En el interés de la divulgación completa, nuestra familia perdió una casa que estaba en construcción. La casa nunca fue construida, pero habíamos elegido la ubicación. Todavía recuerdo a mi tío, un arquitecto, hablando con mi madre sobre la ubicación de las ventanas. Le estaba aconsejando que aprovechara la brisa que siempre fluía en Cuba.

Mis padres no tienen interés en reclamar el suelo. Estaban felices de que los tres creciéramos en libertad.

Muchos de mis amigos perdieron sus propiedades y no obtuvieron ninguna compensación por ellos.

Conozco a una mujer cubana cuyo rancho familiar fue confiscado por soldados que se presentaron y arrojaron a la familia desde el lugar a punta de pistola. Lamentablemente, el rancho había estado en la familia durante un siglo y había criado ganado para el consumo doméstico de carne. Mi conjetura es que las vacas están muertas y el lugar es otra parte improductiva de la tierra cubana.

Me da placer, y un sentido de justicia, que algunas personas acudan a los tribunales para desafiar al régimen comunista. He hablado con algunos de ellos, y todos lo están haciendo por sus padres, que trabajaron muy duro para construir esos negocios. Es como la justicia para “mami y papi”, y lo entiendo perfectamente.

Han transcurrido casi 60 años desde que comenzaron las confiscaciones, pero los daños son fácilmente identificables para decenas de miles de exiliados cubanos y sus descendientes.

El régimen de Castro también llevó a cabo el robo masivo de manera descaradamente pública, por lo que no hay disputa sobre su ocurrencia y la cantidad de propiedad afectada.

A corto plazo, se hizo la confiscación para explotar la tontería de que todos los dueños de propiedades eran parte de la CIA. A la larga, fue otro fracaso comunista porque las fábricas y los ranchos no tenían a nadie para dirigirlos.

Así que deja que la justicia suceda. Personalmente no me importa el dinero de los comunistas. Solo quiero que reconozcan la injusticia de robar propiedad y acusar a nuestros padres de algo que no fueron.

Como dijo una vez mi difunto padre, “creamos empleos e hicimos próspera a Cuba. ¿Qué hicieron los comunistas?” No crearon empleos reales ni hicieron próspera la isla.

(OPINION) TIME FOR CUBA’S COMMUNISTS TO PAY OUR PARENTS BACK.

In the interest of full disclosure, our family lost a home that was under construction. The house was never built, but we had chosen the location. I still remember my uncle, an architect, talking to my mother about the location of the windows. He was advising her to take advantage of the breeze that always flowed in Cuba.

My parents have no interest in claiming the ground. They were just happy that the three of us got to grow up in freedom.

Many of my friends did lose their properties and got no compensation for them.

I know a Cuban woman whose family ranch was confiscated by soldiers who showed up and threw the family from the grounds at gunpoint. Sadly, the ranch had been in the family for a century and raised cattle for domestic beef consumption. My guess is that the cows are dead and the place is another unproductive piece of Cuban land.

It gives me pleasure, and a sense of justice, that some people are going to court to challenge the communist regime. I’ve talked to some of them, and they’re all doing it for their parents, who worked so hard to build those businesses. It’s like justice for “mami y papi,” and I understand that fully.

Nearly 60 years have passed since the confiscations began, but the damages are easily identifiable for tens of thousands of Cuban exiles and their descendants.

The Castro regime also carried out the mass theft in a brazenly public manner, so there is no dispute over its occurrence and the amount of property affected.

In the short run, the confiscation was done to exploit the nonsense that all of the property-owners were part of the CIA. In the long run, it was another communist failure because the factories and ranches had no one to run them.

So let justice happen. I don’t personally care for any money from the communists. I just want them to recognize the injustice of stealing property and accusing our parents of something they were not.

As my late father once said, “we create jobs and made Cuba prosperous. What did the communists do?” They didn’t create real jobs or make the island prosperous.
