Las artes visuales han sido durante mucho tiempo una de las partes más fuertes de la asombrosa producción cultural de Cuba, pero es su arte contemporáneo el que fue elogiado internacionalmente como extremadamente poderoso, especialmente después del surgimiento de una fuerte generación de jóvenes creativos cubanos en la escena artística latinoamericana en la década de 1980. .
Hoy en día, muchos de los artistas cubanos contemporáneos se pueden encontrar en algunos de los principales museos y galerías de arte del mundo, y cuando Cuba y Estados Unidos han abierto un pequeño capítulo nuevo (Embajadas) en sus relaciones, creemos que el arte cubano podría ser la próxima gran novedad en el mundo del arte.

El arte contemporáneo cubano es muy rico. Desafortunadamente, por razones políticas y sociales, en ocasiones queda marginado en la escena del arte contemporáneo. En este artículo presentamos algunos artistas cubanos contemporáneos que realmente deberías conocer. Quizás sus nombres no te suenen, pero su arte y su práctica dejan boquiabiertos a muchos espectadores. Este suntuoso estudio del arte cubano revela el desarrollo de una identidad nacional distintiva y sirve como una narrativa ilustrada del colorido pasado y presente del país. LOS CARPINTEROS
Los Carpinteros es un colectivo de arte cubano de La Habana aclamado por la crítica y responsable de algunas de las obras más importantes creadas en Cuba en el siglo XXI.
El colectivo se formó inicialmente en 1991 como un trío, formado por los talentosos artistas Marco Castillo, Dagoberto Rodríguez y, hasta 2003, Alexandre Arrechea. Los Carpinteros son ampliamente elogiados por su asombrosa instalación artística que fusiona varios elementos de arquitectura, diseño y escultura de maneras inesperadas, a menudo humorísticas, pero siempre cautivadoras.
Sus instalaciones, esculturas y dibujos técnicos simulados, elegantes y cuidadosamente elaborados, se inspiran en el mobiliario y el diseño, negociando hábilmente el espacio entre lo práctico y lo inútil, con el uso inteligente del humor que enfatiza las contradicciones entre diferentes objetos.

TANIA BRUGERA
Tania Bruguera es la famosa artista de instalación y performance de Cuba, cuyo trabajo innovador se centra en las cuestiones de poder y control.
La performance más famosa de Bruguera es su obra de 1998 titulada The Burden of Guilt (El peso de la culpa), la desgarradora interpretación de la artista de una historia real cuando los indígenas cubanos juraron no comer nada más que tierra, en lugar de ser cautivos de los conquistadores españoles. .
En esta actuación extraordinaria y extremadamente atractiva, Bruguera permaneció desnuda durante 45 minutos, mientras consumía lágrimas (tierra mezclada con agua y sal), mientras un cordero sacrificado colgaba de su cuello, creando una carga tanto física como simbólica.
Además de ser una artista muy influyente, Tania Bruguera también es profesora de arte y fundadora y directora de Arte de Conducta (arte del comportamiento), el primer programa de estudios de performance en América Latina, organizado por el renombrado Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana.
RAMÓN ALEJANDRO
José Ramón Díaz Alejandro, que trabaja bajo el nombre de Ramón Alejandro, es un pintor cubano nacido en 1943. Aún pintando activamente, reside en Miami, FL, después de vivir exiliado en París.
Sus obras de arte representan principalmente paisajes y escenarios surrealistas empapados de colores vivos y significados ambiguos.
Aparte de esta temática, Ramón Alejandro también participó en la primera exposición de arte erótico de la historia, organizada en museos de Aarhus, Dinamarca y Lund, Suecia.
ALICIA LEAL
Alicia Leal es una de las artistas cubanas más importantes e influyentes, graduada de la Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Alejandro, la escuela de arte más antigua de Cuba, que rápidamente saltó a la fama como miembro de una joven generación de artistas cubanos en la década de 1980. .
Leal trabaja en el estudio-galería que comparte con su esposo, el renombrado pintor Juan Moreira, ubicado en El Vedado, distrito comercial central y barrio urbano de La Habana, pero sus fascinantes murales e instalaciones públicas se pueden encontrar por toda la ciudad.
Sus obras de perspectivas planas, escenas intrincadas y estructuras narrativas se centran en la mujer y su papel como proveedora de refugio, y tienen una cierta frescura que recuerda al arte popular.

The visual arts have long been one of the strongest parts of Cuba’s amazing cultural output, but it is its contemporary art that became praised internationally as extremely powerful, especially after the emergence of Cuba’s strong generation of young creatives on Latin American art scene in the 1980s.
Today, many of the contemporary Cuban artists can be found rostered by some of the world’s premium museums and art galleries, and now that Cuba and the United States, have opened a little new chapter (Embassies) in their relations, we think that Cuban art might just be the next big thing in the art world.
The following list should be taken as a cross section of what we feel is the best in Cuban contemporary art today. It is by no means exhaustive, and as you will see, there is little to cohere the artists featured on the list, apart from their shared nationality.
Cuban contemporary art is very rich. Unfortunately, due to political and societal reasons, sometimes it is marginalized on contemporary art scene. In this article, we present some Cuban contemporary artists you should really know. Maybe their names are not familiar with you, but their art and their practice leave many spectators speechless. Los Carpinteros (The Carpenters) is a critically acclaimed Cuban art collective from Havana which is responsible for some of the most important work created in Cuba in the 21st century.
The collective was initially formed in 1991 as a trio, consisting of multi-talented artists Marco Castillo, Dagoberto Rodríguez, and, until 2003, Alexandre Arrechea. Los Carpinteros are widely praised for their astonishing installation art that merges together various elements of architecture, design, and sculpture in unexpected, often humorous, but always captivating ways.
Their elegant and carefully crafted installations, sculptures and mock technical drawings, draw inspiration from furniture and design, cleverly negotiating the space between the practical and the useless, with the intelligent use of humor which emphasizes contradictions between different objects.
Los Carpinteros have been increasingly popular during the last decade, and they have exhibited their amusing artworks in Cuba, and across Europe and North America.
TANIA BRUGERA
Tania Bruguera is the famous installation and performance artist from Cuba, whose groundbreaking work is focused on the issues of power and control.
Bruguera’s most famous performance piece is her 1998 work titled The Burden of Guilt (El peso de la culpa), the artist’s harrowing take on a true story when indigenous Cuban people vowed to eat nothing but dirt, rather than be the captives of the Spanish conquistadors.
In this extraordinary and extremely engaging performance, Bruguera stood naked for 45 minutes, as she consumed tears (soil mixed with water and salt), while a butchered lamb hanged from her neck, creating both a physical and symbolic burden.
Apart from being a highly influential artist, Tania Bruguera is also an art teacher and a founder and director of Arte de Conducta (behavior art), the first performance studies program in Latin America, which is hosted by the renowned Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana.
RAMON ALEJANDRO
José Ramón Díaz Alejandro, working under the name Ramón Alejandro, is a Cuban painter born in 1943. Still painting actively, he is based in Miami, FL, after living in exile in Paris.
His artworks mostly depict landscapes and surreal sceneries soaked in vivid colors and ambiguous meanings.
Aside from this thematic, however, Ramón Alejandro was also featured in the first exhibition of erotic art ever, hosted by museums in Aarhus, Denmark and Lund, Sweden.

Alicia Leal is one of the most important and highly influential Cuban artists, a graduate of the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts, the oldest art school in Cuba, who quickly came to prominence as a member of a young generation of Cuban artists in the 1980’s.
Leal works from studio-gallery she shares with her husband, renowned painter Juan Moreira, which is located in El Vedado, central business district and urban neighborhood in Havana, but her mesmerizing murals and public installations can be found all around the city.
Her works of flat perspectives, intricate scenes and narrative structures are centered around woman and her role in providing refuge, and they have a certain freshness to them which is reminiscent of folk art.
Intensely subjective and symbolic, these extraordinary pieces explore the subconscious and dreams, successfully establishing an instant magnetic relationship with their viewers.
