The Guayabita del Pinar is produced with the alcohol obtained from a small guava that is harvested wild at the edge of the pine trees of the Pinar del Río mountains. These guayabitas were sold by the farmers of those areas in small catauros. All the bottles contain at least one of these guavas in its interior and there are two versions of the Guayabita del Pinar: one is dry like rum and the other is sweet as a liqueur.

This traditional Cuban drink has served as inspiration for many artists. The famous musician, singer and director of the Cuban orchestra Original de Manzanillo, Cándido Fabré, composed a son called “Guayabita del Pinar”, which was a success in the 90s on the island. Also, the Cuban singer Willy Chirino, based in Miami, included it in his repertoire and recorded it on his album “Asere”.

The Guayabita del Pinar has become a famous Cuban liquor that has received international awards for its exquisiteness and good taste. This remarkable drink began to be manufactured – according to Volume 4, Folio 165 of the Mercantile Registry – by the firm Garay y Compañía, which was integrated by Lucio Garay Zavala, Salvador Baduel Carrera and Juan Bautista Aguirre. These characters in turn made gas in Maceo street number 68, between the streets Vélez Caviedes and Recreo, precisely where there was a colonial house owned by Dr. Corujedo.

On March 3, 1926, Garay registered the “La Primitiva” soft drink factory in the Mercantile Registry and in March 26 of the same year registered in the Register itself – Volume 22, Sheet 12 – the factory of “Occidental” liquors. Both businesses were located in calle Recreo number 43 between Sol and Virtudes. These lands had been acquired up to calle Recreo with a bottom to Calle Colón, a place where the transport for the collection of liquors and soft drinks for their subsequent transfer and distribution in the markets.

The price of the guayabita was 80 cents and five cents the soft drinks. Later, the “La Primitiva” soft drink stopped being manufactured to dedicate Garay Zavala exclusively to the famous “Guayabita del Pinar”, known internationally for its quality and for the aging it received in its cellars.

La Guayabita del Pinar es producida con el alcohol que se obtiene de una pequeña guayaba que se cosecha de forma silvestre a la orilla de los pinos de las montañas de Pinar del Río. Estas guayabitas eran vendidas por los campesinos de esas zonas en pequeños catauros. Todas las botellas contienen al menos una de estas guayabas en su interior y existen dos versiones de la Guayabita del Pinar: una es seca como el ron y la otra es dulce como un licor.

Esta tradicional bebida cubana ha servido de inspiración para muchos artistas. El afamado músico, cantante y director de la orquesta cubana Original de Manzanillo, Cándido Fabré, compuso un son llamado “Guayabita del Pinar”, el cual fue todo un éxito en los años 90 en la isla. Así también, el cantante cubano Willy Chirino, radicado en Miami, la incluyó en su repertorio y la grabó en su disco “Asere”.

LA GUAYABITA DEL PINAR. SUS COMIENZOS.

La Guayabita del Pinar se ha convertido en un famoso licor cubano que ha recibido premios internacionales por su exquisitez y su buen gusto. Esta notable bebida se comenzó a fabricar – según el tomo número 4, Folio 165 del Registro Mercantil – por la firma Garay y Compañía, la cual estaba integrada por Lucio Garay Zavala, Salvador Baduel Carrera y Juan Bautista Aguirre. Estos personajes fabricaban a su vez gaseosa en la calle Maceo número 68, entre las calles Vélez Caviedes y Recreo, precisamente donde existía una casa colonial propiedad del doctor Corujedo.

El día 3 de marzo de 1926 Garay inscribe en el Registro Mercantil – en el tomo 22 – la fábrica de gaseosa “La Primitiva” y el 26 de marzo del propio año asienta en el propio Registro – Tomo 22, Folio 12 – la fábrica de licores “La Occidental”. Ambos negocios se ubicaron en la calle Recreo número 43 entre Sol y Virtudes. Estos terrenos habían sido adquiridos hasta la calle Recreo con fondo a la calle Colón, lugar por donde entraba el transporte para la recogida de licores y gaseosas para su posterior traslado y distribución en los mercados.

El precio de la guayabita era de 80 centavos y cinco centavos los refrescos. Posteriormente la gaseosa “La Primitiva” dejó de fabricarse para dedicarse Garay Zavala exclusivamente a la famosa “Guayabita del Pinar”, conocida internacionalmente por su calidad y por el añejamiento que recibía en sus bodegas.
