Siempre moderno, el Jazz es libertad de expresión, alas para el alma, materialización de sueños; eso es el jazz.

Y es que rompe barreras y crea oportunidades para la comprensión mutua y la tolerancia, es un símbolo de unidad y paz, reduce tensiones, fomenta la igualdad de género, refuerza el papel de la juventud en el cambio social, promueve la innovación artística, la improvisación, nuevas formas de expresión y estimula el diálogo inteligente.

Bien dijo el escritor japonés Haruki Murakami: “Puede haber cierta magia cuando escribo, pero el resto del día soy nada más que un amante del jazz como hay millones por ahí”. Y de seguro los hay, en Cuba no faltan.

Un gran número de jazzistas de varias generaciones en nuestro país enriquecen el raudal musical nacional y se hacen cada día de un mayor número de seguidores.

Hablo de los ya consagrados Chucho Valdés, Germán Velasco y el maestro Emilio Morales, y también de otros más jóvenes como Roberto Fonseca, Orlando Sánchez, Rolando Luna, Harold López-Nussa, Alejandro Falcón, José Luis Pacheco, Miguel Ángel de Armas y Eduardo Barruetabeña, muchos de ellos surgidos de los festivales JoJazz.

Se cree que este género llegó a Santiago de Cuba junto con las tropas de Estados Unidos desembarcadas allí en 1898, en ocasión de la Guerra Hispano-Cubano-Norteamericana. Cierta o no esta afirmación, hay una realidad: El jazz llegó para quedarse.

Muestra de ello es el surgimiento de nuevos espacios para su promoción. Además de un notable incremento de producciones discografías, las cuales se dejan ver en las nominaciones en la “Categoría Jazz” que hoy complementan y enriquecen las opciones de los Cubadisco Festival, la feria internacional más importante de la industria discográfica de la música cubana.

Su calidad habla por ellas y podemos mencionar los discos Chucho Valdés presenta a Carlos Miyares; El trombón de Santa Amalia, de Juan Carlos Marín; Claroscuro, de Alejandro Falcón; Yo, de Roberto Fonseca y Poliscandú, de Ruy López-Nussa, entre muchos otros de igual valía.

Hay para escoger- dicho en buen cubano-, y es motivo de orgullo y satisfacción el contar con ello. Nuestro jazz es el reflejo de nuestra gente, es tan variado, lleno de matices, mezclas, colores, sabores como lo es toda Cuba.
