MADRID- La Embajada de EE UU en Cuba advirtió este martes a través de sus redes sociales que ha recibido información sobre denegaciones de entrada a estadounidenses a su llegada a la Isla, así como órdenes de que nacionales “abandonen el país de inmediato bajo amenaza de detención”.
La sede diplomática no ha ilustrado la situación con ningún ejemplo que permita hacerse una idea de las causas alegadas, aunque una fuente cercana a la embajada ha expresado su “preocupación” ante el riesgo de que se repita lo que ocurrió en Venezuela cuando el régimen chavista “encarceló a ciudadanos americanos y los usó como rehenes para negociar” con Washington.
La embajada puntualiza que no puede mediar en cuestiones de entradas y salidas de Cuba, aunque sí puede prestar asistencia consular a los ciudadanos estadounidenses que la soliciten y para ello reitera sus vías de contacto telefónico y a través de redes sociales.
El mensaje ha sido calificado como “de rutina” por la sede consular, lo que significa que contiene información administrativa y no confidencial, y añade una lista de las normas a seguir si se quiere viajar a la Isla, entre ellas obtener un visado y, posteriormente, revisar los artículos prohibidos en la Aduana, como los cigarrillos electrónicos, teléfonos satelitales y drones, entre otros dispositivos. Además, recuerda que la cantidad de dinero en efectivo que se puede pasar a Cuba sin declarar está establecida en 5.000 dólares –o la misma cantidad en pesos cubanos–.
“El incumplimiento de las leyes cubanas de inmigración y aduanas puede dar lugar a confiscaciones, sanciones severas o detenciones”, subraya. También insta a los viajeros a facilitar un eventual registro policial o de inmigración. “Mantenga la calma y siga todas las instrucciones. Sea cortés y profesional”, añade.
El mensaje no se ha vinculado a ninguna información o denuncia precedente conocida de estadounidenses a los que se haya impedido la entrada o expulsado del país, aunque recientemente llegaron a Cuba dos cargamentos con ayuda humanitaria de EE UU al oriente del país, concretamente a Holguín y Santiago de Cuba. Los kits contenían fundamentalmente paquetes de comida, higiene y agua para los damnificados por el huracán Melissa, que pasó por la Isla en noviembre.
De acuerdo con las partes vinculadas, Cáritas Cuba ha sido la encargada de recibir y distribuir la ayuda, aunque en ambas operaciones han participado organizaciones internacionales como Catholic Relief Services y Cáritas Alemania, que han apoyado la logística y el financiamiento.
El secretario de Estado de EE UU, Marco Rubio, avisó el pasado martes 13 de la salida de la ayuda, valorada en tres millones de dólares, mientras el Gobierno de Cuba –que dijo aceptar el donativo, por estar sufragado por la población contribuyente– reprochó a la Administración de Donald Trump que no hubiera comunicado oficialmente el envío, del que –dijo– supo por la Iglesia católica.

MADRID – The US Embassy in Cuba warned on Tuesday via its social media channels that it has received information about entry denials for Americans arriving on the island, as well as orders for nationals to “leave the country immediately under threat of detention.”
The diplomatic mission has not illustrated the situation with any examples that would provide insight into the reasons given, although a source close to the embassy has expressed “concern” about the risk of a repeat of what happened in Venezuela when the Chávez regime “imprisoned American citizens and used them as hostages to negotiate” with Washington.
The embassy clarifies that it cannot intervene in matters of entry and exit from Cuba, although it can provide consular assistance to US citizens who request it, and for this purpose, it reiterates its contact methods by telephone and through social media.
The message has been described as “routine” by the consular office, meaning that it contains administrative and non-confidential information, and includes a list of rules to follow when traveling to the island, including obtaining a visa and, subsequently, reviewing the items prohibited by Customs, such as e-cigarettes, satellite phones, and drones, among other devices. It also reminds travelers that the amount of cash that can be brought into Cuba without declaring it is set at $5,000 – or the equivalent amount in Cuban pesos.
“Failure to comply with Cuban immigration and customs laws may result in confiscations, severe penalties, or detention,” it emphasizes. It also urges travelers to cooperate with any police or immigration search. “Remain calm and follow all instructions. Be courteous and professional,” it adds.
The message has not been linked to any known prior information or reports of Americans being denied entry to or expelled from the country, although two shipments of humanitarian aid from the U.S. recently arrived in eastern Cuba, specifically in Holguín and Santiago de Cuba. The kits primarily contained food, hygiene, and water supplies for those affected by Hurricane Melissa, which struck the island in November.
According to the parties involved, Caritas Cuba was responsible for receiving and distributing the aid, although international organizations such as Catholic Relief Services and Caritas Germany participated in both operations, providing logistical and financial support.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the departure of the aid, valued at three million dollars, last Tuesday, November 13, while the Cuban government—which said it accepted the donation because it was funded by private citizens—criticized the Trump administration for not officially notifying them of the shipment, which they said they learned about through the Catholic Church.
