CHARACTERS OF MY CUBA: “MUSTACHE E ‘GATO”, WAS A GREAT GUY FROM HAVANA.
Many eccentric “characters” existed in Havana who, like architecture and history, formed part of the urban landscape at some point. Today, only a few are remembered, such is the case of the one they called Bigote e’Gato.
Manuel “Bigote e’ Gato” Pérez Rodríguez, was a Spanish ‘aplatanado’ in Cuba who owned a bar there in the old Luyano neighborhood, but who drew attention for his quirky appearance and for the long mustaches he had, which he delighted in twist their ends with the tips of your fingers until they are turned upwards as if they were bicycle handlebars.
Friend of the Knight of Paris and other characters such as the Marchioness, Juan Charrasqueao, the Andarín Carvajal, who also remember Havanans, Manuel Pérez Rodríguez arrived in Havana, very young and from Asturias. Mustache E’Gato said that ‘Christopher Columbus’ (the Spanish Ship) brought him to Cuba, of course, the ship named that way, characterizing his own jokes. Since he arrived, he brought the Asturian Center card with him in his pocket, a decision that would then open the way for him.
MEET CUBA FIRST…
He opened his bar tertulia exactly on March 1, 1947, at 308 Teniente Rey Street between Aguacate and Compostela, in Old Havana and whose propaganda said: “Get to know Cuba first, visit Bigote E’Gato later.” He was also the inventor of exclusive cocktails and rare tropical drinks: “Atila in front of Rome”, “Wait for me in Heaven” and “Cuba en Llamas”, and of course, the so-called “Mustache’e Gato”.
He worked at an inn for 20 cents a day, later at the Bar Hatuey de Concha y Cristina. He was able to open his bar thanks to his savings and some borrowed money. They say that the beret he used was the same one he brought from Asturias. He always helped those who had less than him and among the advertisements of his business was the one that for a long time identified it as his motto: “A little piece of our motherland with all its products, a Cuban palm tree with all its customs.”
Mustache E’Gato became the president of the Nightlife Club, whose only requirement to join it was to be between 18 and 100 years old, to be in the bar between 12 at night and 6 in the morning. and of course, count on the joy and disposition for that association. In this club, at 3 in the morning, a Creole meal was offered: a fiery tail, a stewed tongue, and sweet Bomba fruit with cheese.
In 1958 he presided over the ‘Tribunal de Los Locos’, a humorous television program, which made him win more clients. He was champion of a fotingo (carros viejos) hoting race with his 1926 Chevrolet, which he advertised profusely at his bar and with which he also walked on Sundays along the Malecón accompanied by beautiful women, especially mulattos, for whom he had a special predilection.
Mustache e ‘Gato always distinguished himself by his mustache and long hair and the round red beret on his head, always standing out for his good humor, a contagious laugh, and his gentleness. A proof of his acuity is his phrase: “In matters of love, men are the ones who spend the most work, because it is not the same to open a book than to take the point out of a pencil.”
“Bigote E’ Gato” or Manuel Pérez, died on July 11, 2003, in the Old Havana.
Like other popular Cuban characters, Bigote e’Gato was the source of inspiration for two very popular songs, composed by Jesús Guerra and they were the guarachas “El disgusto de Bigote” and “Bigote Gato es un gran tema”, the latter performed by Sonora Matancera with its singer Daniel Santos and who said:
Mustache and cat is a great guy
who lives there by the Luyanó
and the rogue has mustaches
that fills everyone with admiration.

Muchos “personajes” excéntricos existieron en La Habana quienes, como la arquitectura y la historia, formaron en algún momento parte del paisaje urbano. Hoy, solo a pocos se les recuerda, tal es el caso de aquel que llamaban Bigote e’Gato.
Manuel “Bigote e’Gato” Pérez Rodríguez, era un ‘aplatanado en Cuba” español que poseía un bar alla por el viejo barrio de Luyano, pero que llamaba la atención por su aspecto estrafalario y por los largos bigotes que tenía, los cuales se complacía en retorcer en sus extremos con la punta de sus dedos hasta mantenerlos volteados hacia arriba, como si fueran manubrios de bicicleta.
Amigo del Caballero de Paris y de otros personajes como la Marquesa, Juan Charrasqueao, el Andarín Carvajal, que los habaneros también recuerdan, llegó a La Habana Manuel Pérez Rodríguez, muy joven y procedente de Asturias. Bigote E´Gato contaba que a Cuba lo trajo ‘Cristóbal Colón’, claro está, el buque llamado así, caracterizando sus propias bromas. Desde que llegó trajo consigo el carné del Centro Asturiano en su bolsillo, decisión que entonces le abriría el camino.

Historia de Bigote E’ Gato.
CONOZCA A CUBA PRIMERO..
Abrió su bar tertulia exactamente el día 1 de marzo de 1947 en la calle Teniente Rey 308 entre Aguacate y Compostela, en La Habana Vieja y cuya propaganda decía: “Conozca a Cuba primero, visite a Bigote E´Gato después”. También fue inventor de exclusivos cocteles y raros tragos tropicales: “Atila frente a Roma”,” Espérame en el Cielo” y “Cuba en Llamas”, y por supuesto, el llamado “Bigote´e Gato”.
Trabajó en una fonda por 20 centavos diarios, más tarde en el Bar Hatuey de Concha y Cristina. Pudo abrir su bar gracias a sus ahorros y algún dinero prestado. Dicen que la boina que usaba fue la misma que trajo de Asturias. Siempre ayudó a los que tenían menos que él y entre los anuncios de su negocio estaba aquel que por mucho tiempo lo identificó como su lema: “Un pedacito de nuestra madre patria con todos sus productos, una palmera cubana con todas sus costumbres”.
Bigote E´Gato llegó a ser el presidente del Club de los Noctámbulos, cuyo único requisito para ingresar en él era tener entre 18 y 100 años de edad, estar en el bar entre las 12 de la noche y las 6 de la mañana. y por supuesto, contar con la alegría y disposición para esa asociación. En este club, a las 3 de la madrugada, se ofrecía una comida criolla: rabo encendido, lengua estofada y dulce de fruta bomba con queso.
En 1958 presidió el ‘Tribunal de los Locos’, un programa humorístico de la televisión, lo que le hizo ganar mas clientes. Fue campeón de una carrera de fotingos con su Chevrolet de 1926, que anunciaba profusamente a su bar y con el que también se paseaba los domingos por el Malecón acompañado de hermosas mujeres sobre todo mulatas, por las que sentía especial predilección.
Bigote e’ Gato siempre se distinguio por su bigote y pelo largo y la roja y redonda boina sobre su cabeza, destacándose siempre por su buen humor, una contagiosa carcajada y su gentileza. Una prueba de su agudeza es su frase: “En cuestiones del amor son los hombres los que pasan más trabajo, porque no es lo mismo abrir un libro que sacarle la punta a un lápiz.”
“Bigote e’ Gato” o sea Manuel Pérez, murió el 11 de julio de 2003 en la Habana.

Daniel Santos Canta “Bigote e’ Gato”.
Como otros personajes populares cubanos, Bigote e’Gato fue motivo de inspiración de dos canciones muy populares, compuestas por Jesús Guerra y fueron las guarachas “El disgusto de Bigote” y “Bigote Gato es un gran sujeto”, esta última interpretada por la Sonora Matancera con su cantante Daniel Santos y que decía:
Bigote e’gato es un gran sujeto
que vive allá por el Luyanó
y tiene el pícaro unos bigotes
que llena a todos de admiración.
