The study was published by Palms, a scientific journal of the International Palm Society of the United States, which publishes relevant global results specifically related to the botanical family of palms.

Specialists from the botanical gardens of Cupaynicú, Granma, and Sancti Spíritus, described and validated the species, located near San Felipe, a town located in a border area between the municipality of Jatibonico and Florencia, in Ciego de Ávila. The Palma Azul is also known as “Coccothrinax espirituana”).

According to ACN Celio Moya López, one of the botanists who made the discovery, the plant is only found in the colossal zone with substrates of serpentine rock, where thorny thickets commonly known as cuabales predominate.

The specialist also said that the plant grows wild in both Cuban locations (the Espirituana and the Avileña); and that its scientific name is Coccothrinax spirituana, in reference to the province of Sancti Spíritus.

The popular denomination refers to the striking blue ash color of its leaves, one of the most visible differences of this palm with respect to others, he explained.

He also noted that in the case of the “blue”, this is a small palm of three to five meters, unarmed, solitary, with an erect stem of 12 to 15 centimeters in diameter, normally covered with a fibrous network of the pods of the leaves.

Julio Pavel García Lahera, another of the specialists who intervened in the study, said that he has threatened extinction and although his population is large, his occupation area is very small, about 25 square kilometers.

The Master in Botany pointed out that the species is under pressure due to the loss and degradation of its habitat, besides that the area is being reforested with exotic species.

El estudio fue publicado por Palms, revista científica de la International Palm Society de Estados Unidos, la cual da a conocer resultados relevantes mundiales referidos específicamente a la familia botánica de las palmas.

Especialistas de los jardines botánicos de Cupaynicú, de Granma, y de Sancti Spíritus, describieron y validaron la especie, localizada cerca de San Felipe, poblado ubicado en una zona limítrofe entre el municipio espirituano de Jatibonico y Florencia, en Ciego de Ávila.

Según informó a la ACN Celio Moya López, uno de los botánicos autores del descubrimiento, la planta se presenta únicamente en la zona colinosa con sustratos de roca serpentina, lugar donde predominan matorrales espinosos denominados comúnmente cuabales.

El especialista dijo además que la planta crece silvestre en ambas localidades cubanas (la espirituana y la avileña); y que su nombre científico es Coccothrinax spirituana, en alusión a la provincia de Sancti Spíritus. La Palma Azul Cubana es tambien conocida como “Coccothrinax espirituana”).

La denominación popular hace referencia al llamativo color ceniciento azuloso que tienen sus hojas, una de las diferencias más visibles de esta palma con respecto a otras, detalló.

Asimismo, señaló que en el caso de la “azul”, ésta es una palma pequeña de tres a cinco metros, inerme, solitaria, de tallo erecto de 12 a 15 centímetros de diámetro, normalmente cubierto con una red fibrosa de las vainas de las hojas.

Julio Pavel García Lahera, otro de los especialistas que intervinieron en el estudio, comentó que posee amenaza de extinción y pese a que su población es numerosa, su área de ocupación es muy pequeña, de unos 25 kilómetros cuadrados.

El Máster en Botánica puntualizó que la especie se encuentra presionada por la pérdida y degradación de su hábitat, además de que la zona está siendo reforestada con especies exóticas.
