Surrounded by members of his family, Cuban player José Abreu kept his head down for a while after hearing that he was the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the American League. He wanted to savor the occasion as much as possible: “it was a very special moment,” he commented minutes later.

Abreu, a player for the Chicago White Sox, earned the distinction Thursday, a reward for the power he brought to the team to advance to the playoffs for the first time since 2008, the AP reported.

The first baseman featured on 21 of the 30 first-place ballots in the ballot by the Baseball Writers Association of North America (BBWAA).

José Ramírez, the third baseman for Cleveland, finished second in the vote. Third place went to DJ LeMahieu, an infielder for the New York Yankees.

Abreu led the majors with 60 RBIs and 148 total bases. He led the American League with 76 hits and a .617 slugging. He played in all 60 games of the pandemic-shortened campaign, and Chicago qualified as a wild card.

The 33-year-old hit .317 with 19 home runs. He hit six home runs in a three-game series against the Cubs in late August.

That barrage of home runs at Wrigley Field was part of a streak for Abreu, who hit a hit in 22 straight games. It was the longest run of its kind in the year.

Abreu was the AL Rookie of the Year in 2014 and has appeared in the All-Star Game three times.

Only two Cubans had previously won the award: José Canseco with Oakland in 1988 and Zoilo Versalles with Minnesota in 1965.

José Abreu is the fourth non-White Sox player to win the MVP award, joining Frank Thomas (1993-94), Dick Allen (1972) and Nellie Fox (1959).

The Cuban gave the credit to manager Rick Renteria, who left the team after the season. The White Sox said the exit was by mutual consent.

Hall of Famer Tony La Russa was recently hired as the new manager for the White Sox and Abreu said he was looking forward to working with him. “You have to move on,” he commented.
