Olga Guillot fue una destacada cantante conocida como la “Reina del Bolero”. Era oriunda de la ciudad cubana de Santiago.
Guillot y su familia se mudaron a La Habana, Cuba cuando ella era una niña pequeña. Cuando era adolescente, ella y su hermana, Ana Luisa, se presentaban como dúo, llamadas “Dúo Hermanitas Guillot”.
Recién en 1945 se descubriría su talento como cantante de boleros, cuando Facundo Rivero, un hombre influyente en la industria musical cubana de la época, la escuchó cantar por primera vez y la ayudó a debutar como cantante profesional, en un famoso club nocturno de La Habana. Poco tiempo después, Guillot conoció a Miguelito Valdés, quien la llevó a la ciudad de Nueva York, donde Guillot pudo grabar su primer disco, con el sello Decca.

Guillot viajó a México en 1948. Allí se consolidó como cantante y actriz internacional, participando en varias películas y realizando su segundo disco. En México, Guillot comenzó a gozar de mucha popularidad por primera vez en su carrera.
En 1954, grabó su canción “Mienteme” (“Miénteme”), que se convirtió en un éxito en América Latina y le valió tres premios consecutivos en Cuba como la mejor cantante femenina de Cuba.
1958 resultó ser un año importante para Guillot, ya que realizó una gira por Europa por primera vez, incluidas paradas en Italia, Francia, España y Alemania. Cantó junto a la igualmente legendaria Édith Piaf durante un concierto en Cannes.

Olga Guillot mantuvo una casa en Cuba mientras viajaba por el mundo con su música, además de su casa en México. Pero Guillot se opuso al gobierno de Fidel Castro y, en 1961, decidió abandonar definitivamente Cuba y establecerse en Venezuela. No mucho después de eso, se fue de Venezuela, convirtiendo a México en su único país de residencia permanente.
Mientras tanto, siguió de gira por el mundo, cantando en lugares como Israel, Japón, Hong Kong y muchos otros. En 1963, Guillot recibió el premio Palma de Oro como “mejor cantante de boleros de América Latina”. Recibió el premio en Hollywood, California. Guillot cantó en 1964 en el famoso Carnegie Hall de Nueva York y se convirtió en el primer artista latino en cantar allí.
Guillot continuó de gira durante los siguientes cuarenta años, lanzó más de cincuenta álbumes y ganó numerosos premios por su actividad en el mundo de la música. Era muy amiga de Celia Cruz, a quien solía referirse como “(su) hermana”. Cuando Cruz murió de cáncer, Guillot estaba muy afligida por la pérdida de su amigo cercano y compatriota. Fue madrina del icónico cantante José José.
Sus discos y su música están prohibidos en Cuba. Guillot fue un crítico silencioso pero fuerte de Castro y sus políticas hacia los residentes cubanos. Guillot vivía principalmente en México y tenía otra casa en Miami Beach, Florida.
El 12 de julio de 2010 murió de un infarto a la edad de 87 años en la ciudad de Miami Beach. Le sobrevive una hija, Olga Maria Touzet-Guillot, nacida de su relación con el pianista y compositor René Touzet.
Olga Guillot siempre estará en el corazón de Cuba.

Olga Guillot was an outstanding singer who was known as the “queen of bolero”. She was a native of the Cuban city of Santiago.
Guillot and her family moved to Havana, Cuba when she was a small child. As a teenager, she and her sister, Ana Luisa, performed as a duo, named the “Duo Hermanitas Guillot”.
It wasn’t until 1945 that her talent as a bolero singer would be discovered, when Facundo Rivero, an influential man in the Cuban music industry of the era, heard her sing for the first time and helped her make her professional singing debut, at a famous Havana night club. Soon after, Guillot met Miguelito Valdés, who took her to New York City, where Guillot was able to record her first album, with the Decca label.

Guillot traveled to Mexico in 1948. There, she established herself as an international singer and actress, participating in various films and making her second album. In Mexico, Guillot began to enjoy much popularity for the first time in her career.
In 1954, she recorded her song “Mienteme” (“Lie to Me”), which became a hit across Latin America, and earned her three consecutive awards back home in Cuba as Cuba’s best female singer.
1958 proved to be an important year for Guillot, as she toured Europe for the first time, including stops in Italy, France, Spain, and Germany. She sang alongside the equally legendary Édith Piaf during a concert held in Cannes.
OLGA GUILLOT LEAVES CUBA
Olga Guillot kept a house in Cuba as she traveled around the world with her music, apart from her house in Mexico. But Guillot opposed Fidel Castro’s government, and, in 1961, she decided to leave Cuba for good and establish herself in Venezuela. Not long after that, she left Venezuela, making Mexico her only permanent residence country.
Meanwhile, she kept touring around the world, singing in places such as Israel, Japan, Hong Kong, and many others. In 1963, Guillot was given the Golden Palm award as “best bolero singer of Latin America”. She received the award in Hollywood, California. Guillot sang in 1964 at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall becoming the first Latin artist to sing there.
Guillot continued on touring for the next forty years, releasing over fifty albums and winning numerous awards for her activity in the music world. She was very good friends with Celia Cruz, to whom she often referred to as “(her) sister”. When Cruz died from cancer, Guillot was very bereaved over the loss of her close friend and compatriot. She was the godmother of the iconic singer José José.
Her albums and music are prohibited in Cuba. Guillot was a quiet but strong critic of Castro and his policies towards Cuban residents. Guillot lived mainly in Mexico and had another home in Miami Beach, Florida.
On July 12, 2010, she died of infarction at the age of 87 in the city of Miami Beach. She is survived by one daughter, Olga Maria Touzet-Guillot, born from her relationship with pianist and composer, René Touzet.
