Willy Chirino, nacido el 5 de abril de 1947 en Consolación del Sur, Pinar del Río, es un músico y compositor cubanoamericano. Conocido en todo el mundo por su estilo del “Miami Sound”. Siendo él uno de sus principales “arquitectos”.
Mientras crecía en el pequeño pueblo de Consolación del Sur, Cuba, Chirino era un músico improbable. Hijo de un médico y un farmacéutico que no eran músicos, Chirino quedó fascinado por las bandas que actuaron en una de las fiestas religiosas de la ciudad y decidió convertirse en músico.
En 1961, dos años después de la revolución cubana que vio a Fidel Castro derrocar a Fulgencio Batista, los padres de Chirino enviaron a Chirino, de 14 años, a Miami como uno de los más de 14,000 niños que dejaron Cuba en el exilio entre 1960-1962 como parte de la Operación Peter. Pan (también conocido como Operación Pedro Pan). Willy Chirino, born April 5, 1947 in Consolación del Sur, Pinar del Río, is a Cuban-American musician and and one of the architects of the “Miami Sound” Fused Salsa that is known worldwide.
Growing up in the small town of Consolación del Sur, Cuba, Chirino was an unlikely musician. The son of a doctor and a pharmacist who were not musical, Chirino became entranced by the bands that performed at one of the town’s religious parties and decided to become a musician.
In 1961, two years after the Cuban Revolution that saw Fidel Castro overthrow Fulgencio Batista, Chirino’s parents sent the 14-year-old Chirino to Miami as one of more than 14,000 children who left Cuba in exile between 1960-1962 as part of Operation Peter Pan (aka Operación Pedro Pan). Organized by the U.S. government and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami, the operation was organized to transport the children of Cuban parents who opposed Castro’s government to the United States.
In Miami, where The Beatles had performed on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, Chirino dreamed of becoming a member of the Fab Four and pursued a music career. He became an integral part of the city’s salsa scene, first as a bass player and multi-instrumentalist, then later as a vocalist and composer.
In 1974 he released his first album, One Man Alone. He has since released more than 25 albums, including Son del Alma in 2006, which won a Grammy for Best Salsa/Merengue Album. Among his catalog of more than 100 songs is Soy, which has been recorded by more than 60 artists.

Most recently, Chirino and his wife, singer/song writer Lissette Álvarez, released their first album together, Amarraditos (Bound to One Another). The CD includes a potpourri of classic Spanish-language love songs. Chirino’s album, “Pa’lante”, was released at spring 2008, after which he launched a world tour.
In 2011, when asked of how his recordings of My Beatles Heart, he said that Sony scrutinized every single one of his songs and their versions because they consider the songs by The Beatles as one of their most precious treasures, and wanted to make sure they were being used in a rightful manner.
In 2014, Chirino received a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in Las Vegas for his music career.
Personal life
His first marriage was to Olga Maria Rodriguez and bore three daughters: Angie, Olga Maria and Jessica. He later married Lissette Álvarez and had three more children: Nicolle, Alana, and Gianfranco. He has three grandchildren, Elis Regina, Andres and Dashiel. He and his wife support the Cuban dissident movement, Yo No Coopero Con La Dictadura (I Don’t Cooperate with the Dictatorship).
