MATIAS PÉREZ, “EL REY DE LAS MARQUESINAS” QUE VOLÓ UN GLOBO SIN DEJAR RASTRO. PHOTOS.

Matías Pérez fue un residente cubano de origen portugués que inició un negocio de marquesinas en La Habana en el siglo XIX. Quedó fascinado con la popularidad cada vez mayor de los globos aerostáticos y se convirtió en piloto de globos, ascendiendo al menos tres veces antes de desaparecer mientras intentaba un ascenso en globo desde el Campo de Marte de La Habana el 28 de junio de 1856.

Matías Pérez, en aquella época era conocido como el “rey de las marquesinas”. Pero se dice que Pérez siempre tuvo interés por la aeronáutica. Antes de comprar un globo al piloto francés Eugène Godard, con quien mantenía una relación amistosa, los dos hombres habían emprendido vuelo juntos desde La Habana el 21 de mayo de 1856.


VOLO COMO MATIAS PEREZ
Hay un refran en el Foklore cubano que nos deja ver todo un suceso que ocurrió en la vida real.. dicha frase es “Voló como Matias Pérez”.

Leyendo en una revista Cuba Ilustrada, de 1912, con hojas amarillas por el tiempo, esta dice que “pese a no estar más adelantada la Aerostación en el mundo, se habían lanzado intrépidamente a los aires, hombres como Blinó y Matías Pérez, en quienes habían de encontrar ejemplos de valor y decisión algunos aviadores”.

El escritor Álvaro de la Iglesia, conocido por sus artículos de costumbres, dijo de ellos: “Sin elementos, sin el aliciente siquiera de una recompensa, sin más estímulo que el aplauso y la gloria de realizar una gran aventura, esos aeronautas de afición dejaron bien puesto el pabellón cubano o mejor dicho, el nombre cubano”.

EXCURSION AEROSTATICA EN LA HABANA.

En el mismo artículo de la revista Cuba Ilustrada se destaca que cuando a Matías Pérez lo reconocían por sus hazañas aéreas, Cuba era una colonia sometida al gobierno de Don Francisco Dionisio Vives.

Según dijo Álvaro de la Iglesia, “los globos no se conocieron en Cuba hasta 1796” y añadió que “la primera excursión aerostática se efectuó en La Habana el 19 de marzo de 1828, como uno de los más atrayentes números del programa de festejos para solemnizar la inauguración del Templete de la Plaza de Armas”.

En el relato se dice además que: “Aquellas fiestas duraron desde el 18 al 21 y el héroe del 19 fue un aeronauta francés, Robertson, quien por la tarde se elevó en un globo desde la misma Plaza de Armas”, para que pudiera presenciar el ascenso la primera autoridad de la Isla.

MATIAS PEREZ Y EL GLOBO VILLA DE PARIS.

A propósito de las fiestas celebradas en el sitio conocido como El Templete, estas empezaron con una misa solemne que ofició el Obispo Don Juan Díaz de Espada, quien pronunció una oración en presencia del general Vives.

De los tres cuadros que hay en El Templete, uno reproduce esta escena. A Matías Pérez se le conoció como el ‘Rey de los Toldistas’, por su habilidad en esa industria. Él hizo un globo, lleno de valentía y no engañó al público anunciando ascensos sin realizarlos.

Su primer vuelo con su globo “Villa de Paris” fue el 12 de junio de 1856. Las condiciones atmosféricas eran buenas y partió desde lo que es hoy Parque de la Fraternidad de La Habana.

Como resultó un vuelo exitoso, diecisiete días después, el 29 de junio, repitió el evento ante una multitud de habaneros que se reunió para verlo despegar en su segunda y última aventura.

Según periódicos de la época, el viento era demasiado fuerte para el momento y el vuelo se retrasó. Finalmente con la caída de la tarde alrededor de las 7 de la noche tomó la desafortunada decisión de elevarse hacia los cielos y nunca más fue visto.

El globo ascendió rápidamente y con los aires cálidos se movió a la deriva tomando rumbo hacia el norte, sobre el estrecho de la Florida. Se cuenta que las últimas personas que lo vieron fueron unos pescadores por el Torreón de la Chorrera.

Del intrépido aeronauta no queda más que el desvanecido recuerdo y el dicho: ¡Voló como Matías Pérez!.

Además de ser una artista muy influyente, Tania Bruguera también es profesora de arte y fundadora y directora de Arte de Conducta (arte del comportamiento), el primer programa de estudios de performance en América Latina, organizado por el renombrado Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana.

RAMÓN ALEJANDRO
José Ramón Díaz Alejandro, que trabaja bajo el nombre de Ramón Alejandro, es un pintor cubano nacido en 1943. Aún pintando activamente, reside en Miami, FL, después de vivir exiliado en París.

Sus obras de arte representan principalmente paisajes y escenarios surrealistas empapados de colores vivos y significados ambiguos.

Aparte de esta temática, Ramón Alejandro también participó en la primera exposición de arte erótico de la historia, organizada en museos de Aarhus, Dinamarca y Lund, Suecia.

ALICIA LEAL
Alicia Leal es una de las artistas cubanas más importantes e influyentes, graduada de la Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Alejandro, la escuela de arte más antigua de Cuba, que rápidamente saltó a la fama como miembro de una joven generación de artistas cubanos en la década de 1980. .

Leal trabaja en el estudio-galería que comparte con su esposo, el renombrado pintor Juan Moreira, ubicado en El Vedado, distrito comercial central y barrio urbano de La Habana, pero sus fascinantes murales e instalaciones públicas se pueden encontrar por toda la ciudad.

Sus obras de perspectivas planas, escenas intrincadas y estructuras narrativas se centran en la mujer y su papel como proveedora de refugio, y tienen una cierta frescura que recuerda al arte popular.

The visual arts have long been one of the strongest parts of Cuba’s amazing cultural output, but it is its contemporary art that became praised internationally as extremely powerful, especially after the emergence of Cuba’s strong generation of young creatives on Latin American art scene in the 1980s.

Today, many of the contemporary Cuban artists can be found rostered by some of the world’s premium museums and art galleries, and now that Cuba and the United States, have opened a little new chapter (Embassies) in their relations, we think that Cuban art might just be the next big thing in the art world.

The following list should be taken as a cross section of what we feel is the best in Cuban contemporary art today. It is by no means exhaustive, and as you will see, there is little to cohere the artists featured on the list, apart from their shared nationality.

Cuban contemporary art is very rich. Unfortunately, due to political and societal reasons, sometimes it is marginalized on contemporary art scene. In this article, we present some Cuban contemporary artists you should really know. Maybe their names are not familiar with you, but their art and their practice leave many spectators speechless. Cuba’s artistic tradition is as rich as its history, though its treasures are rarely appreciated outside of the country.

LOS CARPINTEROS
Los Carpinteros (The Carpenters) is a critically acclaimed Cuban art collective from Havana which is responsible for some of the most important work created in Cuba in the 21st century.

The collective was initially formed in 1991 as a trio, consisting of multi-talented artists Marco Castillo, Dagoberto Rodríguez, and, until 2003, Alexandre Arrechea. Los Carpinteros are widely praised for their astonishing installation art that merges together various elements of architecture, design, and sculpture in unexpected, often humorous, but always captivating ways.

Their elegant and carefully crafted installations, sculptures and mock technical drawings, draw inspiration from furniture and design, cleverly negotiating the space between the practical and the useless, with the intelligent use of humor which emphasizes contradictions between different objects.

Los Carpinteros have been increasingly popular during the last decade, and they have exhibited their amusing artworks in Cuba, and across Europe and North America.

TANIA BRUGERA
Tania Bruguera is the famous installation and performance artist from Cuba, whose groundbreaking work is focused on the issues of power and control.

Bruguera’s most famous performance piece is her 1998 work titled The Burden of Guilt (El peso de la culpa), the artist’s harrowing take on a true story when indigenous Cuban people vowed to eat nothing but dirt, rather than be the captives of the Spanish conquistadors.

In this extraordinary and extremely engaging performance, Bruguera stood naked for 45 minutes, as she consumed tears (soil mixed with water and salt), while a butchered lamb hanged from her neck, creating both a physical and symbolic burden.

Apart from being a highly influential artist, Tania Bruguera is also an art teacher and a founder and director of Arte de Conducta (behavior art), the first performance studies program in Latin America, which is hosted by the renowned Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana.

RAMON ALEJANDRO
José Ramón Díaz Alejandro, working under the name Ramón Alejandro, is a Cuban painter born in 1943. Still painting actively, he is based in Miami, FL, after living in exile in Paris.

His artworks mostly depict landscapes and surreal sceneries soaked in vivid colors and ambiguous meanings.

Aside from this thematic, however, Ramón Alejandro was also featured in the first exhibition of erotic art ever, hosted by museums in Aarhus, Denmark and Lund, Sweden.
