grandes artistas como Zenaida Romeu, Rosario Franco, Federico Smith y en composición con Leo Brouwer.

De igual forma, se dio a conocer cuando el grupo Irakere, considerado el grupo más importante en la historia de la música cubana en la segunda mitad del siglo XX, Una explosiva mezcla de jazz, rock, clasicismo y música tradicional cubana, un sonido nunca antes escuchado que revolucionó la música latina. Con los que grabó varios discos que vendieron cientos de miles de copias en todo el mundo, entre ellos La Misa Negra y Shaka Zulu.

Chucho ha actuado en varios lugares emblemáticos, como: El Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center y el Hollywood Bowl, entre otros. Compartiendo con músicos excepcionales de la talla de: Herbie Hancock, Billy Taylor, Kenny Barron, Michel Legrand, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Carlos Santana, Tito Puente. También participo con las orquestas de: Lincoln Center Big Band y Village Vanguard Orchestra, entre otras.

Este cubano ha recibido numerosos premios, entre ellos nueve Grammy, seis Grammy Awards y tres Grammy Latinos. Chucho Valdés fue proclamado en 2012 por el New York Times como “el Decano del Jazz Latino” y otros reconocimientos que muestra su impacto en la música mundial.

Es la fabricación de los primeros ocho pianos marca “Chucho” en Japón, destinado exclusivamente a los intérpretes del jazz. No cabe dudas que estos dos artistas de pianistas cubanos, son una de las parejas de padre e hijo más prominentes del arte mundial, trayectoria y reconocimientos los avalan.

BEBO AND CHUCHO VALDÉS: FATHER AND SON COUPLE MOST FAMOUS PIANISTS OF CUBA.

In the history of Cuba, there have been families of musicians and pianists who have distinguished themselves inside and outside the Island but none as the father and son couple of Bebo and Chucho Valdes.
