Las ruinas que hoy vemos en la calle Calzada entre 2 y Paseo en el Vedado, La Habana, pertenecen a El “Trotcha”, primer hotel que se construyó en esta barriada residencial, y tal vez la primera instalación de veraneo creada a poca distancia de La Habana.

En 1880, Don Buenaventura Trotcha, catalán llegado a Cuba en 1850, se dedicó a la compra de terrenos en la zona vedada más allá de las canteras de San Lázaro.

El Vedado, era zona prohibida a los pobres, solo los grandes comerciantes y adinerados emigraban hacia el entonces sereno y calmo barrio, todavía sin muro del Malecón y abundante en terrenos casi vírgenes

Buenaventura adquiere una porción de los terrenos del Conde de Pozos Dulces con el propósito de construirse una lujosa vivienda próxima al mar.

En 1886 quedó inaugurada, pero el comerciante no se conformó y quiso sacar provecho a su propia casa y compartir con otros su pasión: la buena mesa.

Comidas españolas, criollas y francesas, acompañadas de los mejores vinos, eran su regocijo. Por eso ordenó acondicionar algunos salones y jardines como adorables sitios de estar, y en ese paraíso encontró aposento la “Sociedad del Vedado”, fundada por él.

Por toda la ciudad corría la noticia: las mejores comidas de La Habana se podían degustar en su Salón de Recreación y asi nace el “Trotcha”.

Un Salón de atractivas condiciones por sus relieves y buen drenaje, pues este incansable catalán hizo posible la llegada al Vedado del Canal de Albear.

Fue construido a dos niveles, una planta baja con billar, restaurante, sala de lectura y varios espacios complementarios y una planta superior o entrepiso considerada principal, con columnas de hierro y vigas metálicas forradas de madera a la que se accedía por una deslumbrante escalera de mármol blanco con barandas de hierro.

Convertido en Hotel en 1890, Don Ventura decide modificar el “Trotcha” y fabricó sobre el entrepiso dos plantas con 20 habitaciones y corredores a su alrededor, una suite, servicios sanitarios comunes, cocina, restaurante-bar y rodeó la instalación de preciosos jardines.

Con el paso de los años han ido surgiendo leyendas que algo deben tener de verdadero. Se dice que allí se hospedó el poeta nicaragüense Rubén Darío, aunque otros afirman que sólo visitó el hotel, el famoso torero De Mazzantini, se cuenta que vivió en el Trotcha un idilio amoroso con la no menos famosa actriz Sarah Bernhardt

Pero más allá de las leyendas, lo cierto es que el Trotcha albergó a personalidades importantes y dio brillo al Vedado. Luego llegó el implacable tiempo, y el hotel, que había devenido edificio de vivienda, se fue destruyendo poco a poco, tal como va pasando a todo lo largo y ancho de nuestra Isla por un sistema agotado.

The ruins that we see today on Calzada Street between 2 and Paseo en el Vedado, Havana, belong to El “Trotcha”, the first hotel that was built in this residential neighborhood, and perhaps the first summer installation created a short distance from Havana.

In 1880, Don Buenaventura Trotcha, a Catalan who arrived in Cuba in 1850, dedicated himself to the purchase of land in the closed area beyond the San Lázaro quarries.

El Vedado was a zone forbidden to the poor, only the great merchants and wealthy emigrated to the then serene and calm neighborhood, still without the wall of the Malecón and abundant in almost virgin lands

Buenaventura acquires a portion of the lands of the Conde de Pozos Dulces with the purpose of building a luxurious home next to the sea.

In 1886 it was inaugurated, but the merchant did not conform and wanted to take advantage of his own house and share his passion with others: good food.

Spanish, Creole and French meals, accompanied by the best wines, were there rejoicing. That is why he ordered some salons and gardens to be set up as adorable places to stay, and in that paradise, he found the “Vedado Society”, founded by him.

The news ran throughout the city: the best meals of Havana could be tasted in the Recreation Room and the “Trotcha” was born.

A Hall of attractive conditions for its reliefs and good drainage, because this tireless Catalan made possible the arrival to the Vedado of the Albear Canal.

It was built on two levels, a ground floor with billiards, restaurant, reading room and several additional spaces and a top floor or mezzanine considered main, with iron columns and metal beams lined with wood that was accessed by a dazzling staircase white marble with iron railings.

Converted into a Hotel in 1890, Don Ventura decided to modify the “Trotcha” and built on the mezzanine two floors with 20 rooms and corridors around it, a suite, common sanitary services, kitchen, restaurant-bar and surrounded the installation of beautiful gardens.

Over the years, legends have emerged that must have something true. It is said that the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío stayed there, although others say that he only visited the hotel, the famous bullfighter De Mazzantini, it is said that he lived in the Trotcha a loving idyll with the not less famous actress Sarah Bernhardt

But beyond the legends, the truth is that the Trotcha hosted important personalities and brightened the Vedado. Then came the implacable time, and the hotel, which had become a housing building, was gradually destroyed, as it is happening throughout the length and breadth of our island by an exhausted system.
