Jorge Mas Canosa nació en Santiago de Cuba el 21 septiembre de 1939 siendo un activista cubano-estadounidense mejor conocido por su fuerte oposición a Fidel Castro, su liderazgo en la Fundación Nacional Cubano Americana y en el area de los negocios.
En su juventud pertenece a los jóvenes AJEF masónico donde se distinguió como líder. Estudió en la escuela privada Juan Bautista Sagarra (semi-militar Académico), donde era alcanzó el grado de teniente.
En 1957 se fue a estudiar en los EE.UU. (Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton, North Carolina), por el peligro real de la situacion imperante en el pais, aun cuando su padre era un capitán-vetenarian en las Fuerzas Militares del ejercito regular, su padre siempre fue considerado como una persona pacífica y decente dentro de dicha institucion militar.
Cuando regresa a Cuba en 1959 se inscribió en la Universidad de Oriente para continuar sus estudios, y desde ese momento empezó a conspirar contra el gobierno de Castro, pero pudo escapar a los EE.UU.
Fue considerado por algunos como la figura principal en la comunidad de exiliados cubanos en Miami, Florida. Mas Canosa se ofreció como voluntario para luchar en la fracasada invasión de Bahía de Cochinos en 1961 poco después de que Castro había tomado el control político de Cuba, junto con una parte de exilados invasores no logro desembarcar en su estrategia de entrar por la provincia de Oriente.
En los EE.UU. sus esfuerzos fueron esenciales para la creación de Radio y TV Martí, Transmisiones a la Isla de Cuba desde el territorio de los EE.UU. que ha recibido desde su fundacion y programacion la interferencia del gobierno cubano a sus Transmisiones, aunque se escucha en distintos lugares de la isla.
Sus padres fueron el Dr. Ramón Mas Cayado y Josefa del Carmen Aguilera Canosa y sus hermanos Nancy, Ramón, Ricardo y Raúl Mas Canosa-. Estaba casado con Irma Santos-Espronceda y tuvieron tres hijos, Juan Carlos, Ramón José, y Jorge Mas-Santos, quienes aun se mantienen activos en las gestiones de la Fundacion Nacional Cubana Americana y la Empresa MasTech.
Jorge Mas murió el 23 noviembre de 1997 y fue enterrado en el Cementerio Woodlawn Park Mausoleo (ahora Caballero Rivero Woodlawn North Park Cementerio y Mausoleo).

Debe su nombre a una escuela intermedia en el condado de Miami-Dade, Florida, que abrió sus puertas en agosto de 2007.
Torre de la Libertad
En 1997, Mas Canosa adquirió la Torre de la Libertad en Miami por 4,2 millones de dólares.
La Torre de la Libertad, entre 1962 y 1974, sirvió como Centro de Refugiados Cubanos, un centro de ayuda crucial para cientos de miles de refugiados cubanos que huían del comunismo y la persecución política. Estos inmigrantes transformarían Miami. Tras varias décadas de abandono, la Torre fue rescatada por líderes de la comunidad cubanoamericana que buscaban honrar el legado cubano en Miami y la donaron al Miami Dade College en 2005. Actualmente (2025) restaurada fue inaugurada como Museo Patriótico Cubano.

Jorge Mas Canosa was born in Santiago de Cuba on September 21, 1939, and is a Cuban-American activist best known for his strong opposition to Fidel Castro, his leadership of the Cuban American National Foundation, and his business career.
In his youth, he belonged to the Masonic AJEF (Young Men’s Association of the Cuban American Federation of Veterans), where he distinguished himself as a leader. He studied at the private Juan Bautista Sagarra School (a semi-military academic school), where he achieved the rank of lieutenant.
In 1957, he went to study in the United States (Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton, North Carolina), due to the real danger of the prevailing situation in the country. Although his father was a veteran captain in the regular army, his father was always considered a peaceful and decent person within that military institution.
When he returned to Cuba in 1959, he enrolled at the Universidad de Oriente to continue his studies, and from that moment on, he began plotting against Castro’s government, but was able to escape to the United States.
He was considered by some to be the leading figure in the Cuban exile community in Miami, Florida. Mas Canosa volunteered to fight in the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, shortly after Castro had taken political control of Cuba. Along with a group of invading exiles, he failed to land in his strategy to enter through Oriente province.
In the United States, his efforts were essential to the creation of Radio and TV Martí, broadcasting to the island of Cuba from U.S. territory. Since its founding, the station has suffered interference from the Cuban government, although it can be heard in various parts of the island.
His parents were Dr. Ramón Mas Cayado and Josefa del Carmen Aguilera Canosa, and his siblings were Nancy, Ramón, Ricardo, and Raúl Mas Canosa. He was married to Irma Santos-Espronceda and had three sons, Juan Carlos, Ramón José, and Jorge Mas-Santos, who are still active in the Cuban American National Foundation and MasTech.
Jorge Mas died on November 23, 1997, and was buried in the Woodlawn Park Mausoleum Cemetery (now Caballero Rivero Woodlawn North Park Cemetery and Mausoleum).

Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School
Named after a middle school in Miami-Dade County, Florida, which opened in August 2007.
Freedom Tower
In 1997, Mas Canosa acquired the Freedom Tower in Miami for $4.2 million.
Between 1962 and 1974, the Freedom Tower served as the Cuban Refugee Center, a crucial relief center for hundreds of thousands of Cuban refugees fleeing communism and political persecution. These immigrants would go on to transform Miami. After several decades of neglect, the Tower was rescued by Cuban-American community leaders seeking to honor the Cuban legacy in Miami and donated it to Miami Dade College in 2005. Currently (2025), restored, it was inaugurated as the Cuban Patriotic Museum.
