Los Zafiros (The Sapphires) was a Cuban close-harmony vocal group working from 1962 until 1976. The group was part of the filín (feeling) movement, inspired by American doo-wop groups such as The Platters.
THE ZAFIROS’s entire music creativity was a fusion of Cuban genres, such as the bolero, with doo-wop, ballads, R&B, calypso, Bossa Nova, and early rock and roll. Los Zafiros were formed in Cayo Hueso, Havana in 1962, by Miguel Ángel Cancio Soria, with the following members:

ARTISTIC CAREER
The group was highly successful from the start, with high record sales and popular tours at home and abroad.
However, some members of the group were self-destructive and undisciplined, with heavy drinking and other activities. Two died young: Ignacio died in 1981 at the age of 37 from a brain hemorrhage. Kike died in 1983 from cirrhosis of the liver. El Chino, beset by vision, speech, and drinking problems, lived alone in Cayo Hueso until his death on 8 August 1995 at age 56. Today only one member is alive, Miguel Cancio, who lives in Miami, and also Oscar Aguirre the first guitar player.
“LOS ZAFIROS” FUTURE
Manuel Galbán and his wife lived in the same house in Havana as in the heyday of Los Zafiros, until he died of cardiac arrest on July 7, 2011. He was active on the Cuban music scene through his work in The Buena Vista Social Club and as a recording artist for World Circuit records. In 2001, World Circuit arranged a special recording session for Galbán and Cancio at EGREM. Along with Orlando Lopez (Cachaito), Roberto Garcia, and Bernardo Garcia (Chori), Cancio and Galbán recorded two of their old songs. This session plays a central role in the film and marks the first time that Galbán and Cancio recorded together in over thirty years.
In 1987 a revival group is known as ‘Los Nuevos Zafiros’ was formed, but they never achieved the fame that the originals had.

The song, “He Venido”, sung by them, in 2011 took the spotlight as a theme song from the television series Breaking Bad. The central scene of Episode 306 contains material filmed in the yard of a piece of the destruction conveyor by the compaction of the recreational vehicle (RV) used by Walt and Jesse to cook their initial batches of methamphetamine. CARRERA ARTÍSTICA
El grupo tuvo un gran éxito desde el principio, con un récord de ventas y giras populares en el país y en el extranjero.
Sin embargo, algunos miembros del grupo eran autodestructivos e indisciplinados, bebían en exceso y realizaban otras actividades. Dos murieron jóvenes: Ignacio murió en 1981 a los 37 años de una hemorragia cerebral. Kike murió en 1983 de cirrosis hepática. El Chino, acosado por problemas de visión, habla y bebida, vivió solo en Cayo Hueso hasta su muerte el 8 de agosto de 1995 a los 56 años. Hoy solo está vivo un miembro, Miguel Cancio, que vive en Miami, y también Oscar Aguirre el primero guitarrista.
FUTURO DE “LOS ZAFIROS”
Manuel Galbán y su esposa vivieron en la misma casa en La Habana que en el apogeo de Los Zafiros, hasta que murió de un paro cardíaco el 7 de julio de 2011. Participó activamente en la escena musical cubana a través de su trabajo en The Buena Vista Social Club y como artista de grabación de World Circuit Records. En 2001, World Circuit organizó una sesión especial de grabación para Galbán y Cancio en EGREM. Junto a Orlando López (Cachaito), Roberto García y Bernardo García (Chori), Cancio y Galbán grabaron dos de sus viejas canciones. Esta sesión juega un papel central en la película y marca la primera vez que Galbán y Cancio graban juntos en más de treinta años.

En 1987 se formó un grupo de resurgimiento conocido como ‘Los Nuevos Zafiros’, pero nunca alcanzaron la fama que tenían los originales.

La canción, “He Venido”, cantada por ellos, en 2011 tomó el centro de atención como tema principal de la serie de televisión Breaking Bad.
