Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso conocida como Celia Cruz fue una cantante cubanoamericana y una de las artistas latinas más populares del siglo XX. Cruz saltó a la fama en Cuba durante la década de 1950 como cantante de guarachas, ganándose el apodo de “La Guarachera de Cuba” y “La Reina de Cuba”.
En las siguientes décadas, se hizo conocida internacionalmente como la “Reina de la Salsa” debido a sus contribuciones a la música latina en los Estados Unidos.
Celia Cruz nació el 21 de octubre de 1925, en la calle Serrano 47 del barrio Santos Suárez de La Habana, Cuba. Su padre, Simón Cruz, era fogonero ferroviario, y su madre, Catalina Alfonso Ramos, ama de casa que cuidaba de una familia extensa. Celia era una de las mayores entre catorce niños, incluidos sus tres hermanos, Dolores, Gladys y Bárbaro, y solía cantar canciones de cuna para dormirlos.
Nacida en La Habana, y fallecida en Nueva Jersey (Estados Unidos), Cruz en general incorporaba en sus interpretaciones las influencias de la tribu Yoruba, antigua etnia nigeriana, como muestra de su orgullo africano.
LAS RAICES AFRICANAS DE NUESTRA CELIA CRUZ
Las raíces africanas de la legendaria cantante cubana Celia Cruz (1925-2003) se remontan hasta la comunidad de Balanta, en Guinea Bissau, una de las mayores etnias que también ha dotado de una lengua a ese país, reveló en noticias publicadas la empresa African Ancestry, dedicada a la búsqueda ancestral a través del ADN.

African Ancestry, fundada en 2003 y con sede en Washington DC, utilizó una prueba de ascendencia para rastrear la línea materna de Cruz hasta la comunidad Balanta del citado país africano y así poder honrarla, de acuerdo con un comunicado. “Para nosotros es un momento emocionante, porque Celia Cruz adoptó plenamente su herencia africana en su vida y su música”, expresó Gina Paige, presidenta y cofundadora de African Ancestry.
“Ahora sabemos que ella pertenece a la comunidad Balanta (conocida como “aquellos que resisten”) y nos enorgullece celebrar su legado de esta manera sin precedentes”, afirmó Paige.
Como parte de la campaña “Remember Who You Are” (Recuerda quién eres), de esta empresa, Celia Cody, sobrina y tocaya de Cruz, ofreció su ADN a través de un simple hisopado en la mejilla, explica el comunicado.
El resultado del test los llevó a la etnia Balanta, que actualmente representa el 30 % de la población de Guinea Bissau que honra a la descendencia de nuestra Celia Cruz.

EL LEGADO Y HONORES TRIBUTADOS A CELIA CRUZ
El legado de Cruz ha sido honrado desde años antes de su muerte, incluyendo una estrella en el Paseo de la Fama de Hollywood (1987), el nombre del asteroide 5212 Celiacruz (1989), los Premios a la Excelencia en los Premios Lo Nuestro de 1990, y Celia Cruz Way en Miami (1991). También fue reconocida con una estrella en el Boulevard Amador Bendayán en Caracas, Venezuela, y una figura en el Museo de Cera de Hollywood. Además, Cruz recibió tres doctorados Honoris Causa de tres universidades de Estados Unidos: la Universidad de Yale, la Universidad Internacional de Florida y la Universidad de Miami. También fue incluida en el Salón de la Fama de la Música Latina Internacional en 1999. Ese mismo año, recibió el premio ASCAP Latin Heritage Award convirtiéndose en la primera en recibir el galardón.
A través de una formidable ética de trabajo, Cruz llegó a lo más alto de su género. En febrero de 2004, su último álbum, ‘Regalo del Alma’, ganó un premio póstumo en los Premios Lo Nuestro al mejor lanzamiento de salsa del año. En diciembre de 2005 se anunció que un musical llamado ¡Azúcar! abriría en Tenerife antes de recorrer el mundo. El nombre proviene del conocido eslogan de Cruz de “¡Azúcar!” (“¡Azúcar!”).
En 2003, se abrió una escuela de música en el Bronx, llamada Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music. El 4 de Junio de 2004, la gran comunidad cubanoamericana de Union City, Nueva Jersey, anunció su Desfile anual del Día Cubano al dedicar su nuevo Parque Celia Cruz (también conocido como Celia Cruz Plaza), que cuenta con una estrella en la acera en su honor, en Calle 31 y Avenida Bergenline. Hay otras cuatro dedicatorias similares a Cruz en todo el mundo. La estrella de Cruz se ha expandido al “Paseo de la Fama” de Union City, ya que cada primavera se agregan nuevas estrellas de mármol para honrar a personalidades latinas del entretenimiento y los medios.

El 18 de mayo de 2005, el Museo Nacional de Historia Estadounidense, administrado por la Institución Smithsonian y ubicado en Washington, D.C., inauguró “¡Azúcar!”, Una exhibición que celebra la vida y la música de Celia Cruz. La exhibición destaca momentos importantes en la vida y carrera de Cruz a través de fotografías, documentos personales, vestuario, videos y música. Su biografía ‘Celia: Mi vida’ también fue publicada en 2005, basada en más de 500 horas de entrevistas con la periodista mexicana Ana Cristina Reymundo. Desde el 26 de septiembre de 2007 hasta el 25 de mayo de 2008, Celia, un musical basado en la vida de Celia Cruz, se presentó en el recinto del Off-Broadway New World Stages. El espectáculo ganó cuatro premios HOLA 2008 de la Organización Hispana de Actores Latinos.
El 16 de marzo de 2011, Celia Cruz fue honrada por el Servicio Postal de los Estados Unidos con un sello postal conmemorativo. El sello de Cruz fue uno de un grupo de cinco sellos que honran a los grandes de la música latina, que también incluyen a Selena, Tito Puente, Carmen Miranda y Carlos Gardel. El Museo Nacional de Historia Estadounidense del Smithsonian colaboró con el fotógrafo Robert Weingarten para crear un retrato basado en objetos de Celia Cruz con artefactos en el museo. En 2018, se inauguró un monumento a Celia Cruz en el Cuban Heritage Park en Hialeah, Florida. En 2019, la poeta chileno-estadounidense Marjorie Agosin creó una obra de teatro de música de cámara titulada “Las Magníficas”, basada en la vida de Celia Cruz y la cantautora chilena Violeta Parra.
El 2 de junio de 2021, la ciudad de Nueva York honró a Celia Cruz al nombrar conjuntamente la intersección de Reservoir Avenue y East 195th Street en la sección Kingsbridge Heights del Bronx, cerca de la High School que lleva el nombre en su honor, “Celia Cruz Way “.
Cruz, todo un icono de la música latina y considerada “la reina de la salsa”, siempre soño con regresar a su patria libre, fue una de las cantantes más populares de la industria.
En 1960, un año después del triunfo encabezado por Fidel Castro, Celia Cruz abandonó Cuba aprovechando una salida para actuar en México con la “Sonora Matancera” -orquesta de la que era voz solista-, se exilió en Estados Unidos, y nunca volvió a su isla esperando la liberación de esa isla que tanto amó.

Cruz herself rose to fame in Cuba during the 1950s as a guaracha singer, earning the nickname “La Guarachera de Cuba” and “La Reina de Cuba.”
In the following decades, she also became known internationally as the “Queen of Salsa” due to her contributions to Latin music in the United States.
Celia Cruz was born on October 21, 1925, on 47 Serrano Street in the Santos Suárez neighborhood of Havana, Cuba. Her father, Simón Cruz, was a railway fireman, and her mother, Catalina Alfonso Ramos, a homemaker who cared for an extended family. Celia was one of the oldest of fourteen children, including her three siblings, Dolores, Gladys, and Bárbaro, and she used to sing lullabies to put them to sleep.
Born in Havana, and died in New Jersey (United States), Cruz in general incorporated into her interpretations the influences of the Yoruba tribe, Guinea Bissau, and Nigerian, as a sign of her African pride in her.
THE AFRICAN ROOTS OF OUR CELIA CRUZ
The African roots of the legendary Cuban singer Celia Cruz (1925-2003) go back to the Balanta community, in Guinea Bissau, one of the largest ethnic groups that have also endowed that country with a language, revealed in published news the African company Ancestry, dedicated to the ancestral search through DNA.

African Ancestry, founded in 2003 and based in Washington DC, used an ancestry test to trace Cruz’s maternal line to the Balanta community in that African country and thus be able to honor her, according to a statement. “This is an exciting time for us because Celia Cruz fully embraced her African heritage in her life and her music,” said Gina Paige, President, and Co-founder of African Ancestry.
“We now know that she belongs to the Balanta community (known as ‘those who resist’) and we are proud to celebrate her legacy in this unprecedented way,” said Paige.
As part of the company’s “Remember Who You Are” campaign, Celia Cody, Cruz’s niece, and namesake, offered her DNA through a simple cheek swab, the statement explains.
The result of the test led them to the Balanta ethnic group, which currently represents 30% of the population of Guinea Bissau that honors the offspring of our Celia Cruz.
THE LEGACY AND HONORS TAXED TO CELIA CRUZ
Cruz’s legacy has been honored for years before his death, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1987), the name of asteroid 5212 Celiacruz (1989), the Awards of Excellence at the Premios Lo Nuestro de 1990, and Celia Cruz Way in Miami (1991). In 2003, a music school was opened in the Bronx, called Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music. On June 4, 2004, the greater Cuban-American community of Union City, New Jersey, announced its annual Cuban Day Parade by dedicating its new Celia Cruz Park (also known as Celia Cruz Plaza), which features a star on the sidewalk in his honor, on Calle 31 and Avenida Bergenline.
