A batch of seven locomotives and the first experimental prototype of ferrobús (ultra-light train) arrived in Havana on Thursday from Russia as part of a contract with the Eurasian country to modernize Cuba’s rail sector.

With the arrival of these transport equipment, 43 locomotives of a total of 75 manufactured by the Russian company Sinara have already been added, and it is expected that they will gradually arrive in Cuba until the year 2021 with the aim of allocating them to rail freight.

In the case of ferrobuses, they were designed by Russia with the technique developed by the Union of Ferrocarriles de Cuba (UFC), according to a report published on the official website of Cubadebate.

At the end of 2018, as part of the UFC program to boost the rail sector, a lot arrived with 35 cement transport equipment. Cuba and Russia agreed in December 2016 a roadmap to develop a railway infrastructure project in order to improve road capacity and revive the depressed rail system of the Caribbean country.

The agreement also includes technical assistance to Cuban specialists, the delivery of spare parts for the maintenance of the equipment and the modernization of a locomotive workshop based in the Cuban capital.

During the visit made by the Cuban leader Miguel Diaz-Canel to Russia last November, his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, offered the island “aid for the construction of transport infrastructure” and revealed that both had addressed the renewal of the railway network of the Caribbean country.

In the execution of a modernization project of the railways of Cuba with the collaboration of Russia will invest about 1,000 million euros (equivalent to about 1,054 million dollars) until the year 2030, according to island media in 2017.

Artur Tukhikian, technical director of the railway project developed by the Russian company STM in Cuba, explained to Sputnik that 45 locomotives are already on the island, 37 of them in operation. Tukhikian said that the purchase of the locomotives is done through of the company Sinara, and that the Russian Railways Union participates in the recovery of the railway networks and their main lines, including communications networks.

The SMT company will supply Cuba with 75 locomotives in the period 2017-2021, in addition to securing parts and equipment to repair and maintain the railway park that are operating on the island.

Un lote de siete locomotoras y el primer prototipo experimental de ferrobús (tren ultraligero) llegó el jueves al puerto de La Habana procedente de Rusia como parte de un contrato con el país euroasiático para modernizar el sector del ferrocarril de Cuba.

Con el arribo de estos equipos de transporte suman ya 43 las locomotoras de un total de 75 fabricadas por la empresa rusa Sinara, que está previsto que lleguen gradualmente a Cuba hasta el año 2021 con el objetivo de destinarlas al transporte de carga por ferrocarril.

En el caso de los ferrobuses, fueron diseñados por Rusia con la técnica desarrollada por la Unión de Ferrocarriles de Cuba (UFC), según indica un reporte publicado en la página web oficial Cubadebate.

Al cierre de 2018, como parte del programa de la UFC para el impulso al sector ferroviario, llegó un lote con 35 equipos para el transporte de cemento. Cuba y Rusia acordaron en diciembre de 2016 una hoja de ruta para desarrollar un proyecto de infraestructura ferroviaria con el fin de mejorar la capacidad vial y reanimar el deprimido sistema ferroviario del país caribeño.

El convenio incluye además asistencia técnica a especialistas cubanos, la entrega de piezas de repuesto para el mantenimiento de los equipos y la modernización de un taller de locomotoras con sede en la capital cubana.

Durante la visita que realizó el gobernante cubano Miguel Díaz-Canel a Rusia en noviembre pasado, su homólogo ruso, Vladímir Putin, ofreció a la isla “ayuda para la construcción de la infraestructura de transporte” y reveló que ambos habían abordado la renovación de la red ferroviaria del país caribeño.

En la ejecución de un proyecto de modernización de las vías férreas de Cuba con la colaboración de Rusia se invertirán unos 1,000 millones de euros (equivalentes a unos 1,054 millones de dólares) hasta el año 2030, según informaron medios de la isla en 2017.

Artur Tukhikian, director técnico del proyecto ferroviario que desarrolla en Cuba la empresa rusa STM, explicó a Sputnik que hasta el momento ya están en la isla 45 locomotoras, de ellas 37 en funcionamiento.Tukhikian precisó que la compra de las locomotoras se hace a través de la empresa Sinara, y que la Unión de Ferrocarriles de Rusia participa en la recuperación de las redes ferroviarias y sus líneas principales, incluidas las redes de comunicaciones.

La compañía SMT suministrará a Cuba 75 locomotoras en el período 2017-2021, además de asegurar piezas y equipos para reparar y mantener el parque ferroviario que están en funcionamiento en la isla.
