Hasta el cierre del mes pasado, 575.549 nacionales de la Isla entraron a EEUU desde diciembre de 2021.
En el mes de mayo llegaron 18.988 cubanos a EEUU, lo que representa un promedio de 612 cada día, según informó en su última actualización estadística la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección de Fronteras de EEUU (CBP en inglés).
El mes pasado se revirtió una ligera tendencia a la baja que se mantenía en las llegadas de cubanos a EEUU. Desde diciembre de 2023, cuando llegaron 25.050, los arribos comenzaron a disminuir hasta caer a 17.875 en abril. Este aumento puede que no se reedite en las llegadas del actual mes, ya que la Administración Biden concretó una medida a principios de junio que frenaría el número de llegadas de migrantes a EEUU por la frontera con México.
En mayo, los oficiales de la CBP atendieron a unos 111 menores cubanos no acompañados. En los últimos ocho meses (de octubre de 2023 a mayo de 2024), la CBP detuvo a 1.018 niños y adolescentes cubanos que viajaban sin ningún familiar que los representara legalmente.
EN LOS PRIMEROS CINCO MESES DE 2024
En los primeros cinco meses de 2024, los datos de la CBP reflejan la llegada de al menos 100.179 cubanos a EEUU, un promedio mensual de más de 20.000. De mantenerse esta tendencia, más de 240.000 cubanos podrían cruzar en 2024 las fronteras estadounidenses.
Con los de mayo, ascienden a 575.549 los nacionales de la Isla que han llegado a EEUU desde diciembre de 2021, cuando Nicaragua eliminó el requisito de visa para los cubanos y se inició la actual crisis migratoria. A partir de ese momento, los vuelos a Managua se convirtieron en el primer paso de la ruta migratoria que continúa por Honduras, Guatemala y México. A mediados de este mes, trascendió que más de 27.000 cubanos fueron interceptados en México entre enero y mayo de 2024.
Además de la ruta por Centroamérica los cubanos también emplean el parole humanitario. De los 100.500 cubanos aprobados hasta mayo para emigrar por esa vía a EEUU, ya han viajado 98.200. El mes pasado fue muy activo para los cubanos con parole: más de 7.000 entraron a ese país en mayo gracias a esta medida migratoria establecida por la Casa Blanca desde enero de 2023.
Los nacionales de la Isla siguen además con la vía marítima como una forma de llegar a Florida. La Guardia Costera de EEUU (USCG en inglés) continúa interceptando a balseros en el mar. Hace solo unas horas dio parte de un rescate practicado a dos cubanos en un cayo bahamés: “La tripulación del barco Manowar transfirió a dos migrantes cubanos a Bahamas, el viernes (21 de junio), luego de su rescate en Cayo Sal. Una tripulación aérea de la CBP vio a los migrantes varados agitando una bandera blanca en señal de socorro”.
