Libertad Lamarque fue una actriz y cantante mexicano-argentina, uno de los íconos de la Edad de Oro del cine argentino y mexicano. Alcanzó la fama en toda América Latina y se hizo conocida como “La Novia de América”. Al momento de su muerte en 2000, había aparecido en 65 películas (21 filmadas en Argentina, 45 en México y una en España) y seis telenovelas, había grabado más de 800 canciones y había realizado innumerables apariciones teatrales.

Libertad Lamarque arribó a La Habana el 5 de enero de 1946 y aunque el año recién comenzaba, muchos periodistas y admiradores de la gran dama argentina del tango se atrevieron a asegurar que sería aquel el acontecimiento artístico de la temporada. No se equivocaron.
Llegó acompañada del esposo, Alfredo Malerba, quien era compositor y pianista, y desde que el avión tocó pista no cesaron las muestras de afecto del pueblo capitalino, que la conocía a través de sus películas.

El recibimiento fue de tal magnitud que el auto descapotable en que hizo el recorrido saludando a los espectadores interrumpió el tráfico de la ciudad más de una vez, dando oportunidades para que los fotógrafos tomaran instantáneas de un momento que para la artista fue inolvidable.
Libertad escribiría después, en su Autobiografía, que “durante el mes que permanecimos en La Habana pasamos de un agasajo a otro; fueron días de verdaderas fiestas que no hemos olvidado.”
Debutó en el teatro América de la Calzada de Galiano, el 7 de enero. Presentó un repertorio variado, con predominio de la música rioplatense, pero cerró con la interpretación de la canción Facundo, del cubano Eliseo Grenet, recibida con prolongada ovación.
Las funciones en el teatro América eran diarias y dobles, y la última, el domingo 20 de enero, fue nada menos que triple, es decir, ¡que hubo tres funciones ese día! A la fiebre de tangos también contribuyeron las casas disqueras, que vendieron mucho por aquellas fechas, pues el género siempre ha tenido aceptación entre los cubanos.
EL REGRESO A CUBA
Diez años después de aquella primera visita, regresó Libertad a los predios artísticos nacionales. Llegó con el inicio del mes de agosto de 1956, para realizar presentaciones por dos semanas. Sumaba ahora más títulos a su abundantísima carrera cinematográfica, en la que descollaban cintas como Madreselva, El alma del bandoneón, En el viejo Buenos Aires, Gran Casino, Te sigo esperando, Soledad y muchas más, filmadas en Argentina y en México.
En 1956 contaba 47 años y era, según el calendario, una mujer en su madurez, aunque conservaba su esplendor artístico y físico, lo cual llamaba la atención de hombres y mujeres, sobre todo de estas últimas, curiosas por conocer la fórmula que permitía a Libertad permanecer ciertamente joven.
Activa hasta muy avanzada edad, la actriz –nacida en la ciudad de Rosario, en 1909– murió en México a los 92 años, demostrando que también tuvo la dicha de hallar la fórmula de la longevidad.
En Cuba nunca olvidaremos a la Gran Dama de America Libertad Lamarque.

Libertad Lamarque arrived in Havana on January 5, 1946, and although the year had just begun, many journalists and admirers of the great Argentine lady of tango dared to assure that it would be the artistic event of the season. They were not wrong.
