Sale José Martí de La Habana rumbo a México como pasajero en el vapor ‘City of Havana’, el 24 de febrero de 1877 y después de una azarosa travesía por pueblos mexicanos, llega en los primeros días de abril a la capital de Guatemala, donde se aloja, de forma provisional en la casa del cubano José María Izaguirre, quién era Director de la Escuela Normal.

Izaguirre solo conoce a Martí por referencias, no obstante lo incluye en el claustro de profesores de la Escuela Normal como profesor de Literatura, e interinamente en el de Ejercicios de Composición. Entre las alumnas se encuentra María García Granados.

Martí participa activamente en las veladas artísticas y literarias que organiza Izaguirre, y en la del 21 de abril celebrada en la Escuela Normal, pronuncia un discurso de saludo a Guatemala. Se dice que ese día conoció a María, la hermosa joven guatemalteca, quien quedó impresionada por la delicadeza y sensibilidad del culto cubano.

En un momento dado el padre de María, llamando Miguel García Granados y quien había sido presidente de la República, conoce a Martí y se hacen amigos. Ambos disfrutaban del ajedrez, por lo que se hace frecuente la visita de nuestro Apóstol a la casa de María.

El 29 de mayo Martí es nombrado catedrático de Literatura Francesa, Inglesa, Italiana y Alemana. También de Historia de la Filosofía en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Guatemala.

Conforme pasó el tiempo, María y José llegaron a enamorarse y consecuentemente se desarrolló una gran pasión entre los dos. Para la desafortunada pupila, el maestro literario ya estaba comprometido con Carmen Zayas Bazán.

Todo marchaba bien para él en Guatemala pero, como hombre de honor, no podía eludir ni tampoco terminar su compromiso con la joven camagüeyana Carmen Zayas Bazán Hidalgo, quien lo esperaba en México para casarse, como así ocurrió el 20 de diciembre de 1877.

Mientras tanto María, la guatemalteca, lejos de apagarla mantenía encendida su pasión por Martí.

José retornó a México donde contrajo matrimonio con Carmen. Esto afectó mucho a la joven María y su tristeza fue evidente. María reflejaba un estado de salud deteriorante, el cual combinado con su tristeza, causo su muerte.

A principios del mes de enero de 1878 Martí regresa a Guatemala, esta vez en compañía de su esposa Carmen Zayas Bazán. Pasa el tiempo, y no visita más la residencia del padre de María.

Entonces María le envía esta nota:
“Hace días que llegaste a Guatemala, y no has venido a verme. ¿Por qué eludes tu visita? Yo no tengo resentimiento contigo, porque tú siempre me hablaste con sinceridad respecto a tu situación moral de compromiso de matrimonio con la señorita Zayas Bazán/ Te suplico que vengas pronto”.

Pero Martí no volvió y ella falleció el 10 de mayo de 1878.

Este desafortunado acontecimiento causó gran tristeza a José Martí. Desde esa tristeza profunda se gestó la inspiración del siguiente poema:

A LA NIÑA DE GUATEMALA, LA QUE SE MURIÓ DE AMOR.

Quiero, a la sombra de un ala, Contar este cuento en flor: La niña de Guatemala, La que se murió de amor.
Eran de lirios los ramos, Y las orlas de reseda Y de jazmín: la enterramos En una caja de seda.

… Ella dio al desmemoriado Una almohadilla de olor: El volvió, volvió casado: Ella se murió de amor.
Iban cargándola en andas Obispos y embajadores: Detrás iba el pueblo en tandas, Todo cargado de flores.

… Ella, por volverlo a ver, Salió a verlo al mirador: El volvió con su mujer: Ella se murió de amor.
Como de bronce candente Al beso de despedida Era su frente ¡la frente Que más he amado en mi vida!

… Se entró de tarde en el río, La sacó muerta el doctor: Dicen que murió de frío: Yo sé que murió de amor.
Allí, en la bóveda helada, La pusieron en dos bancos: Besé su mano afilada, Besé sus zapatos blancos.

Callado, al oscurecer, Me llamó el enterrador: ¡Nunca más he vuelto a ver A la que murió de amor!

JOSÉ MARTÍ AND THE GIRL OF GUATEMALA. THE TRUE STORY.

Jose Marti left Havana for Mexico as a passenger on the steamer ‘City of Havana’, on February 24, 1877, and after a hazardous journey through Mexican towns, he arrived in the first days of April in the capital of Guatemala, where he is temporarily staying in the house of Cuban José María Izaguirre, who was the Director of the Escuela Normal.

Izaguirre only knows Martí by references, however, he includes him in the faculty of the Normal School as a professor of Literature, and temporarily in that of Composition Exercises. Among the students is María García Granados.

Martí actively participates in the artistic and literary evenings organized by Izaguirre, and in the one on April 21 held at the Escuela Normal, he delivers a greeting speech to Guatemala. It is said that that day he met María, the beautiful Guatemalan girl, who was impressed by the delicacy and sensitivity of the Cuban cult.

At one point, María’s father, calling Miguel García Granados and who had been President of the Republic, meets Martí and becomes friends. Both enjoyed chess, which is why our Apostle’s visit to Mary’s house is frequent.

On May 29 Martí is appointed professor of French, English, Italian, and German Literature. Also of History of Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Guatemala.

As time passed, María and José fell in love, and consequently, a great passion developed between the two. For the unfortunate pupil, the literary teacher was already engaged to Carmen Zayas Bazán.

Everything was going well for him in Guatemala but, as a man of honor, he could not avoid or end his commitment to the young Camagüeyan woman Carmen Zayas Bazán Hidalgo, who was waiting for him in Mexico to marry, as was the case on December 20, 1877.

Meanwhile, Maria, the Guatemalan, far from turning it off kept her passion for Martí burning.

José returned to Mexico where he married Carmen. This greatly affected young Maria and her sadness was evident. Maria reflected a deteriorating state of health, which combined with her sadness, caused her death.

At the beginning of January 1878, Martí returned to Guatemala, this time in the company of his wife Carmen Zayas Bazán. Time passes, and he no longer visits the residence of Maria’s father.

Then Maria sends him this note:
“You arrived in Guatemala days ago, and you have not come to see me. Why do you avoid your visit? I do not have resentment with you, because you always spoke to me sincerely regarding your moral situation of marriage commitment with Miss Zayas Bazán / I beg you to come soon. ”

But Martí did not return and she died on May 10, 1878.

This unfortunate event caused great sadness to José Martí. From that deep sadness the inspiration of the following poem was born:

THE GIRL OF GUATEMALA, THE ONE WHO DIED OF LOVE.

I want, in the shadow of a wing, to tell this story in bloom: The girl from Guatemala, The one who died of love.
The bouquets were of lilies, And the borders of reseda And of jasmine: we buried her In a silk box.

… She gave the forgetful One a scent pad: He returned, he returned married: She died of love.
Bishops and ambassadors were carrying it in litters: Behind the people went in batches, all laden with flowers.

… She, to see him again, went out to see him at the viewpoint: He returned to his wife: She died of love.
Like red hot bronze At the farewell kiss It was his forehead, the forehead that I have loved the most in my life!

… She entered the river late in the afternoon, the doctor took her dead: They say she died of cold: I know she died of love.
There, in the frozen vault, They put her on two benches: I kissed her sharp hand, I kissed her white shoes.

Silent, at dusk, the gravedigger called me: I have never seen the one who died of love again!
