CUBAN GOVERNMENT REJECTS EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT CLAUSE OF HUMAN RIGHTS ON THE ISLAND.
Cuban lawmakers and government officials rejected on Thursday the EU Parliament’s “interventionist” stance on human rights while also celebrating the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement approved by the EU on Wednesday.
Elio Rodriguez, head of European and Canadian relations at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called the adoption of the agreement “positive.”
Rodriguez also said Cuba would seek to expand relations with the EU in areas of common interest.
On Wednesday, when the deal was passed, EU lawmaker Elena Valenciano said that “Europe has a great opportunity to demonstrate to the United States…that it is possible to maintain the highest level of expectations on Cuba.”
However, the Cuban foreign ministry official slammed the EU for its “unnecessary and interfering…resolution on human rights to ensure that the new bilateral relations will improve the lives of Cubans.”
The clause warns that the cooperation agreement will be suspended in case Cuba violates its human rights provisions.
Rodriguez dismissed this as being “harmful to the principles of respect, equality and reciprocity contained in the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement.”
According with International HRO and particularly Amnesty International, in Cuba, despite purported political openness, restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression, association and movement continued. Local civil society and opposition groups reported increased politically motivated detentions and harassment of government critics.

EL GOBIERNO CUBANO RECHAZA CLÁUSULA DEL PARLAMENTO EUROPEO SOBRE DERECHOS HUMANOS EN LA ISLA.
Los legisladores cubanos y funcionarios gubernamentales rechazaron el jueves la postura “intervencionista” del Parlamento de la UE sobre los derechos humanos y celebraron el miércoles el Acuerdo de Diálogo Político y Cooperación aprobado por la UE.
Elio Rodríguez, jefe de relaciones europeas y canadienses en el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Cuba, calificó la aprobación del acuerdo como “positiva”.
Rodríguez también dijo que Cuba buscará ampliar las relaciones con la UE en áreas de interés común.
El miércoles, cuando se aprobó el acuerdo, la legisladora de la UE, Elena Valenciano, dijo que “Europa tiene una gran oportunidad de demostrar a Estados Unidos … que es posible mantener el más alto nivel de expectativas sobre Cuba”.
Sin embargo, el funcionario del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Cuba criticó a la UE por su “innecesaria e interferente … resolución sobre derechos humanos para asegurar que las nuevas relaciones bilaterales mejoren la vida de los cubanos”.
La cláusula advierte que el acuerdo de cooperación será suspendido en caso de que Cuba viole sus disposiciones de derechos humanos.
Rodríguez descartó esto como “perjudicial para los principios de respeto, igualdad y reciprocidad contenidos en el Acuerdo de Diálogo Político y Cooperación”.
De acuerdo con International HRO y particularmente Amnistía Internacional, en Cuba, a pesar de la supuesta apertura política, continuaron las restricciones a los derechos a la libertad de expresión, asociación y movimiento. La sociedad civil local y los grupos de oposición informaron de un aumento de las detenciones motivadas políticamente y el hostigamiento de los críticos del gobierno.
