Enriqueta Faber, la doctora rebelde que se hizo pasar por un hombre en la Cuba colonial. La cinta cubana ‘Insumisas’ se basa en la historia real de la primera cirujana que ejerció la medicina legal en la isla.

En estos tiempos en los que el mundo clama por los derechos de las mujeres y contra el machismo, la increíble vida de Enriqueta Faber resuena con más impacto y se eleva como ejemplo de coraje.

Nacida en Lausana (Suiza), se hizo pasar por un hombre para estudiar medicina. Participó en las guerras napoleónicas y sin que esté muy claro porqué se estableció a principios del siglo XIX en Cuba.

En la isla mantuvo su identidad masculina como Enrique Faber. Ejerció la medicina legal durante tres años y se casó con otra mujer, Juana de León. La cirujana fue finalmente descubierta: sufrió el ensañamiento público y la cárcel.

Los directores Fernando Pérez y Laura Cazador han ficcionado la odisea de Faber en ‘Insumisas’. La cinta cubano-suiza ha sido muy aplaudida en el Festival de Málaga donde compite por la Biznaga de Oro a mejor película iberoamericana.

Los realizadores explican en una entrevista con RTVE.es que su objetivo era enfocarse en las conexiones contemporáneas de la historia en una llamada a la reflexión.

“Lo que quisimos transmitir es esa esencia transgresora que tuvo. El papel de adelantada a su tiempo y cómo enfrentó los prejuicios y pudo superar todos esos obstáculos que le imponía el orden establecido de la época”, señala Laura Cazador.

Fernando Pérez completa con el espejo de la realidad: “Muchos de esos prejuicios no han sido superados todavía. Hace dos meses se hizo un referéndum en Cuba para aprobar la nueva Constitución. Uno de los puntos era proponer el matrimonio igualitario entre personas del mismo sexo. Se discutió esa ley pero al final no se aprobó lo cual te demuestra que hay mucho camino por andar”.

De larga trayectoria, Pérez es uno de los directores cubanos más prestigiosos con títulos como la muy galardonada Últimos días en La Habana (2015).

Insumisas ha sido escrita y dirigida a dos manos con la debutante Laura Cazador de nacionalidad Suiza aunque radicada en Cuba, que ha aportado una mirada femenina directa.

Ambos cineastas han empujado la idea de no apuntalar el drama, ni siquiera hay música que lo subraye, en una narración de emociones contenidas. Nos presentan un mosaico de mujeres fuertes que se rebelan en un ambiente brutal y son castigadas por ello.

En el caso de Enriqueta Faber, en una excelente interpretación de la actriz francesa Sylvie Testud, fue sometida a un demoledor juicio en 1823. Las actas del tribunal son las únicas fuentes directas reales que se conservan en La Habana sobre su calvario. Fueron investigadas por los directores y el filme reproduce algunas de las frases exactas de la durísima acusación de la fiscalía.

“Fue realmente un juicio de escarmiento para demostrar conceptos de moral religiosa. Si escuchas los textos acusatorios te preguntas cómo es posible. Fue como una cacería de brujas medieval”, relata Pérez.

Tras un humillante examen ginecológico, también documentado, la doctora suiza fue condenada a diez años de cárcel en una sentencia escandalosa. “Aunque la destruyeron, en la historia real ella se rebeló hasta el final y era una mujer muy fuerte. Durante sus años en la cárcel provocó reyertas, se intentó suicidar, escaparse y al final no podían con ella y decidieron deportarla a Nueva Orleans. Ahí se le pierde ya la pista”, explica el director de Suite Habana.

Este drama histórico cuenta con una fotografía espectacular en los característicos tonos azulados de la filmografía de Fernando Pérez. Como anécdota, algunas escenas se rodaron en mitad del azote del huracán Irma. Casi un paralelismo con el irreductible carácter de la formidable Enriqueta/Enrique.

“Todo indica que estuvo en Nueva Orleans y que siguió siendo médico pero esta vez como religiosa”, apunta Laura Cazador y apostilla Fernando Pérez: “Lo cual es increíble, pensar que Enriqueta se pudo convertir en una monjita que rezaba todos los días”.

Y reflexiona la joven cineasta: “Era otro disfraz para lograr su objetivo, creo yo”.

The filmmakers explain in an interview with RTVE.es that their goal was to focus on the contemporary connections of history in a call to reflection.

‘Insumisas’ has been written and directed in two hands with the debutante Laura Cazador of Swiss nationality although based in Cuba, which has contributed a direct feminine look.

Both filmmakers have pushed the idea of ​​not propping up the drama, not even music that underlines it, in a narrative of contained emotions. They present us with a mosaic of strong women who rebel in a brutal environment and are punished for it.

This historical drama features a spectacular photograph in the characteristic bluish tones of Fernando Pérez’s filmography. As an anecdote, some scenes were shot in the middle of the scourge of Hurricane Irma. Almost a parallel with the irreducible character of the formidable Enriqueta / Enrique.

“Everything indicates that she was in New Orleans and that she continued to be a doctor but this time as a nun”, points out Laura Cazador and Fernando Pérez: “Which is incredible, thinking that Enriqueta could become a nun who prayed every day”.
